XPO | Self driving

You just knew that one of these computer driven vehicles was going to go haywire and kill somebody some day: Didn't you?. Well now it's happened and a reality. Now project out into the future w/ computer driven tractor trailers going haywire and causing a massive and deadly interstate pileup. It's surely an accident just waiting to happen.

The plantiffs attorneys will have a field day...ain't never gonna happen,,,a more important reality is for trucking companies to import drivers from Central and South America....si habla espano?

Crashes will happen. Deaths will happen. The tech will continue to improve.

Self driving vehicles and trucks will be, if they aren't already, safer than human driven vehicles.

It's the future.

They aren't safer yet. Humans have a much better driving record if you combine ALL of the drivers. There's only 1.18 deaths per 100,000,000 vehicle miles driven from human drivers. Autonomous cars already have one death (possibly two if you count the Tesla driver that got killed) and how many miles? The technology will get better in time, but right now they are not safer using the data available.

Another thing to consider is imagine a self-driving truck plowing into a family car and killing all of its occupants. If a human driver is involved he is held responsible and possibly charged and arrested. If a computer controlled car is involved all trucks using the same software will be taken off the road until it's figured out what the malfunction was. Imagine having a fleet of self driving trucks that have to be shut down ( can't make money sitting idle) , while an investigation is ongoing.

That Tesla crash was then first death in autonomous cars. They had driven 130,000,000 miles at that point according to the source I found. This is the second fatality. I did not find a similar stat saying how many miles autonomous cars have driven since the Tesla.

You may be right that they aren't safer yet, but they will be and it will be soon.

Will a Tesla car hit my truck at 40 mph if I am turning across the road anywhere other than a crosswalk? Bigger question, will manslaughter lawsuits bankrupt Tesla before they get the tech “right”?

Um, you might want to recheck your source or at least, your commas. 130 million miles is nearly 1 and 1/2 times the distance from the Earth to the Sun. How long have Tesla's been around? Let's be real generous and say 50yrs. For this Tesla testing to have occurred, one Tesla autonomous vehicle would have to have been driven continuosly at an average speed a little north of 296 MPH. Someone check my math. 50x365=18,250. 18250x24=438,000 130,000,000/438,000=296.8

At the rate that Tesla is burning cash, they won't neen any lawsuits to go bankrupt. The car that was supposed to save them, the model 3, is way behind their production goals, which is probably a blessing in disguise since they lose money on them. Also they just barely stsrted testing the semi trucks. The semi which needs to have a huge amount of batteries costs the same as their SUV? But Musk will announce some new product to distract his investors before the semi is launched anyways.

One car, that's the problem with your math. Take all the automobiles on earth, how far they've driven, then figure out how fast one would have to drive for 50 years. It's an absurd premise on its face.

Tesla has tens of thousands of cars rolling around. Wikipedia says they've solder over 250,000 and manufactured their 300,000 car (likely sold by now)

This article says they have driven 300 million miles in autonomous mode.
