ODFL | People vs. Freight

Ok/so how many years have you been trucking?

I’ll keep it simple for you son and just leave it at over 25 years with OD.

This ain’t no peter pulling contest boy, go take your paranoia elsewhere and quit spreading false rumors. Company been over hiring for years and believes heavily in what this current administration is doing will cause a booming freight market.
OD didn’t make it to the top by not preplanning. Go on enjoy the slow time, half your city brothers will be fired, quit or injured by the end of summer and you’ll be working too many hours to dream up the next thing to happen to this place.

Lhdrvr, it just makes sense. An acquisition that is...let’s get staffed up so when it does take place, we will have the people in place to take care of the added business. People will move on, (quit) during the process, so it’s good to have plenty on tap to meet the demands of the added work.
You asked the question, so now I will ask the question. How long you been driving Chip? How many years with OD, Chip? Where y’all getting your information about acquisition. Hey Chip, give us the facts. Sources. If I spread every road rumor on here, I wouldn’t have time to work. Look at this Chippy, I work a schedule of my choosing, I have been asked to work over the weekend. I don’t know where y’all are at, but the PNW is busting at the seams. Y’all need to listen to experience. I will now step off the soapbox.

If no OT change then I would bet it’s just over hiring expecting freight to bust loose from somewhere like a new huge account. OD has done this many times before, trying to predict freight levels. I seriously doubt an acquisition is on the horizon.

It's too bad it doesn't matter weather it's facebook or forums or wherever people can't just talk and share. Doesn't matter weather it's speculation. We gave our opinions on what we see. We really just don't need the hostility created by another party or 2. I won't name names or engage since there are new forum rules about being directly offensive towards other parties on the forums. Just don't engage that fella, or fellas. Keep on keeping on.

New forum rules on being offensive? Oh my...have you visited the ABF forum lately? But back to the original subject...OD has been on a hiring spree for a while now. Four friends of mine (2 who are long-time friends) have got hired there within the last several months. Heck, I even explored getting on there myself several years ago. So, as far as a potential acquisition goes, if OD bought a non-union carrier they might not have to ‘re-hire’ those drivers and that might explain the hiring surge. But I have to admit I do like billylo’s reference to the ‘Friday/Monday’ call offs in the summer!

At our Terminal we’ve had the banners on the fence and building out for some time. When we acquired Priority, we only kept their best people. Course there was resentment by some and they quit. I’m not sure how many Priority people we still have. From my view it seems like we’re busy, like I said before Uline is becoming a big player. Heard a story of possibly hauling for Amazon. Could be a new National account. Who knows.

Billy Lo is correct. All the ltl companies are over hiring because they think the economy is just going to bust wide open and if it don't then oh well they will just lay you off or cut your hrs to nothing come winter time.

No matter how busy you get at this place always try to live within a 40 hr paycheck on the city board. Some years they get silly and bring on way too many hands until some quit, fired, injures or laid off. You won’t even notice the slow down as much when you living in your means jr.

Good advice, billy. Been married 30 years and we’ve lived frugally (for the most part), and have been good savers throughout. Living within ones means is a concept that’s been somewhat lost on the younger generations. I retired recently, and I’m ‘only’ 58, so it can be done. The wife loves her job and has a terrific pension that’ll be better than my Teamsters one eventually. She can retire anytime, but plans to hang on longer. Besides, she’s enjoying how clean the house is when she gets home! I don’t have the nerve to tell her I hire that work out!! Stay safe my friend, and have a good Holiday weekend!

Excellent advice from both of you. Driver’s will get the big money runs and go spend crazy. What happens sometimes is they’re not high enough on the board and loose the run, but stuck with the debt. My advice, put 10% or more into the 401k. Especially if you are younger. Save.

I'm so glad this conversation shifted to people's inability to manage on less than 60hrs a week. Been a problem with a lot of folks that I know. I'd be willing to bet the farm that OD isn't getting bought out, but the latter theory is very plausible. Guess everyone will have to wait, but don't be surprised.

I don't think this has anything to do with overtime. Most of the hiring seems to be combo or line haul. I'm with Under Pressure here I think there's a possibility of either an acquisition, merger or major customer coming. Also keep in mind the timing of Dave stepping aside as CEO. And this is not their typical every year summer hiring they began hiring last fall and never stopped. Word on the street seems to be they are at their point where they're about to stop hiring close to the Staffing levels they want. It is possible that this is just the new Norm they want to be overstaffed and ready to flex up, but something just seems different this time. If something's coming will find out 5 days after it happens. Oh and did you see all that corporate BS language in the new handbook online about insider trading and blah blah blah just corporate talk that would be keeping lips sealed around central.
The corporate "BS" language about insider trading has always been on the financial statements and the new handbook is a compilation of many different resources into one. The overtime theory is far more plausible than a buyout, but as others have said, if you've been around a long time you know we have to hire to keep up with demand and sometimes it means over hiring. Calm down everyone .

Over hiring wouldn’t normally be an indicator of a buyout unless the buyout is already in negotiations and the purchasing corporation expressed a need for more labor.

Pay attention to what happens when large corps announce layoffs, their stock price soars. More employees = more liabilities = lower company evaluation.

If OD was looking to sell it’d be a very stupid decision to add unnecessary workers as it would bring the book value of the company down instead of up.

Just my .02

Look for them to bulk up this summer, they’re gearing up big time and swinging big in my region. Every terminal being expanded, new ones opening, there’s gonna be growing pains but that’s what got us where we are now and OD has proven it’s ability to execute long term growth in the past.

I wasn’t around to watch the last expansions from the inside, but I’ve seen their growth from the outside and I’d wage that this is part of their new plan to control more of the market.

And that doesn't make you any more valuable to the company. What it does do, however, is make you more of a liability in their eyes. Your age is nothing but a liability to them. They could care less about tenure. Don't kid yourself Billy.

You gotta be kiddin, OD would not make it through the month without the all time Mastio champ.
Besides, who would cut the bossman's grass?
Ump's too busy with the goat herd and Fly spends too much time hiding his parking place from Billy.
