XPO | Safestack Is Sending Employees To The Hospital

So what issues are you finding that would put a trailer oos. If we have any issues they call a vendor and get it fixed
I don’t put any out of service for safestack issues. Like I said, I wouldn’t have any trailers to load. I’ve been using more load decks lately. Any falling bars I hold up with a strap.
I don’t think this problem (and I agree it’s a big problem) is going to go away. I wish the company would spend the $$ to fix and maintain the safestack, but I know they won’t.

Well, I’ve never seen anyone hit with a safestack beam. I’m curious if people are standing under them while dropping them? Like most, I’ve racked probably a thousand on the fac. Seen them jitterbug down when coming into the trailer with a lift, but have never had one or even come close to el-kabonging myself. Curious what the situations are.

My situation. I was breaking a trailer on the inbound. Putting up the beams with the edeck tool in my hand. Next thing I know I am back pedaling out of the trailer trying to gather myself as to what the hell just happened. I never heard anything or saw anything. And I still don't know exactly what happened. Because no one saw it. The guy that finished the trailer said nothing looked out of the ordinary. As far as grotesque damage or shifted freight or anything like that. I just got unlucky.

Let me ask you a stupid question...If there is a hole in the trailer floor do you go around it or do you drive into it and hope not to get stuck?????????? What I do is look at a broken safe stack that won't stay up ,and get off the motor and clip a strap under it!!!!!!! Jesus H Christ problem solved. LMFAO

The point is you shouldn’t HAVE TO DO THAT!!! Why make excuses for their laziness/cheapness.

I would. The only thing that’s going to get their attention is something drastic. If you let them get by with being cheap and lazy they will continue to do so.

I actually did red tag a trailer this week for safestack issues. Just too many bars missing, tracks screwed up and falling down. I talked to the FOM at the FAC I run to, my TM and will call our regional manager this week to get his take on what is being done about maintenance/repairs. What I got so far is lip service imo. We are trying to hire someone to come in and replace bars. We need each FAC to do this to make a dent in the problem. I just don’t see it happening. It’s all about the money.....

**** on them. Safety, always. I know that was Con-way’s bs but I would hold their feet to the fire. Make them admit they’re cutting corners. Don’t be party to their bullshit.

Safety always. That reminds me you used to work here lol. Safety first, when it’s convenient! I do speak my peace on issues that affect me and will keep your comments in mind when I make that phone call this week.

Money first. Then safety. The way these things come brand new they are falling apart. Literally shaking down the road will cause rails to come out the walls. Might as well stop installing the damn things to begin with, if they are so worried about money.

I confronted my TM at one time about the cost of safety. I found out safety costs around $2. Over half of our lifts had the cheap replacement horns on the side of the column because the buttons in the steering wheel were broken. I asked him about that and his response was the OEM replacement was $200 and he wasn’t paying that when he could get a horn for $2. I asked him which was more likely in an emergency, would you think to reach for the button on the side or try to hit the steering wheel like in your car. He didn’t like my rationale. So remember, safety only costs $2 at Con-way/XPO.

The lift I use doesn't work at all. I just yell beep beep all morning

Theres a difference between wanting safety and only wanting it if it does not cost them much.
Excellent example of where their “REAL” priorities are. Don’t be duped.

So I asked the “regional FAC manager/coordinator” if there were any plans to get these trailers safe and usable again. He said he is in the process of putting a team together to address the safestack issues. I told him what I thought would work, having a full time dockworker at each FAC rebuilding and replacing bars. Any track issues would have to be taken up with a shop location. I offered to help if needed and he’s got my number.

I've been hearing rumblings from the line haul guys that the company is beginning to address the safestack issue at some level. I also heard that's lot's of suits hanging out at XLA these days, don't know what that's about, but maybe safestack beams will be mentioned.

I’m in New England, so the other side of the country. I can’t imagine this will change quickly, if ever. Time will tell. It doesn’t seem that any issues we have as drivers (or dockworkers) are important. The only important thing is money. And lately, I’ve noticed that the company will trip over a dollar to pick up a penny? Don’t know if that’s the phrase I’m looking for, lol.

Good luck. It seems like anything that costs time or money is not going to be heard. This is a terrible system. It catches and grabs the freight and destroys both in the process. On top of being a safety hazard for not only our employees but for our customers. Costs much more money than it saves.

We have a linehaul driver with a broken arm due to SafeStack. Somehow a beam fell and pinned the driver's arm just right and broke a bone near the elbow. Surgery and metal pins required.

Also had a dockworker hit in the head with a beam requiring 15 stitches and possible plastic surgery.
