FedEx Freight | Are we better off since the buyout?

i

It is hard for me to hold onto my optimism when freight gets lean. The 7-day dispatch is like a gut punch when we are sitting for an average of 84 hrs past our availability time It is also bothersome that hiring continues while freight is reduced. If my paycheck ever rebounds to Watkins-level, I might start drinkin the Purple Kool-Aid, but for the time being.......

Are you signing on ready to go or or are you taking time off?

Most of the time signing on ready, but if there is only one or two in line when we arrive, codriver wants to take 24 hours.

Man just add a little Everclear to it and slosh down a couple Purple Passions :hysterical:

If you take your purple passion and add milk by pouring it down the back of a greasy spoon the purple will separate and specific gravity will make it form red and blue stripes. :woohoo1: :console:

Ok I can't say much. We have guys in DLS who take off maximum time then raise heck that they don't go when times up.

Getting forced out for 3 to 5 weeks here in Cinci. This whole thing hasn't been good for me and now it's really not good for my family. Raising 4 kids isn't cheap! I need to work!

Glad your on the boards cinci g. We have a couple guys at our barn on unemployment benefits because of no work. I know its not much but if you want to try and hang in it could help. Good luck.

lets say fedex didnt buy watkins and freight was still down like it is would watkins of slashed prices like others to keep freight if so how would they transfer it to the employees less money comeing in less to pay out them what do you blame if fedex didnt buy them out and they went under it would be their faulght for not buying them.....lots to think about its very easy to blame the buy out which could have some to do with it but there is is a bigger picture behind every sitution......not trying it **** anyone off here just hoping to open eyes:smilie_132: :smilie_132:

Please take time to give your opinion on this subject.

Right now I believe we are better off. I've been with WML for 10 years and let's be honest revenue for the last 3 years has been flat. There weren't many more markets to open up like there were in the early 90's when they opened up Washington, Oregon and Utah. The regional busniess was a last ditch effort to get the company to the billion dollar plateau which it did but we weren't hauling nearly as much regional frt as other carriers. I remember just 10 years ago we were growing faster than Old Dominion and estes and in as little as 10 years both carriers flew right past WML. Don't get me wrong I will miss WML but I am looking forward to the change. I remember when talking to sales reps they were always complaining that AF/FXF was always outpricing all their customers (at least in the northeast they were). and we were to small and couldn't afford to do it. It hasn't even been a year yet since the buyout was complete and people are already writing us off. Mark my word in 2 years we will all be better off. If they hadn't sold to Fedex someone else would have bought us. Eventually there will only be 3 carriers left.

The "Flying F">

I gotta say worse off. I'm on track to make 38% percent less this year from last. We're getting by right now, but barely. I'm gonna keep doing what I'm doing until I can't do it anymore, and then I guess I'll do something else. I was really happy with the "Flying W". I guess I'll ride things out with the "Flying F" and see where that gets me.

So far we are worse off. I'm being forced out and my OM tells me we've never been this slow and they don't know what's going on. Big suprise that they don't know what's going on. I've been forced out for 3 to 5 weeks. Unemployment doesn't pay enough, don't know if I can wait this thing out, but hate to give up my benefits and vacation and personal time. Know what I mean! Hat eto start over somewhere else. Hope it picks up soon. Pretty much all the guys on my dock think we're getting screwed, even one who worked part-time at FXFE before the buyout is worried!

Look at Yellow and Road for answers

I'd worry if you see them sweeping frt off your docks. Big belever that actions speak louder than words.
Yelwo and Roadway were going to remain competitors and only elimminate jobs back at the big old corporate ofices..well they've done that - and now roadway and Yellow are run by the roadway management group. they are also closing terminlas in the same areas...pretty soon youl see the sales force selling both compnys so you know they will eliminate 1/2 the sales people....and then there will be one big compnay with one name - roadway......

IF you think Fedex isn't going to smash operations together - you are nuts - just makes sense from the ivory tower they all sit in - push more frt thru fewer terminals with less people and the bigger ther:butt kiss: bonus!

I agree with this. I say within 5 years after they re engineer all the computer systems, headquarters offices, hr departments and crap like that. May even be sooner than that. Especially since most of WML's terminals are smaller than the FXF ones.

No because that would be like merging Express and Ground hubs/terminals together on the parcel side. They haven't done that, have they? Last time I looked, Ground's HQ was still in Moon Township, Pennsylvania and Express is still in Memphis. Different computer systems. Different hub/terminal layout. That's because there are distinct advantages in having 2 different networks.

Same on the LTL side. You can't push long-haul through short-haul and vice versa. Actually you can because many of our competitors do it. But they can't offer the customer the same service levels that we do.

Will there be some consolidations? I would imagine so - especially on the customer service and sales side. But they will never merge the two systems on an operational level.
