I've been to the motels in NSH (hilltop) and MEM, and both of them are dumps in comparison to places like STL, DET, COL, or CVE. In addition to the accommodations being sub-par, the local clientele will not let you get a wink of sleep. For example, yesterday I awoke to a loud TV, even louder people talking outside my door, and another woman yelling at her baby. This was in addition to some repair work (drilling) (or very bad water pipes) that was being done.

It seems to me that Yellow doesn't have a very good relationship with motels in TN, because both places are pretty far away from the terminals compared to the above mentioned cities. Which reminds me that the shuttle service is just as poor as the motels they service.

I keep on hearing drivers complain about these places and can't understand how this happened. Is there something being done about it and if not how can one get it changed?

First you have to file a grivence talk to your stewart good luck you got my vote I stay there 3 times a week and it sucks

Unfortunately when I came in this morning one of my stewards was leaving the terminal. I think I'll start with pictures, but the problem is, I don't get there that much being on the extra board.

You have the support of half of the company that stay's there. I have complained twice already and I heard that COL was to send someone down there to investigate. NSH is the worst. No hot water, roaches, and prostitutes beating on your door at 3:00 am. Talked to the owner of the hotel and he denyies any of this. I will talk to my steward and I suggest you do the same. It is awful. I am just waiting to hear about a driver geting shot. Keep us posted.

Yeah, I'll talk to my steward. I heard a rumor that somebody was shot in a bar near there. My room had a new air conditioner that wasn't put together correctly (everything was falling off of it), but it worked. Although my hot water worked, I had a busted wall. The place just makes you feel like it's unclean. Especially when you pick up the phone and it's dirty or when you throw back the sheets on your bed it has cigarette holes in it. Before I do anything, I make sure that everything works correctly in the room and proceed to wipe the surfaces down with Clorox wipes, and then spray it with Lysol.

My main problem is the people that stay there as well. They're mainly vagabonds who could care less who they're disturbing by their actions. You know the type who sits in their room with the door wide open on a hot day and turns the volume up sky high so they can hear it when they walk out on the balcony to chit chat with some other loser that happens to be passing by.

I'll be sure to keep everyone posted. In the meantime, if those of you who also have stayed there could take pictures and talk to your stewards as well, it could speed up the process.

I was coming back to ATL from STL, about a year ago, when my trusty steed died enroute at Newstead, KY. After a few cellular pow-wow's with the "think tank" in ATL and waiting 5 hrs. for my "fresh" horse from NSH, it was decided that I'd take 'Ol Yeller to NSH terminal and go to bed there. Little did I know that the accomodations were at the old Mercury motor lodge, the scroungiest, nastiest "motel?" in Nashville, Tn...

HeadRush, those Vagabonds that you mentioned? They had to be new to Nashville and didn't know any better... The seasoned, veteran bums around Nashville won't even stay in that dump!...

Hindsight is 20-20, right? If I ever have to go to bed in NSH again, I'll stay at the YMCA before I go back to the old Mercury...
The Y and the downtown mission have way nicer facilities, and clientele, than the old Mercury...

On a serious note: I would have assumed that something would have been done about the situation at NSH by now, especially by the drivers that run bids there. Before you guys take any action, check the grievance agendas on your respective union boards to see if cases already exist or check with your stewards. I would almost bet that there is action pending. Just check that before you submit a grievance on your behalf...

Also... You're right on track, HeadRush, about the pictures. When filing a lodging grievance, submit any pictures you can detailing your complaint about unsanitary conditions or lack of cleanliness... Search for and submit any factual reports about safety issues/criminal activity (drug activity, prostitution, etc.) whether it be police blotters or print media or documented cases that involved drivers staying there previously (theft, robbery, beatings, etc.)... Sad to say but the procedure for investigating lodging grievances take some time. That motel in NSH is ripe for an inspection. The conditions there warrant immediate attention... Any of you linehaul Stewards from CNC, RAN, CG-B,W or N, CVE, COL, or DET care to interject anything here?...

Thanks for the info Hi way Hombre. I will do that and check with my steward. The next time I will arm myself with photo's and will try to find other evidence to support the case. Like head rush I am new to yellow, I started last July and would rather find out all the info from the senior drivers, before going in unprepared. Thanks for your help.

DETrob, I know that the motel situation is a serious matter but I'm going to stray from the subject for a moment and discuss filing a grievance (I'm sure that there are some great Stewards at DET but I'm just throwing this out there for "FYI" just in case anyone can use it)...
1. Be as succinct as possible (clear and brief).
2. Remember, your grievance is not a sounding board, a vent or a *****/gripe post. Stick with the facts only. When it is a clear cut violation, state that the action violated a certain section of the contract.
3. You're grievance must be contractual and factual. Always base your grievance on a pertaining article and include always this (or similar) phrase, "any other articles that apply".
4. Be specific with your remedy request. As above, be succinct with your remedy and always include, at the end of your remedy request, "to be made whole in every way"... That only keeps the door open for negotiating a settlement by your Steward, Agent or Committee...

In a nutshell:
1. What happened or failed to happen?
2. Why is the situation a grievance?
3. How should the employer correct the situation?

For what it's worth... Hang on to that. You may need it one of these days...

As for the motel situation... It's no big secret on this site by all (union/non-union freighthaulers) that's ever ran laydowns, occasionally we all become 2d rate citizens in 3d rate accomodations. Fortunately, we (union) do have some recourse, by way of the grievance machinery, that's provided to us in our contract. But, as I stated earlier, the wheels of justice can turn slow... In the meantime, you have to use your best judgement and common sense to take care of #1 (you) first, when you encounter these situations. If the bedsheets are dirty and they look like the wolfman just crawled out of them, call the front desk and tell them to send the housekeeper to your room with clean sheets. If you have any problem, call the desk and complain. If you get no results, call the terminal and get them involved. If they don't get the situation corrected, request to be moved, and be persistent. If you get no results, call CDO, your Steward, your BA, whoever... What I'm getting at is this, don't take no crap from those rat hole motel people... Simply because we stay at those places for a reduced rate doesn't mean we stay there for reduced service, too... Be firm. Raise hell with them, but always in a tactful, mannerable way... Don't open yourself up for some type of action by them or the co.

The company's motto: We'll stay in no motel, that's not run by a Patel...

Oh yeah, one more thing guys... Please, please read and understand your contract before you become involved in ANY confrontation or stand-off with MGMT.
Know your contract and your legal rights!... And keep your contract book with you always!... And always have contact numbers (stewards, BA's, etc.) with you at all times...

And whatever you do, don't let them see you sweat! :1036316054:

Send the picture of the smoke detector to the Nashville fire marshal. There is a history of motel complaints in NSH going nowhere. I suggest reporting things to Days Inn corporate and to the code enforcement people. He gets enough heat and figures out where its coming from and he will throw us out to shut off the blow torch.

Beating these people at the lodging game is real hard. When I worked for Red Star we had a case actually go to NY State court in Buffalo and we lost it because of the contract wording reguarding lodging. The Motel in Question was one of those transiet motels used by the welfare system. We also had one in Baltimore where dead bodies were found on the elevator car roofs and gun fights happened in the hall ways.we couldn't get out of their either. This is one tough road to hoe. Good luck guys.

This situation is one that called for everyone refusing to stay there. If no one would stay there, then they have three choices, replace all the drivers, stop putting drivers to bed there or changing motels. Last I heard, there was a driver shortage. The problem is, people wont stick together.

Calling the Day's Inn won't work. All you'll get is lip service. I had a similar situation last winter at the Ramada in CTI. They didn't plow or clean up after ice storm and drivers were let out on a scating rink. I was told by corporate that this was an independent franchisee and they were not responsible. However, the would forward by message to the General Manager. This is the same BOZO who told me don't tell me tell maintenance.

After fiasco of checking beds and finding pubic hair I gave up and transfered to CGB bid,Love the Bridgeview!:chairshot:
