First let me say, I respect seniority, but i really despise the fact that some of the senior guys continuously play the seniority card to get what they want...what THEY think they deserve. I hear it every day..where's junior, why do I have to do this...why is junior taking my tractor... why is junior getting more over time than me...junior should do the truck swap...junior should be breaking sets and backing in trailers...junior should have that run....junior purposely beat me to the reship..."seniority doesn't mean sh*t in this barn" boo hoo hoo and on and on and on. I realize some supervisors practice favoritism and in those few cases you seniors have a point, but in my barn, and probably most barns, this is not the case. Senior is assigned duties because there's no one else or it's the most logical thing to do. Supervisors have to work smart and they work for Con-way, not for the senior guys. Will someone please explain to me why senior shouldn't perform the tasks stated above? Why is it managements fault that junior beats senior to the reship? Why is it managements fault that junior jumped into "your" tractor because no one told him NOT to, afterall we don't assign tractors, correct? Why should a supervisor send junior, who started 2 or 3 hours later than senior, on the shortest p&d run and senior, who started earlier, on the longest? As a company trying to make money, does that make sense? Send senior on the longest so he can get 3 hours overtime today....that makes financial sense. Some of you think that seniority means you have power, a certain right to protest...throw it in the faces of your supervisors everytime you don't want to do something. Think about what you're doing when you do this...you're making it a hostile environment for the junior guys, and for everyone present. I understand if you have a legitimate complaint but the most common complaints I hear are utterly ridiculous, and for the most part...the way it has to be so please just STOP complaining. The type of atmosphere this creates contributes to low morale alot more than you realize.

:Violin: In our yard, XCN, P&D runs are assigned to individual drivers based and picked by seniority. Those P&D runs in our yard are also assigned tractors with that paticular route as well. Our night linehaul senior drivers, for the most part usually are able to take the same tractor each night. But your right, they all say Conway on the side, and on paper, they are not assigned to drivers. But if a guy with 17+ years in has a newer tractor and usually takes that same tractor everyday or night, yeah he is going to be pissed a bit if junior takes it. I would be too! The negative attitude and seniority attitude that junior should do this cause I'm senior man has got to stop! we are all on the same level, 5 or more years in and we are all on the same pay scale too. Remember senior, junior is the future of this company, treat him like you would want to be treated. After all, it is junior thats going to be here after you retire to help ensure that Conway will continue to be successfull and continues to grow, not to mention the fact that junior will help make sure the company is still together so that you can have some sort of retirement from this company. Remember, a negative attitude spreads like cancer, lets just come in with a smile, do a great job, and all will be well.:smilie_132:

Signed, 2+ year Junior

I thought it was a pretty good post 'till you got to this part.

I would say I will be there with bells on, but my seniority doesn`t get me out of chicagoland!

Some guys get so worked up. They walk around like they are a doctor or somebody that is not replacable. I ask them how can you b#tch when you have been the #1 guy since The company started.

whats wrong with that part?

When I agreed to work here they said I would have a pension and would retire with FULL benefits. But, alas, all of the reasons that I care if this company lived on and prospered are gone.

Oddly enough, and in coincidental reference to this topic, and as I have stated before;
The only thing of value that I would lose if Conway were to lock the gates would be my seniority.

But some would have them take seniority away too.

........Wouldn't surprise me if Conway did. - Maybe to make us more competitive, or maybe to enhance our total rewards somehow.

I got something to say about seniority. I have 14 years with this company and in those years you could say that I have put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this job. I get really irritated when some rookie comes in and wants to drive a new truck and run 500+ miles and to top it off walk around like he knows everything. Where were you when we were out here driving the old cabover freightliners or the L series fords? Where were you when the trucks didnt have power steering or A/C or heated mirrors or Jake breaks. Where were you when we had to adjust our own breaks and come down the grade with 80000lbs w/o jakes? Where were you when we were working the docks with palletjacks and freight carts because most of the freight was handfreight and forklifts were a rare thing and the forklifts we had were diesel and half of the time you felt nauseous from the fumes? Where were you when we carried overnight bags with us because we didnt know if we were turning that night or linehaul might tell us to keep going? You werent here, we were, so we paid our dues. I do feel that seniority has its privileges adn if a senior driver wants a new truck or an easier night, so be it. Quit your whining I have a lot respect for the guys that are ahead of me and have no problem with them getting coice on trucks and runs ahead of me . By the way at my barn trucks are assigned. I drive a 2006 and that truck goes with me were I go its assigned to me at night and its assigned during the day, nobody else drives it unless I'm off or the P&D driver is off,

What a bunch of crap!! I have more time than you but have never thought I deserved more than anyone else. Paid your dues?? So you think you have something extra coming to you because of your tenure on the job?? You do.......... Vacation and bid picks!! It's time for senior employees to stop coming to work with the attitude that this company owes you something because you've been here for 15 or 20 years. Yeah, I remember cab overs, manual stearing and all the other things you mentioned, so what?? Quit feeling all high an mighty for christ sake, go to work, do your job, and quit whinnig about what you DON'T get. The bottom line is, after vacation and bids, seniority means nothing.

Pallet Jacks, adjusting your own brakes, that sounds like 40 years instead of 14. :hysterical: :hysterical:

I remember those diesel forklifts they really smoked. We had one guy at CF (the old CF) he use to block off the air intake and back into the trailer you were working and stomp on the fuel. Nothing but black smoke, you could not stand it. At night after you got home and showered, I would blow my nose, it was nasty black gunk. Just what I wanted in my lungs.

Sorry I got off topic, I will be quite now!!!

Yea. This attitude that seniors have about the company, or juniors, owing them something is really annoying. Ya, you get the better truck, pic vaca earlier than we do, bid for better start times.....but thats it bro. We are all here doing the same job.:smilie_132:

O, and the "where was I" thing....I was most likey in the 6th or 7th grade when you adjusting your own brakes and pallet jacking everything.:1036316054: So this is my fault why? Im supposed to owe you something and bow down to your seniority because I am half your age and was learning basic arithmatic when you were being super-employee :biglaugh:

Ya right. Take your power trip somewhere else. Believe you me, I am the first FNG to help a guy out when he needs it, but do you think any senior guys stop what they are doing to help me??? Not a chance. The difference is I respect them for their seniority and will help them out....until the power trips start. Then your on your own.

i agree with some of the last few post we (i'm second at our termal) have had a few agreements about what happens at our terminal. we use the same dollies to cover our own butts , if your power unit is in the shop you are to use the next avalible 9 or 8 .the top dsr has been cough short but has been told a 9 is a 9.he gets first on vac and bids and that where it ends.there is no bumping of power units just because of air ride or air(we have 1,9 with air)i after 19yrs have hade air so i live with it if i'm light enough to run i take an 8 w/air and so be it . before anyone crabs about keeping the same dollie(tick, converter)we are a small tm w/5 dollies and 4 l/h runs. but maybe some of these things should be discused and agreements made, set a standard in your own terminal and deal with it if there are adjustments to be made do it

Does anyone out there think that this is exactly what G.O. wants? Squabbling amongst ourselves over petty crap keeps our attention off of what really matters. What concerns you most about what's going on with this company?
My biggest concern is (fill in blank here). Is it anything that has to do with this thread. If you go back and read the very first post that started this thread, you might see someone who is not a driver trying to instigate problems between drivers. He starts by saying he respects seniority and then goes through every reason he doesn't. That sounds like a confused white shirt to me. Who is trying to cause problems? What is the solution?
