Probably should have been reposted in Jan. 2010, but it's still funny to follow up on peoples' "predictions" of Con-way's demise.
Yeah, the prediction thingy..i missed that post before posting mine.
In the next five years the entire landscape is going to change.
These LTL compnaies have set the hiring standards to such a point that most don't qualify. These concerns are more enamored by the CSA requirements than engaging themselves in the professional driver paradigm.
If you haven't taken notice...several companies (including this one) have re-established the truck driver training schools...
Why???...
The reason is simple...most qualified drivers want nothing from the LTL market. The reputation of these companies (this one included) is well known. They would rather make less money and do without prima donna BS. This and other companies have garnered a reputation that most want to avoid. Therefore these concerns are forced to make available a driver training program as opposed to hiring qualified peeps.
You reap what you sow....
and these jerkoffs have been sowing for a long time.

By the same token you have an equal number of qualified drivers in the truckload market that would jump to the LTL business in a heartbeat because of the money and benefits, not to mention hometime. It depends on what market you live in and how inundated it is with drivers as to how easy it is for you to make the jump. Took me 3 years of trying to get off the road. It'd be a cold day down south for me to jump back up into a truck with a sleeper on it.

if you want my 2 cents worth; I think it will go out of business 4 years after all the real truckers retire and the company has to depend on all these new crying people coming from out of business companies. but i am just speculating.. lets just truck and be happy

While I agree with you, unless you love the lifestyle its hard, especially linehaul..Working 14 hrs everynight, and if youre the last man from your SIC you will be held hostage at the FAC. You will go home, sleep eat an be a zombie. Woe be onto those that have a wife or kid.

I'm old road trash, spent over 5 years out OTR and I miss it some days, but not the being gone weeks at a time. I'd like to find a balance, get to see some country and still get home. But I DON'T want to sleep in a truck anymore! It ain't trucking unless you got 2 trailers!

Agreed man, though Ive never done OTR. Pulling a van is so boring. Hopefully I'll be pulling wiggle wagons for the rest of my trucking career

Dude i gotta say I dont mind being a dock monkey, just let me get a run every once in a while..lolThere is something about stripping and loading that gets me...Nothing like a trailer cubed out, straps and dunnage and proper use of safestack. Call me crazy

It does make ya feel kinda good, don't it? What gets me is when you get the trailer that is hopeless even when you rework it, floored out, ugly freight all over. And, I just don't like doing the dock work that much. I'll do it as long as it's a condition of my employment, but no longer!
