I am a second generation teamster. I started my freight career when I was 20 working the dock and P.I.E (it is a cwx barn now). When they folded I went to C.F. I hated Con-Way for years for all the money that went that way from C.F.(Not looking to debate that just making a point.)I would be in my 156-3466 which was a Ford 7000 with no power steering and a black vinal seat in california in the summer time and it never failed a Con-Way driver would back in next to me with his windows up and his hair blowing in the AC:smilie_132:. When C.F. folded I moved to a different state and tried for a year to get another union job with in 100 miles of where I live with no luck. I finally applied at Con-Way and they hired me. I still hated it. As I was working there for the first couple years I kept telling myself it was just temporary until I found something else. I did too. I found several other jobs including 2 teamster jobs that I ended up passing on. Both of which I would be laid off from right now instead of making my 50k in the city and sleeping in my bed every night. I am not happy with the things that have dissapeared from my benifit package at Con-Way but they are still not to bad. In fact the 401k has grown on me to the point that I like it better than the pension they took away. 200 something a week from the company is pretty good. I think that the pension contribution for teamsters is only 300 something and that is if they make it all the way to collect. I am worried about Yellow, I read their board and it sounds like a song i have heard before. My biggest fear is that if Yellow bellies up that the teamsters will be so weak then that we will lose more bennies. In the mean time though I have a job that pays good, it still has decent benifites and a really good 401k that I can take with me if something happens instead of getting a fraction of a pension if I did not have my 30 years in, I have a nice route with a decent 04 truck with ps and ac!The bottom line is I am thankful that I work at Con-Way and I like it now and if you would have told me that I would fell this way a couple years ago I would have laughed in your face.
