I stopped a Regional VP as he was returning to the terminal from lunch and asked him some questions about the change. He told me that we should know something early next week if not Friday. He said that he would be in a conference call Friday concerning the change. I asked what the hold up was and he said that Yellow 's labor people and Tyson Johnson where discussing several things including the UE. He told me this would be the largest change in the history of the company and that it would affect about everything east of the Mississippi. He said that the change would create more sort hubs and that some lanes would see a reduction of transit times as much as two days( 4 days to 2 days). He said there would be more meet turns, I asked if UE's would run them and he said that he would not know the answer to that until Friday. I just thought I would let you guys know.

Thanks for the info. Those meet and turns better be mostly done by road drivers I hope.

I just wanted to let you know that it is hard for me to concentrate on what I'm trying to read when your avatar is on the same screen. It took me forever to get through reading all of what Teamcujo had to say. Your making life tough, brother.

Just my .02 worth, I think that the utilities will run these meets, as well as the satellites. This would only be the beginning of the utilities versatility, as we progress into this next day freight we may see some of our smaller turns become utility operated. I think that this is what is holding up the COO, Tyson is trying to make sure that the utility doesn't take from the road work. However, the way the new language reads, I think they have a clean sheet of paper. This new utility commission, if you will, will have their hands full sorting this stuff out. Personally I believe you will see the utility person doing a lot of work once covered by the road. 1st would be your satellites, 2nd your turns would have stageing areas at DC's, 3rd you small laydowns would become meets, 4th your long laydowns would become relays or meets. All this done with utilities providing there is a piece of utility freight on the trailer, and for anything else they have the contract service for hire. One thing is for sure is that, by the end of this contract, YRC's operations will be a lot different from what we know today. And, in todays market, just be thankful you have a job with benefits. Piece and Good Luck to All.

I'm confused.... I thought a utility driver is under LOCAL CARTAGE. Wouldn't it be cheaper for a road driver to run than a hourly, a dollar more at that, driver to do?

Man, I've been thinking the same thing.

Based on the language in the new contract, doesn't this make sense? I bet I can guess the answer to that part about UE's.

500 miles @.57=$285....roughly 8 to 10 hours worth of work. 10 hours @ 23.77 =$237....for every 500 miles they will save $48 plus increase transit times....whats not to love? Not to mention, UE's can load and hook their own units. Yet more savings......

I've had it pointed out to me that , for example, a UE out of KC could turn STL-- meet a UE out of Indy-- drop/hook, and be on they're way. Then that UE out of Indy could meet a UE out of COL-- etc,etc,etc...... result-- KC to Boston in about three days-- for less time and money than waiting on yard guys to drop and hook road drivers.....

Not so tough for me brother, just harder and harder!

Geez, I think you've captured it in a nutshell. They save both money and time.

What about OT?

Also wouldn't meet and turn increase transit times instead?
I mean trying to time two drivers as opposed to just one? Loading delays, breakdowns etc...

I guess they would be saving on a bed as well.I think the average they pay is around $37.00 per driver.

That's right a UE is a 10hr bid right? I didn't think it was cheaper I'm suprised, and like you say that's not counting drop/hooks.

I think there are two choices on that bid.
Four 10 hour days or five 8 hour days.

Personally I would take the 8hour days since the opportunity for OT is greater.

Hey just remember, they aren't re-inventing the wheel here, they are pulling from well established resources in the freight industry.

Yea ... Talk about fuzzy math
500 miles in 10 hours first you must average 50mph under optimum conditions
Now what I want to know is....where is the drop and hook time x2 to swap these sets? Lets say it's just a clean drop and hook .50clicks = $17.82 each driver
Where is the wait time for the guy that shows up late? Lets go with just a 15 minute delay .25 clicks $8.91 which we know it's not going to be THAT short of a delay. there is no way you are coordinating a 250 mile turn to a perfect meet time!
There is no room for any unforseen delays that will put you out of service for time constraints on driving at hourly pay for the WHOLE time you are in bed!!!!
So out of the box it costs $3.00 Plus more without even thinking about any REAL problems
8hrs @ $23.77= $190.16
2hrs @ $35.65= $71.31
d&h @ 50 $17.82
delay@ .25 $8.91
total $288.16
That is optimum conditions
One driver gets put to bed for
10hr@ $23.77= $237.70 1xweek plus the original $288.16
total $525.86

Divide that into 5 days $105.17
add that to the original $288.16
Total $393.33 divide that by 10.75 hrs
for $36.58 an hr
There are alot more things to take into consideration
This is just minimum for more than optimum conditions

IN NUMBERS THERE IS STRENGTH!!!!
