former preston drivers

What was up with Preston's West Lafayette, OH terminal? It seems like you never heard much about it and it always looked deserted.

West Lafayette, OH terminal was not open very long as I remember. I was the first road driver to arrive there as I took the office equipment when they were getting ready to open it. Eveyone called it "hooterville" because it was sorda in the middle of No where, Oh.
I don't think there was much freight in that area so I guess that's why it was only open a year or two

Theres several of former 118 and 1 from 119 people at ABf Carlisle. Some have already retired the rest of us just slaving away.

i like those trucks. can you still buy them? i would be interested in reviving the preston site. other than a co manager i worked with in columbus, ohio, i have not seen a preston person in years

boy i tell you, I start the thread and then i dont come and read for while. guys i am sorry about that. it is great to hear from all of you. i started in columbus ohio right out of college in 1990. I ended up in richfield. I will agree it was the best job in the freight industry, but things change, what can you do about it. i know where a few people are but i dont see many preston people anymore. for all of you who did not know, buddy greenhawk passed away a few years back.

Cincinnati Was 230. But Preston Did Have Decent Bunk House Out East. I Still Ware My Preston Hat From Time To Time.

101 in Harrison NJ, (Jersey City), had a real decent bunkhouse. Enough vending machines in the drivers room to feed an army. Clean rooms and showers, plus big screen tv's (for their time) and bumper pool tables in the rec room.

If you are talking about scale models, just look on Ebay. They are for sale constantly.....you just gotta look.

Someone will know that.
I heard the reason once , but cann't remember .
I worked for Preston in Chicago for a couple of months after Churchill closed in '94.

What did "The 151 Line" refer to?
Look at this model of an original truck.

What did "The 151 Line" refer to?

I don't know for fact but I believe that reference had to do with the amount of trucks the old man had at one time. That was a damn shame the way they closed,Its kind of like Jevic now,the kind of man that created companies like those I really dont think exist anymore.A handshake and a mans word was good as gold, hard work and loyalty was all that counted to these men, nowdays its cost per bill and keeping the stock holders happy.

That terminal was actually on Harrison Ave. in Kearny, NJ (just over the line from Harrison) and was originally built for Maislin Transport in 1974 when Maislin had to move from it's former location in East Rutherford, NJ at the site of the current Meadowlands racetrack/Giants stadium complex.

What did "The 151 Line" refer to?

Besides coming from the number of vehicles as already stated, I had originally heard that it came from the company address - 151 Easton Blvd., Preston, MD.

I spent 12 years at the sb 209 terminal, which is South Bend, Indiana. I left when Yellow bought the corporation in 1993, as I could see they had no interest in keeping Preston. My personal opinion Preston was the best freight company to work for. They were named one of the best 100 companies in america to work for, and that is quite an honor for a trucking company. (as they were the only one to accomplish this)
I probally work with a dozen of the guys that came over after preston closed, sb was a shippers dispatch board before preston bought them, and a lot of the drivers retired.
Companies like Preston have almost all gone to the wayside, most of the trucking companies today are owned by corporations that have stockholders to answer to.

R & L has that terminal now.

I was in sales till the shut down. Working in Jersey City, TM at Long Island, and National Accounts based in Philly.

Can you believe it's 9 years in July?? We were awesome right till the end when Yellow pulled the strings.

You know, they only bought us just to get Saia. They had intentions on shedding the Union just like Roadwy and CF did...

Look at how much they sunk into them at the time while leaving us to wallow.

Yellow did a bang up job with Jevic also, not asking the fromer owner to sign a non- compete. My disdain for Yellow is high. Not the employees, but what the brand stands for: company killer.
