I really would like some honest opinions from you guys whether starting out a UPS freight at this time would be a good move.

I was under the impression it would be, being a major union carrier but after reading through this board I am not sure.

I have a couple other options but I am looking long term and something stable with decent pay.

I do not like to job hop and have only had three jobs in the past 18 years.

A layoff is forcing a move and I need advice.

Thanks

If y ou start off as a part time dock worker be ready to take a big pay cut i would guess. Its 10.50 per hour so your average check would be $250-280 after taxes/union dues.

but after reading through this board I am not sure.

If You have the opportunity to get in... Then Get In Now!

Forget about what You are reading (the negative stuff... anyways)

You have to understand... We are or are still Digging Ourselves into the Trenches... In hopes of Creating a Better Tomorrow - for All of Us! :1036316054:

Remember, what you are reading makes up less than 1% of the total company's employee's. You say you are looking at long term. If thats the case, You need to get in while you can. No matter what the pros and cons are, UPS is a good company to work for regarding wages, benefits, pension and job security. This company will be around long after you and I are gone. Good luck

I have to agree!:1036316054: Think Long-Term.
The window of opportunity might not open again.
As raw as we are, we'll be on the same page one day.
I see many many opportunities for us to make substantial improvements.

However, continue to do your homework, ask many questions both here and in the interview.

I know a guy that worked at my terminal got fed up with local mangement after 1 year working at Con-Way and got hired at ups freight for more $$$$ and less BS.
He called yesterday and said he loves it there.

yea

then after a year at coway he'll feel the same way, you think our management has issues, igive him a year , it will be ditto there:hide:

Hey CMSDOCK. How come cms is paying $11.25 an hour for partime dockworkers. And it seems most or all other locations are only paying $10.50.

I not complaining at all just curious. And what is the name of the assistant terminal name at your location. Trying to get on there. Oh by the way help me get on I will give you $50 dollars. :1036316054:

Aikido, I put in the good word for you. When you get hired, please send the $50 my way. :hysterical:

jump in

come on in man the water is fine. the insurance package is good, the work seems to be steady.yes we got some stuff to work through but who dont. get in now dont wait.

roadrnnr2007 you did not specify if you would be working road or city/dock local work. If you are considering road work and you are hiring on at a large center, re: Harrisburg, Gaffney, etc., then be prepared for short work weeks. Perhaps you may be at one of the smaller centers and they will be needing the extra help. The larger centers tend to use CONTRACT CARRIERS and allow those folks on the bottom plenty of "stay at home time", and "will call you at any time, so keep the cell handy".

Good luck and welcome aboard, ( I suppose ).

Do you know at least one person where you work that is always unhappy and b!tching and moaning all the time?

You know the type...nothing is ever good enough.

Put together one of those people, each from several different terminals across the country and ..... you have the what you read here.

Some of it is legit since we are going through changes after bought by UPS... and of course the majority of employees being union for the first time as a company.

Starting from scratch you should be fine since you weren't here to see how nice a place it was to work when it was Overnite.

Everybody will be letting people go sooner or later. The Pie keeps shrinking and there will not be enough to feed everybody, BECAUSE OF PRIDE some outfits wont layoff they will just starve people out. Now if anyone thinks there is a company out there that is to big or strong to lay people off, think C F.

You'll be ok if you get into the right terminal with a good local, or you'll be fighting everyday and greiving things everyday like Nightwalker's terminal. One headache after another. Good Luck to ya.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing as roadrnnr. there seems to be a lot of uncertinty on this board. I have been following it for awhile now, sometimes I get the impression its a pain to work for a union company. I don't understand lots of it

Some companies don't like to layoff because they don't want to pay unemployment. They string you along as needed. You eventually get tired of it and move on. That is step one in my opinion. Last resort is layoff.

UPS is stronger and better managed than the former CF. CF was eventually mis-managed into the ground causing it's demise. I feel bad for these guys but it's old news, not worth debating in here and hopefully everyone has moved on from that era.

Can you elaborate on what kinds of impressions you are getting?
Maybe we can help you understand some of it.
