I am currently with UPS as a feeder driver. I have 32 years and can retire. I saw a job listing in the local paper for a day tractor trailer driver for FedEx freight. Anyone out there work for them ? How is this company to work for ? I am 55 , in good shape, and plan to work at least another 10 years.

Welcome aboard tae111.

What's wrong with staying at UPS for 10 more years?

I am moving this topic from the UPS Freight forum to FedEx Freight forum.
You should get better feedback in there.

I'm thinking that $3700 per month pension from UPS plus what FedEx pays might make a nice paycheck. The add said FedEx ground daytime driver needed for local work at Dover, NJ. CDL class A with doubles endorsment.

that's a different fedex operating company. They are contractors. Unless you buy your own truck you are working for the owner of the truck not fedex. The ground driver that runs my area drives for the owner of his truck and he is salaried and has little in the benefits department

I know a few FedEx ground drivers and yes they own the route and truck. I don't know any tractor trailer drivers and always wondered how they feed their hubs. The Fedex ground facility in Dover is only a few years old.The add said nothing about owner operators. The add read exactly as I have stated. I am going to call Monday and find out the scoop.

The purpose of the origional question was to find someone who actually works for this company driving tractor trailer and their expierance in that capacity. I don't need medical benefits as they, for a nominal fee, will be part of my retirement package.

I'm freight but as I understand becoming a Ground company driver is a pretty good and a rare opportunity....grab it if you can!!! They do have company drivers , just not many.

I have a hard time believing you have 32 years at UPS as a teamster. You have to be very naive to think you can collect your pension while driving a non-union truck at Fedex. Why would you leave brown making almost $30 an hour benefits fully paid, to go to a non-union freight company at the bottom of the seniority list. I would assume with 32 years you have a good bid and lots of seniority.

I don't know about FedEx rules but here you can retire, collect your pension, and do whatever you want. No restrictions as to driving. This is NJ. I did package for 24 years and feeders for almost 9. Here we have 2 seniority list. one for company and one for classification. The company seniority gives you vacation pick and layoff protection. the classification seniority is for everything else so I'm not as high up as you might think. I'm just trying to weigh my options here that is why my origional question was how it is to work for them. I am fully aware of what I would be giving up and there is no pressing issues for me to leave. I'm just thinking that 6 figures for 40 hours might be nice if the conditions were right.

I was not aware that you are in NJ,and they have no restrictions on what type of work you can do while collecting your pension. This is the first I have ever heard of this,so I apologize to you. That is awesome if you can collect your pension and not have any restrictions on where you can work. Other states have very strict policies on what type of work you can do while collecting your pension. Good luck !

I know here in New England you CANNOT collect a Teamster pension and then work in the same craft ever without paying a penalty.

I've heard that in other areas they have restrictions. I belong to Local 177 and fortunatly we have no restrictions on employment after retirement. We also max out at 30 years and unless we get an increase at contract time (seems doubtfull under the present conditions) we get nothing more for working longer. I've heard that you folks in New England get pension increases for working past 30 years.

If I read you right you are saying you want to work for FedEx FREIGHT. Well first I will tell you that you are better off staying here you are. Second FedEx will not hire you because you are union.

I wouldn't say that you couldn't get hired. They've hired several of us degenerates. But you should be careful about using that word, it gets some peoples panties in a bunch.

Hairbear,
You Good old Boys in Sac lost your -U- vote a couple of Weeks ago,Just get with the program and lets make the Best of It for Us out here in the West:smilie_132:

u may want to check with union if u take a non union job about if u lose or keep pention just a thought my father almost lost his something about doing a job a union member could do

Now that the economy looks like it may tank I've decided to stay with big brown. It would have been nice to collect my pension and work for FedEx but I have 2 kids in collage and need the steady paycheck for now. My union officials said it would not be an issue wherever I decided to work as our pension has no restrictions for employment. The only restriction is I can't work for UPS and still collect.
