Rumor has it that YRC announced to stunned employees at the Central Rating/Collections Center in Topeka, KS today that effective December 31, 2008, the Center was closing and that 92 employees would be out of jobs! The majority of employees there are non-union hourly employees, and make pretty good money as rate clerks, collection clerks, etc...

Some of the work is being moved to Overland Park, where employees will be allowed to "apply" for the jobs. Not sure if they will lose their "seniority" if they transfer, and not sure if any employees were offered "severance pay packages"! Additional jobs are being OUTSOURCED TO INDIA, and several employees have been training the people from India how to do their jobs!
How would you like to train someone who is going to take your job offshore and work for 10% of your wages?!

One thing I do know....the employees at the General Offices in Overland Park and Akron better wise up now and contact Teamsters Local 41 in KC and Teamsters Local 24 in Akron and sign cards to get into the union and get covered under a union contract! Who knows how many more jobs will be "outsourced to India" by Dollar Bill and the Smidster! My heart goes out to those employees in Topeka, many of whom have 20 years or more with Yellow and now are being "KICKED TO THE CURB"!:chairshot::shock:

Thats awful and always hard to hear when this happenings in regards to outsourcing jobs.

america the land of the rich and throw the working class out. remember rich and powerful ceo's when you start chipping away at the base it will topple over when it gets top heavy. support the american working man we are the base and lifeline of america. stop abuse of the middleclass

Non-union hourly employess have no seniority, no severance pay ( that's too funny:hysterical:) If they live near Overland park and wish to APPLY , but is guess is, they won't be taking any applications "at this time"

If they are lucky, maybe the company will at least give them paycheck for any unused sick & vaction pay, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that one either.

I don't think these kinda of office will be going to India, just reduce the workers and give more work to the remaining..... That's one of the results when 2 serarate companies "intergrate". We will only need one companies "rating system, filing system, collections, claims, etc.....

from what i heard, it isn't just a rumor, but truth. apparently they were told that there are 30 jobs at the g.o., but 90 people to apply for them. some of those that are in topeka moved down there from the non-union customer service center in des moines.

Here is the way it was explained to me when I was let go on 9/2: I am "welcome to apply" for a position, however the most qualified candidate will get the job. Also, current employees losing their job or those of us who lost our jobs do NOT get preference. Furthermore, you will be asked to sign a separation agreement. Article 10 of the separation agreement basically says you are signing away your right to apply for any position now or in the future and you will not seek employement with any YRC company. If you don't sign the separation agreement you don't get the severance..
To those of you at TRC, I know some of you and have had the pleasure of working with you. Good Luck and don't go quietly, I sure didn't.

i realize we are teamsters, and with that comes teamster pay and benefits, but could someone tell me any other reason why someone would want to work for yrc?

I sure as hell can't. Maybe the local up there should organize a support rally. I know most of them are not union but maybe our brothers and sisters up there can support the fellow YRC employees. Just a thought.

my grandpa retired for this topeka kansas yellow term. very sad. alot of good people are getting cut by that worse than walmart company called YRC

That's how RED STAR got closed---- 15 clerks in Phili Pa wanted to join the union and everyone in the company walked to show support and never got back to work--- I was one of them---

Sorry to hear you got the axe. Hope you had time to prepare before it fell. I'm playing suitcase warrior trying to dodge it also.

I suggest everyone use this as an indicator its time to build up your "Rainy Day Fund". That will give you some time if the axe gets you.

When I was at USF RED STAR and they closed I applied at YELLOW for whom I worked before and was told that a more qualified person was chosen---- I had over 25 years experience and worked for most big carriers part time at some point on the road and local. So don't expect too much cause they are going for the younger generation.

I believe you are right. They can pay them less, and keep them longer without having retirement issues in the nextt few years, and train another person again.....
