Diesel Slips to $2.939 per Gallon

Five-week climbing streak ends as price drops seven-tenths of a cent

Slipping an average of seven-tenths of a cent across the country, the price of diesel ended a five-week climb at $2.939 per gallon Monday, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The average price of diesel fuel has risen 46 percent since just over a year ago, when it hit bottom at $2.017 on March 16, 2009, the lowest point in the last five years.

In the past year, diesel has hit several minor peaks but not surged as it did from $3.039 in mid-October 2007 to the $4.764 per gallon all time record on July 14, 2008. In those nine months, diesel soared 57 percent.

Con-way Freight, TNT Expand Partnership

Trans-Atlantic service extended to U.S. exports to Europe

Con-way Freight and TNT are expanding their trans-Atlantic partnership to include shipping U.S. exports to Europe, targeting freight shipments weighing more than 150 pounds.

The companies have been transporting freight from Europe to the United States for a year, flying imports to New York's JFK International Airport and trucking them to customers.

The new offering will simply reverse direction and follow the same route, with Con-way picking up U.S. shipments and trucking them to JFK for consolidation and loading.

In Europe, logistics giant TNT will manage customs clearance at Liège Airport in Belgium and deliver shipments using its air and road distribution network.

Trailer Orders Spike 168 Percent

Strong demand points to tightening truckload capacity, ACT says

Cargo Thieves Go Online

Internet enables creative ways to pull off thefts

Criminal elements are becoming increasingly creative in using the internet to pull off cargo thefts throughout the supply chain, law enforcement detectives told a meeting of Harbor Truckers for a Sustainable Future in Long Beach.

Cargo thieves are using the internet to track shipments, book transportation with legitimate motor carriers, or, conversely, to set up bogus trucking operations that arrange cargo pick-ups for legitimate shippers and forwarders.

Even rival street gangs that are known for their involvement in the narcotics trade are cooperating with each other in cargo theft activities because stolen merchandise such as flat-screen TVs are easy to sell, and penalties if caught are not severe, said Chae Song, a detective with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Wal-Mart Targets Online Sales in Asia

E-commerce system near launch in China, Japan

Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, is preparing to launch e-commerce operations in China and Japan as part of a global effort to increase its online presence, the Financial Times reports.

The retailer already has 282 stores in China and 371 Seiyu stores in Japan but has no direct online sales in those countries.

It is now setting up systems for adapting its new centralized dot-com technology platform, under development during the past two years, to work in the two countries. A Walmart job advertisement for a "product localization manager" for Japan and China lists responsibilities that cover preparing for the launch of an e-commerce business, the Financial Times reported.

Ex-IBM exec pleads guilty in inside trading case
NEW YORK (AP) -- A former IBM senior executive pleaded guilty Monday to federal charges arising from what prosecutors call the largest insider trading case in hedge fund history.

Robert Moffat, 53, of Ridgefield, Conn., pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit securities fraud and securities fraud, charges which carry a potential penalty of 25 years in prison.

A plea agreement, though, contained language indicating he may end up serving six months in prison or less.

Advisory council members come from ports, carriers, state officials

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood tapped 10 leading analysts representing the freight industry, state highway agencies and academia to advise his Department on data it gathers.

The 10 are the new members of the Advisory Council on Transportation Statistics, which will aid the DOT's Bureau of Transportation Statistics. LaHood said "the new ACTS members will assist the department in coordinating data and statistics with our work on transportation systems for the future."

The group includes Robert Costello, chief economist at the American Trucking Associations, and John Gray, senior vice president for policy and economics at the Association of American Railroads.

NAFTA Trade Soared in January

Largest increase in 10 years as trade bounces back from recession’s low point

Trade using surface transportation between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement partners Canada and Mexico soared 19.5 percent from January 2009 to January 2010 in the largest increase in 10 years, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The surge is partly due to comparison with the lowest point of last year when the recession was in full swing. January 2010 was the second consecutive month of year-over-year growth after a whole year of falling comparisons, nearly all of it in double digits.

FedEx Express to Test Electric Trucks in LA

Parcel giant teams with Navistar to demonstrate all-electric technology

FedEx Express today unveiled plans to test its first all-electric parcel delivery vans, plugging two of four test trucks into its Los Angeles-area fleet in June.

The first two trucks will be built by Navistar in Indiana. Another pair of vehicles from a different manufacturer will be added to the Los Angeles fleet later in 2010.

Both sets of vehicles are designed with a range that allows many FedEx Express couriers to make a full eight-hour shift of deliveries before their vehicles need recharging.

Navistar and FedEx on Tuesday are rolling out a FedEx-branded prototype all-electric truck that launches a demonstration tour of the technology on Route 66 between Chicago and Los Angeles.

USPS Seeks One-Day Delivery Reduction

Cutting Saturdays to save $40 billion over 10 years

The U.S. Postal Service on Monday announced it would seek to reduce delivery service to five days a week as a means of cutting into a deficit that’s projected to reach $238 billion by 2020. Reducing deliveries by one day will save $40 billion over the next 10 years, said USPS Vice President Sam Pulcrano. Other cost savings will come through controlling employee health benefits, workforce reductions and price increases.

In a number of surveys, some two-thirds of businesses and residential customers supported the change to five-day delivery, Pulcrano said. Companies that use the mail on a large scale said it would take about six months to prepare for the change.

Under the plan, USPS will keep local post offices open, but mail tendered on Saturday will not be processed until Monday. Dean J. Granholm, vice president for delivery and post office operations, said that inter-city mail schedules shouldn’t be affected, since carriers will still be operating on two-day delivery times.

Nissan will sell electric car for just over $25K
NEW YORK (AP) -- Nissan's new electric car will cost just over $25,000 when it goes on sale in the U.S. in December, aiming to bring gasoline-free technology within reach of mainstream drivers.

The Leaf, a four-door hatchback, will have a base price of $32,780, but it's eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicles. That will make it cheaper to buy than electric vehicles coming from rivals and may force competitors to cut prices. But the Leaf's limited range of just 100 miles per charge for its lithium-ion battery could be a dealbreaker for some motorists.

"We want to make sure the car is affordable, ready for the mass market and has mass appeal," Mark Perry, director of product planning and advanced technology at Nissan North America Inc., said in an interview.
