Hey, ABFers! I'm starting to notice a ffew more Mack Visions out there on the roads now. Has ABF returned them to linehaul?

Mack Vision

Probably you are seeing the 2008 Macks. The 2008 order was for 164 Macks & 165 Sterlings. The Mack numbers start at 18001. They are all in service & many of the Sterlings are also in service.
If the numbers are 34_ _ _, then they are the 2004 ex road units that were put in the city but are being used by the utility drivers & sometimes at night for turns by the road.

From what I understand that the Macks are mostly Volvos, except for the bodys. The reason is that Mack engine wasn't ready to meet the new standards. But I could be wrong.

Mack/Volvo

The new Macks are indeed more Volvo than Mack. (Volvo owns Mack). The Mack engine engine wouldn't meet the new highway standards without a lot more addons & more EGR. Since 2007 highway Macks have had Volvo engines. Most of the 2001 Volvos have been sold or will be sold. There are still a few in city service but they will be sold next year. The company tries to sell tractors before they reach 800,000 miles. A used unit sells higher if they are not over that mileage.

I would rather have a 800k mile Volvo than a new Mack.

i like the new macks. they ride and driver better than the sterlings. the a.c. is a lot better then the sterlings. my only problem is they don't have engine brakes. here in the southwest and the guys in the northwest have alot of mountains to deal with. also these macks have no hold back when you gear down to go down a hill. i was told its because of the regeneration systems.

I have noticed on the 17&18 series Sterlings that have the regeneration on them you cant even tell you turned the engine brake on.

I think again the Mack team has failed us. The amateur engineering has had the 5th wheel moved back too far that the steer axle cannot get enough weight on it to stay on the road in winter driving conditions.

why can't ABF move the fifth wheel forward? by doing that, it may fix the weight problem but will also help with fuel mileage. by reducing the gap between the truck and trailer will reduce drag.

They were delivered properly positioned. The problem is trailer clearance, so they had to move the fifth wheels back 2 notches.

I wish they would get some Volvo tractors like the 11's. Even with the Volvo motor. Of course the vast majority of road drivers enjoyed driving those. So it would make no sense to get comfortable equipment to increase productivity and reduce back injuries.

oh i see......ya liked the volvo's too at roadway. but i like these macks too, as far as ride and being comfortable. the steering is a little too free though.

Truck dealer here sell Macks and KWs.Shop full of new Macks because of DPF system. We are told to save energy and keep the air clean.Hard to do both every device installed seems to make engines burn more fuel. But if they are in the shop they are doing both.:TR10driving03:

Yeah, I was just saying that those 11000 Volvos we had I really enjoyed driving. Good visibility, handled well in bad weather, roomy, comfortable. I haven't driven a good Mack since the old R model I drove in the 70's.

Yea thats when they built trucks.Mack still has the Mack motor. But the DPF crap is giving them trounle.

Mack Road Tractor Power

2007 & 2008 highway Macks have Volvo engines. Mack engines wouldn't meet the 2007 emission standards without a lot more EGR than the Volvo engines. The Volvo engine is more suited to regeneration than the Mack engines. The Mack engine is a good engine but it would take too much modification & add ons to meet the 2007 & later emission standards.
Yes, the DPF is an add on that requires maintenance.
The 2010 standards are even more strict than 2007-2009 standards.
