Just a pat on the back for all of us, we need it during these tough times.

What we take for granted and dont even think twice about might be unheard of if you worked at other LTL carriers.

At any given shift, a con-way dsr can do most if not all LTL job classifications. I remember when i first started and was on the extra board more or less around 3pm start.
i'd go in the city, then outbound, maybe hostle, linehaul to fac, then more cross-dock, then maybe some inbound dock work upon return to home terminal.

-Most con-way drivers can hook or break a set in under 10 minutes.
-Most con-way drivers have serious forklift skills.
-It's not uncommon seeing DSR's who hook to the kite with their lead and dolly (ie: back with the dolly)
-Also not uncommon is seeing the senior guys (or the really gifted) backing their sets to the dock, between other trailers, even long boxes.
-Waiting for an empty to load into and the hostler is taking too long? you can go out there yourself, your not a 1 function employee.

When i worked at yellow, their forklifts had sideswipes, then on year we got a few forklifts without sideswipes and everyone (who used them) was having trouble taking racks in and out of trailers, and loading those pallets that fit just right. ive never drove a forklift for con-way with a sideswipe.

it's not just a union thing, from what i read in the fedex boards, fedex drivers complain when the company introduces something that all us conway drivers have been doing the whole time. All linehaul DSR's work the dock, we barely have any meets or turns anymore, at saia and fedex and others it's mostly meet and turns and something under 200 miles you have to work the dock at fedex and they hate it!

Con-way has a bed reputation on the streets because ppl come and WORK here and hate it, were like the Marines, the few and the proud. It's not for everybody.

 to the almighty con-way DSR

hehehe

Just a little entertainment to divert from all the bad news in the industry

yea? or nea?

You hit the nail on the head with that one. Conway is loaded with great people. That's why it angers me with the way the almighty G.O is destroying this fine company. Way to go D. Miller, J. Libre and all the other flunky's! Love ya! Mean it!:horse:

:smilie_132:Backing a set to the dock, how many trys and they do it with no damage. I used to back triples before retireing.

Ok, if real men don't have to brag then how about us wives, girlfriends, SO's do it for ya'll??

I do think ConWay drivers are special, all of the work they do and rarely a word said about it. I've been to the jobsite while waiting on my husband and none were griping about loading, backing up, etc. Getting the job done.

And yep, I've seen a few (hubby included) that back up with trailer and dolly straight under the second trailer without a problem. Have at least 2 that can back pups and have done it (hubby included LOL! Ok, I'm a-bragging).

I've read on the board that if a man works for ConWay and leaves for any reason he has no problem getting a job elsewhere because the new company knows the man can do the job.

So for all the ConWay drivers:

Ok you had enough of that kool aid. It's nice your proud of hubby. I would like to see him and the other dude back in to dock.[By the way i was one of the first one's to pull doubles in Pennsllyania 1982 was the year. {when some of the young guys on this board were pooping yellow in their diapers}so i know what they do but i could never back dolly in to the rear pup.Idon;t know if they call them dollys any more or not:

There was a time when CNW knew all the above and
thusly treated their employees right due to that.

As for hooking up a tail with a trailer and dolly, Just for your information, CF would fire you if you were caught doing that. So I can't believe they let you do that. It is unsafe

Man I will be the honest one here...I did not have enough talent to do it when I worked for Con-Way. To all those who like to complain all the time..try this from the unemployed side of the fence and then tell me how much you hate your job!

We have a crapload of outstanding drivers that are always willing to do a little extra! But it is just like a dog, when you get kicked one too many times, you don't come back wagging your tail anymore! Management has destroyed everyones' desire to do no more than what they must while keeping the LOI/TERMINATION monster off of their backs!!! Make your empolyees feel good about their job, show thanks when due, do not micro-manage, be honest! Do all of the above and people will put out 110% without question! I guess the current company philosophy is to keep kicking while you're down!!!!!!!!!!

Our leaders are stuck in the post WWII mangement philosophy where everyone employed here is relegated to serfdom. This begs the all encompassing question...why?

You hit the nail straight and true with this one. This shadow of the hammer constantly hanging over head accomplishes zilch toward motivating your employees. It takes the desire of wanting tp do the best you can and puts in square in the can.

There are those who will go above and beyond regardless of the conditions simply because that is what they are. It is their work ethic to do their very best in spite of the way they are treated. We have alot of those kinds at Con-Way. It seems they are the ones who stayed and decided to make a career at CNW.

Their days are numbered though. They won't be around forever and a new and younger generation with a different mindset is on the rise. Con-Way is going to be screwed in the future trying to hire and retain people if they continue with their antiquated management style.

I just read in another post where Bill C. decided no more CC days and no more PTO days without 24 hrs. notice. Now what is the typical DSR or CSR supposed to do in an emergency? What are we supposed to do when our kids are in the hospital all night long? What are we supposed to do when something fails in our home?

Perhaps Bill C. has minions at his beck and call to take care of these unforeseen difficulties. I don't have and cannot afford that luxury. If there is a problem with abuse then deal with it on an idividual basis and forego the junior high school management mentality where one size (rule) fits every situation. Its insulting!!!

I get the feeling some of our leaders think we are too dumb to be dissatisfied. I am here to bust their bubble...guess what?!??...we aren't too dumb to be dissatisfied Mr. Person In Charge and the dissatisfaction is growing at a much faster rate than you realize.

If it weren't for the pay and benefits, the only sound at any SC on any given day would be the repetitious drone of crickets and the chirping of the birds that feed on them (hows that for waxing eloquent, huh?).

The shine of the pay and benefits package has dulled considerably. I have no life as it is defined in the realm of the average worker. I realize it is part of the job and its what I signed up for and fully understood it when I came to work here. We work bizarre BS hours and schedules. Con-Way leadership seems to have forgetten (or doesn't care) in their arrogance that their employees are human...we are not robots to be turned off and on at will.

I have sank to the level of seriously wanting out. (Please spare me the "then just quit comments"). I like my job. I enjoy the interaction with the customers and my fellow workers. I don't hate to go to work. I want Con-Way to survive and prosper.

But something has to give. The stupidity that has come down from the glass house in the last few years is stunning to say the least. And with the economy the way it is things don't look too promising towards a reversal in these people's mindset. So for the time being I and others must suffer through the mind numbing genious of our leadership.

My children are almost grown and it won't be long until they leave the nest. I am a single parent. My personal requirements are few and simple. It was the way I was raised in case you are wondering as to the reason.

If things remain the same in the next few years I will be gone. My motivation to work for this company is all but gone sad to say. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would come to this conclusion. I am simply here for the above mentioned pay and benfefits. When they are no longer required then it will time to move on.

By the by...I ran a day lane just recently to a very large facility. Many day lanes in and out of this facility all during the day...guess what??...not 95 Ford in sight (except for mine!!!...now who is BSing who???)

Rat :loser:

What's unsafe about backing a pup with a dolly on it? By the way I've seen a certain USM driver back his set to the dock every night and he did it fast like it was a straigh box. That boy has skills

man you guys are getting all worked up, i was just trying to show some appreciation for con-way drivers. I understand theres a lot of changes going on. Regardless if we get paid less, equal or more than our competitors, we shure do more.
