Yellow | Un-jiffing (for the Yellow drivers)

A yes the joys of jiffing up in the winter, wait until the 5th wheel rails dont match up or the special joy that one of the new tracters with air ride that are jiffable can bring:hissyfit:

No , I will not get covered with grease messing around with some stupid jiff thingy. I will just tell the dispatcher "Sorry Charlie , I don't/won't know how " ! Thats is what 3 axle tractors and sliding 5th wheels are for.

Believe me you will get your chance to jiff up a tractor. Remember all of the tractors will be used in the YRC system. You might drive a YRC -Yellow tractor one trip. You might drive a YRC-Roadway tractor on the next trip. There is no way around it. As for you telling dispatch ,that I don't know how ****, it does'nt work ! They are giving Jiff-up classes at the Yellow terminal here in Memphis,Tn. You will know how to jiff up like a champion by the time this deal is done. Some good advice ,don't wear your best clothing until you learn how to jiff without getting 5th wheel grease all over you. I would even suggest buying a apron. It really helps to keep the grease off of you, especially when its raining. That you tube video is like jiffing up in a perfect environment. That guy was on even pavement, plenty of light and it was not raining or snow covered. Just wait until you have to do it at a satelite terminal on a gravel lot with pot holes in it.How about an uneven lot or a lot on a hill and that jiff starts to roll on you. How about you trying to line the tractor and the jiff up to lock the pintle hook to the the tractor . I'll bet 100.00 that it will take some of these guys 2-4 hours fooling around with that jiff on the first go by yourselves. My advice is to take your time and don't let the jiff-loc system frustrate you. When you get mad and frustrated ,thats when that thing will hurt or kill you. Places were you will likely jiff would be a customer, satelite terminal or the railhead. Just take your time and get paid for it,no matter how long it takes. I had to call breakdown before to pull the first 5th wheel back because the dummies did'nt have a jiff bar at a customer. A small wrecker came out to winch the 5th wheel back on the frame up in Union City ,Tn. Sometimes the frame might get bent. You will have to place a piece of wood under one of the tires to make the tractor frame and jiff frame line up to slide the 5th wheel on or off. Oh yeah, please remember to put in the safety pin, all 8 of the of the 5th wheel lock pins on the rear 5th wheel and as many 5th wheel loch pins on the 1st 5th wheel. Never pull a trailer on the jiff when it is jiffed up to a tractor. The entire assembly might fail and disengage from the tractor causing you to lose the jiff and the trailor. I am kind of joking around but at the same time I'm just letting you know how serious this is. These things can hurt you or somebody on the road if you do not do it properly. If you ever have a question stop and call somebody. If I ever see somebody that needs help I will help them jiff or un jiff out in the field. Guys I hate and always did hate the jiff loc system. It is dangerous and should have been banded a long time ago. We do not have any more new tractors made with the jiff system. They are slowly getting rid of the older tractors with jiff-locs systems. We do still have thousands of 804,814,824 Volvo,839,849 Sterling 829 International tracors in service that are able to be jiffed up. The only way you will not jiff up if you just go ahead a retire before March 1. I know we all hate change but just get your mind right and get ready to tackle this **** head on. Good luck to the Yellow -YRC drivers thats dealing with this equipment change.

Shorty knows how dangerous this process can be. Toes have been cut off and ankles broken by dropped a jifflox. Also look out for worn parts on tractor guide ramp and pintle hook as the whole thing could pull loose on the highway . Lots of finger pinch points and slip and falls as well. No kidding all this stuff has happened. Protect yourself at all times.

Thanks for the video. First time I've seen someone remove the mud flap to jiff. I also like this cartoon, check it out. DS.

I especially like the panel where it says " pull 5th wheel back till it hits the stops" :biglaugh:.. I used to work at Roadway here in Charleston, and we couldn't get a forklift into the yard (no ramp), so we had to help a road driver lift the fifth wheel back up onto the jiff manually more than once... Either they won't move, or they shoot off and hit the ground... The first time I had to jiff up, I was 50 miles from home, and hadn't been trained... All I can say to the guys doing this for the first time is take your time, and be careful... Good luck...

Hey pullin, how bout a video on how to pick up a fallen jiff, not by hand but using only the tractor.

Nose gear has collapsed & tongue on ground. Make sure jiff has air, set jiff brakes, back tractor ( 45 degree angle) duals against jiff duals & very gently back until you squish tires together & they start turning backwards which in turn brings the nose up, set tractor brake, make sure nose gear comes down, you may have to help it, release brake & gently let the tractor move forward & nose come down.

If the 5th wheel is in working order, all 4 wheels are in good shape, then it is not hard to push it back by hand, just time consuming, (push on one side a few inches then walk to other side and repeat) but much faster and cheaper than calling a vendor. You're getting paid for your time.

Oh yeah, please remember to put in the safety pin, all 8 of the of the 5th wheel lock pins on the rear 5th wheel and as many 5th wheel loch pins on the 1st 5th wheel.

Unused 5th wheel just needs 1 locking pin on each side as long as pins are connected by wire to the 5th wheel frame. This will make it easier for the next guy. Just my difference of opinion with Shorty.

FYI- Good way to get fired... A guy from MA. almost did for posting stupid things like this with company equipment in it.
P.S. this is the easy part... try adding the jiff, in the winter, on uneaven pavement, with no air in it and no chock block... 10-4?

If it don't have air, then do it to it! By the way, been there, done that! Sure glad That's All in My PAST!!!!!!

apples and oranges

There is an art to it, the main thing is to prep it and take your time. Love those cold snowy/icy night when doing a conversion from a big box to a set reaching underneath trying to pull the 5th wheel release handle and it won't budge cause of the ice build up........ just the start for a long night......Yeah Baby!!!!!! :biglaugh:

I'd rather deal with a jif than those M-1 tank dolly yellow has. Those are some real ball busters the onlty thing good on them is the swivel wheel.

What did I do that was stupid???? I did everything as I always do, in a very safe manner. All I did was speed up the video playback and add funny music. I had gloves on, and used the proper sliding tool. I wasn't putting the company in a bad light in anyway, I don't even think you can tell by the video who's name is on the tractor. Everybody relax, times are stressfull as it is, can't we do SOME things to brighten up the mood around here??? What happened to enjoying your job and having a fun day at work???

Triples I wouldn't sweat it cause at least you we're proactive instead of reactive. Makes you wonder ??? Damn you if you do and damn you if you don't..... Especially in this slow period of year it would be a good time to start mending the fences for training like this.
