FedEx Freight | Question About Hiring

A few years ago, the Cincinnati (Fairfield) location had an ad for Road Driver in the local paper. I applied, interviewed, and was given a tour of the place. The SCM took me in his office and said he wanted to offer me the job...of City Driver. I asked why City when the ad was for Road? He explained that he hired Road qualified drivers to fill City positions, but that open Road spots were filled from the City board. I tried to explain to him that was misleading and he should re-phrase the ad. I got no where.
I didn't have a problem with the practice of filling Road positions from the City board, I had a problem with the ad/SM leading me to believe that I was being considered for a Road spot right out of the gate.

Before this year I'd never thought it possible but my barn and the barn down the street some 70 odd miles both hired road right off the street and they work nearly ever night. Who woulda thunk it

I should note that one of them are slated to lose their job January 31st due to the friendly merger

you would have notthing to worry about this merger is different then yrc's and we have a penison, 401k, and medical that are out standing start rate is .4864 and 20.30 an hour come over we have a bunch of you guys all ready is a great place to work! i wouldn't lie i have 7 years between cf and roadway so some of these guys who complain have know idea how good they have have it here.

Wipe the kool aid off your chin.

Being good at driving a forklift and loading trailers is a definite plus to become a road driver. Who knows, you might even get a shuttle run that lets you drive more than 50 miles!

I've done the same guardrail. My input is it all depends on your barn. I have a good crew that runs KCY so I am for the most part happy. Now I also have made more and worked less. I knew comming here to KCY that a road job don't happen and I will bust butt for a few years and gravy will trickle down from time to time. Starting out at FedEx at the bottom of the city board stinks but if a guy can get on at a small barn that's unaffected by the merger and start on the road I would say your looking at a good thing. What do I know though I bust butt breaking freight with a road run here and there

I didn't know you were in KC.

So, where did you come from, and how long ago. And what do you think of this town?

i'm not sayin this is the greatest job in the world and there isn't one but it's not that bad but i keep my mouth shut and i don't talk to ANYONE and i just do my job and i never get messed with i guess thats why i'm not so bitter!

Johnnyr, For starters, I am not in management but I heard a couple of years ago when word that YRC was having trouble that the word came down from the top NOT to even give a job app to anyone that had been working for YRC. I don't know if that has changed, it would be my guess it has not, knowing how they feel about the union over here. You could always try to put your app in and see what happens, if you get a interview you could get your questions answered then and decide what is best for you. Good Luck in whatever you decide.
