rowdy that is a very interesting observation,that this Semi Trailer (WAS) 13'4" before the driver hit the bridge.
 
OMG this reminds me of when I was working at a tractor paint company and one of our rig drivers thought he could make it under an overpass. Nope. He could've been seriously hurt but came out unscathed.
 
Hilarious. Maybe he would have fit if only he had let the air out of his seat. Ooops! Some people are beyond help, and i'm sure there is a nice safe cubicle job for this dolt out there somewhere.
 
They used to let the air out of their tires in Salamanca,NY where I grew up, and back out. But NY always lied by a foot on their bridges, so drivers would crawl under the one on Route 17 and sometimes make it! That was years ago when trailers were 12 foot 6 high!
 
well i live by this bridge we get at least 3 stupid people who cant read hit this bridge a year had a swift truck get stuck last mouth and yes its well marked and signs are posted
 
Gee dockboy if your town has so many Semi's hitting that bridge,why wouldn't your DOT shave down the road surface to allow higher trailers to make it under?

There is a bridge in my area that had a lot of Semi's wrecking because of the height issue,and they did shave down the road to accommodate up to 14 foot from 11'6".

i didnt think about that but that would solve alot of probs like this.
 
thats funny daaaa you gotta be carefull of the signs , NYC on the BQE the sign 11'6 but its more than 13;6 my first time 0n that highway i almost ::shit:: till i saw a larg car drive write under it WOW
 
Yup you are correct,if there was a sign that said 12'6" the overpass was at least 13'6",however it could be a bit higher.
We city drivers knew the ones we could get under in our areas,by trial,and error,or by word of mouth from other drivers.
 
First time in NYC. i saw that sign on one of the interstates. Got onto Atlantic Blvd. A JB Hunt gave me directions to get back toward Maspeth. After he turned off, I saw a bridge with 12'6. I stopped and waited. It was early morning, so no traffic yet. I started to back down when a Swift barrelled up the bridge, waving me on. He made it, and so did I. I will be eternally gratefull for the 2 drivers who helped me that day. BTW, made my appointment on time.
 
Genius was most likely going on G.P.S. and couldn't read what he didn't have: a Trucker Atlas or MAP WITH A LIST OF DESIGNATED LOW BRIDGES, or another Driver just wanted to see some carnage since "It wasn't his truck".

Even as stated, Low Bridges not being always as specified by signage, a 11' Bridge would only therefore be 12', if such were the case and maybe it could well be 10'.

I've found some interesting Heights of Overpasses in Jersey alone and in PA. only on Rt. 30, yet usually BEFORE I got too bloody close.

Personally I LIKE WHEN DRIVERS COMPRESS TRAILERS (and some Tractors) as IT JUST PROVES THEIR INCOMPETENCE!!
