FedEx posts bigger loss, issues gloomy outlook
FedEx sees "extremely difficult" quarters ahead, after posting bigger 4th-quarter loss
NEW YORK (AP) -- FedEx Corp. on Wednesday warned it expects earnings well below analysts' views in the next quarter, after it posted a bigger fiscal fourth-quarter loss due to hefty one-time charges.
"The operating environment for our first two quarters in fiscal 2010 is expected to be extremely difficult," executive vice president and chief financial officer Alan B. Graf Jr. said.
Graf said that still-sluggish manufacturing activity and another run-up in fuel prices will hinder earnings in the near future. But he also expects that FedEx's performance will begin to improve in the last two fiscal quarters of 2010 as cost-cutting measures start to "gain traction."

FedEx posts wider quarterly loss; adjusted net tops forecast
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- FedEx Corp. on Wednesday reported a wider fourth-quarter net loss, hurt by charges related to acquisitions and restructuring moves, and gave a first-quarter forecast that fell short of Wall Street's expectations.
The company's shares have lost 40% of their value in the past year and are down 20% since the beginning of 2009. In premarket trading, the stock fell about 2% to $50.27.
"The operating environment for our first two quarters in fiscal 2010 is expected to be extremely difficult," said Alan Graf, FedEx's chief financial officer.

FedEx as a whole- made money for the fiscal year, we had a net Income, sure its not what we all would like, the Freight segment lost money but it was also saddled with the goodwill charges for the FXNL acquisition.

Freight and National moved on average 74,369 bills per day during the last fiscal year. YRC, the largest LTL carrier the world has ever known, moved 103,090 bills per day.

Most of us on here are gainfully employed and working for a company thats not having financial troubles.

The governement is what it is. People elected Obama because they were voting against Bush's party. In my opinion, one of the worst reasons to vote for someone. Its fine though, the economy tanking further and further will seal the fate of the left politically in the next election.
I know you may think I am up in the night but the earnings reported need to be taken in context with what the economy and our industry is doing right now. What carrier out there is posting awesome numbers right now? UPS is gaining market share in the LTL but not making money off of it because they are moving freight basically for free as long as people ship parcels with them. Estes seems to be doing well, they always have new trucks, their terminals are busy, and they are buying up YRC properties, but they arent publicly traded so nobody really knows how well they are doing. Conway is expanding its service offerings but not posting good numbers. ABF is hurting and Old Dominion is still status quo. The key to what is driving this industry now is the fact that YRC is hemorrhaging customers and money and thats feeding all other carriers like a drip IV.

A while back, Bill Zollars reacted to a question saying that the industry right now reacting to YRC like sharks with blood in the water. The rotting corpse of the whale is feeding the frenzied sharks in the water and I for one would rather be a shark than the whale.

Each of you have something in your life that you look forward to everyday. I know I go home to little girl with a smile from ear to ear and a big hug to give me. Things could be much worse. The industry as a whole is down and while that makes for a gloomy outlook, pardon the term but; Relax, its FedEx. We have been gaining market share and we are a profitable company.

Fed Ex has one big problem, its Fred Smith fighting Congress something no one should do. The results are going to bite him in the ***. What he is so afriad of? Also what is going to happen when Fed Ex Freight and Fed Ex National merge, there are going to be big problems there. Dosent it work like this at Fed Ex, ok your working I like the shirt you have on,
ok your not working dont like your shoes. What gives one guy the opportunity to work while the other one gets fired?

Isnt at Fed Ex they dont need a reason to fire you?

Fred Smith and Congress who do you think is going to win there?:Flame-On:

Who said anything about Freight and National merging? They are completely different services, operations, and networks. Thats like saying Express and Ground will be merging.
If you get fired and its because of nothing you did, you can file a lawsuit. If I get fired, I will know its because I knowingly did something wrong.
Your premise that Fred Smith is going up against congress is nonsense. FedEx is fighting legislation and corporations do that all the time. Dont confuse things. Will FedEx win? Who knows? I have beer, bullets and a freezer full of mozzerella sticks so I'm not worried about anything for right now.

Go Fred! after reading a pretty complete history of Fedex pushing for and winning legislation, I have faith that we can prevail again, and we should.

Also.....I cannot imagine that Freight and Nat'l would not be merging, eventually. We already have combined sales, websites, diversity councils, uniforms (almost), shop arangements, identical training programs (almost).

Once all centers are on ACCOPS the different services and networks are a matter of programming the freight to the correct door and dispatching the trailer to the correct corridor. We did this at Federal Express without much trouble back in '88-'90 when we introduced 'heavyweight' (skids on an airplane) freight.

How True........And dont forget... before this Portable Pension Plan was put in place....Ole Fred courted G.W. ,the Senate, & Congress for about 5 years to get it his way...

It's part of The New World Order...the UBBA Rich.... control the Government.....

It was delayed, delayed, and delayed......All under the guise that they didn't want another ENRON to happen....

He was his own 1 man lobbyist crew...He must have really spread it around.....and boy did he get it his way...

They could have put in a retro clause....to give us something for time served....

But no thats not what he wanted.....

That meant 10 years for me...that dosen't reflect in the pension....Thanks Fred

I honestly see much of the portions merging but I see the value of having two seperate operations. The whole accops thing is a godsend for me. You dont know how many times I would hear from a customer,"Where is my pallet?" I would have to go to the public website for national, plug in the pro# and tell them what I saw on the website and act like I had some sort of internal view to their shipments when I didnt! ACCOPS is really helping me out. I envision the whole thing being a lot like Express and Ground. Freight is a better product and service(no offense to FXNL) just like Express is a better product and service than Ground. But the key is to have both offerings so that the customer has a choice based on price and service levels. Because of that, I dont see the National operation going anywhere. What could possibly happen is that it all goes under a FedEx LTL name and have service levels of Regional(FXFW, FXFE), Super Regional(EZ Flyer), and Long Haul(FXNL). Supermassive Service centers with both operations could also happen but the two services should remain as they are. I know that making FXNL more like FXF is happening but its because for a lot of the non-operations type stuff that I deal with, having people on the same page just makes the customer's experience better.
