I am a line driver for Fedex Freight. As you know we are now going through the same changes you did several years ago. Lots of unhappy campers over here. Professioinal line drivers are now dock workers. All the work in So. Cal is now going to Devore. The rest of us are left out in the cold. My question is do you have one seniorty board for local and one for line or are you all on one board. This way I'll know what to expect. We're building a terminal in Kettleman city right now, I guess Blyth is next on the list. Thanks for the information. Twice Pipes

now granted it's been a couple years since i left con-way, so some of the nit-pick details may have changed, but con-way runs one seniority board all the way through the terminal... line-haul, p&d and dock. once a year (sometimes more depending on the upper echelon and their moods) you bid where you want to go, either am line-haul, pm line-haul or a scheduled start time which will set you either at dock or city. your overall seniority with that barn will determine what you get for your bid. Hope this helps :)

we have terminals in kettleman and blythe already. Do you mean to tell me that fedex is playing follow the leader with conway and fedex is not the leader.

to answer your question, we have one seniority board. And currently how it works is at the beginning of the year you will have 3 choices linehaul (am or pm) city or extraboard.

you put a 1 beside the one you want most, a 2 by your next choice and a 3 by the one you want the least. Depending on your seniority and number of bids, you will get what comes to you in that order. When a new bid opens up or bids close, they will refer to that list to find out where you want to go. This is for the whole year so you cant change your mind, say be linehaul until may then then go to city till october then go back on linehaul (provided bids opened) like in the past.

you dont wanna work in blythe. Is 90 degrees at night and all the forklifts are on. Think about it.

Like everyone said, one board and you can bid anything once a year. Here is an example of what I think you're asking. When we had lay-offs back in January the overall number of bids were cut. AM and PM line were the two areas cut. Those drivers fell into the next choice they could hold. The bottom AM line drivers went to nights and generally had a lot of seniority on PM line, the PM guys went onto the extra board, myself included, because city is hard to get here now. One or two guys bumped into the city but that was it. Once they brought the drivers back we all made it back to our bids.

Sorry to hear about the changes over at FedEx. Hope all you guys can hang in there or find suitable employment elsewhere.

TP, not to mind your business but then I am a woman... LOL!!

I'd think TWICE and maybe THREE times before leaving. Jobs are so scarce, being on bottom of another company and the loss of jobs daily is out there for you at this time. If a company you hire on at has to do some trimming, you'll be one of the first to go.

Hang in for a while to see how things are going then make a decision.

Remember, whatever job you have there'll be ::shit:: or someone :eck13: on that job also.

Maybe take up a fun hobby to let off stream. I have a riding lawnmower for my hubby and he has to put the belt on it all of the time. It helps him let off the steam. Needless to say the lawnmower don't look as good as it once did.... :Flame-On: and I think the back 40 (that doesn't belong to us) has been mowed?? It's missing some pretty darn big saplings back there and I'm still looking for our first weedeater!! :biglaugh: I did find a giant hachet??

Let me add that if your health is suffering then I would find another job, not worth it to stay, just be sure to have your ducks in a row (money wise) so you can make the transition without a hitch.

i would only switch if you find a conway terminal who is expanding then you will be set. or a new terminal that is hiring more.

going in at one that is not will get real slow in winter. conway over hires to cover summer vacations.

i switched from conway to another and am only safe because expansion. if i was at another terminal i would be laid off right now. guys with 15 years gone in some places but im ok being new guy. so if your willing to move to find that spot i would do it. if not you will suffer this winter.

Thanks for all your help. I don't have any plans on changing jobs, since I've been with Fedex Freight for 33 years. We have acquired some of con-ways upper management team. By the way you can have them back if you want them. We are playing follow the leader. We've went from mostly lay down runs to almost all turns. We have one driver in Anaheim who has 34 years seniority. 15 years on local and 19 years on line. Right now we have a two seniority board system, so Tim is below me because all my seniority is on line. We are building a new terminal in Kettleman city, so I figure blythe will be next.. Now to worry I have no plans on transferring to Blythe. They are busy right now transferring drivers to accomodate the turns. We are supposed to have one more big change the first of next year. I thought it might be a one board system. I've just got a couple more years to go to retirement, but you know how us old farts worry about the small stuff. Talked to Conway George last week. He's running the northwest. George says hi to all the troops. Take care TP

33 and 34 years senority, arkansas freightways didnt start-up till the mid eighties am i missing something here

I didn't work for AF I started with Viking Freight in Los Alamitos in 1976, then we built the Anaheim terminal 1978 and I've been there ever since. Not sure where the kettleman city is located. It's scheduled to open in the spring of 2010. I believe its Mike Moss we've acquired from Con-Way TP
