Chemicals burn, closing southbound lanes for 19 hours; feds plan inquiry

well i see a load bar in that photo and the article says that one of the brakes on the trailer might have failed, sparked, and caught the trailer on fire. how much you wanna bet it was a moto cargo trailer? atleast the driver it okay and was able to unhook his trailers.

From the looks of the second photo, and video you have posted Dockworker.
this looks to be a van,not a set,as you can see it is a bit short for a set,as well as the open barn doors on the tail.
What do you think?

UPS Freight Truckload Division.

Said something in the article about a "kenwood" tractor.

I assume they meant Kenworth, That would mean it was an Owner Operator, since UPS dosen't have Kenworths.

Lots of freight goin into Miami not much goin out.

Glad the driver is OK.!

It was a contractor pulling that trailer from Gaffney to WPB. 56 bills on trailer for WPB. Word is the trailer brakes caught on fire.

That's going to open Pandora's Box!!!!
Open it up baby, contractors should not be pulling our freight, TOO many road drivers on layoff!!!! Company drivers will stop and check their tires every 100 miles, contractors have to get the freight there ASAP no time to stop for safety checks.:nutkick:

we had a contractor from slc to spo get shut down at the washington POE at liberty lake about 2 weeks ago,he was out of hours. the trailer had hazmat on it, the contactor co. sent another driver to move the load to terminal, but the driver didnt have a hazmat endorsement .i wonder how many of these contractors are hauling hazmat without an endorsement.

There is absolutely no telling how many of these guys are unqualified to do this job . Putting the safety of the traveling public at risk .(Including your family and mine) But hey as long as UPS makes a dollar right? :TR10driving03: This is A disgrace.

Either Co or Contractor the job is to get the freight there ASAP and as safely as possible. It's hard to believe that the majority of Company drivers actually do a tire check every 100 miles.

This statement has no merit whatsoever.

I am a company driver and I Do Not Stop and check the tires every 100 miles....nor is it required to do so.

I do not know of anyone else who does either....

The ones who say they are going to stop and kick a tire don't count because most likely they are stopping to pee and using trucker lingo... rather than performing any safety related tasks.:biglaugh:

To say that contractors don't have time to stop doesn't hold water either.

I am trying to be a smartazz but anytime you haul hazmats you are required by DOT to stop every 100 miles and check the tires......

Actually they changed it. You are no longer required to stop every 100 miles.

397.17 Tires. (a) A driver must examine each tire on a motor vehicle at the beginning of each trip and each time the vehicle is parked.

The second part of that "and each time the vehicle is parked" would require you to check if you stop for any reason... but does not require you to stop.

This would not have happened if UPS Freight stop being cheap and make the shop go back to inspecting the equipment when you come in the gate at a terminal.
