I have not heard any new rumors about UPS buying ABF since you posted this rumor 2 years ago.
........but, I have it from a good source its a done deal. The announcement will come June 19th that UPS has purchased the largest, stand alone union carrier left in these great states.

I'm sorry 251 but I couldn't resist throwing that in.

But the more I think about it, the idea of UPS buying ABF might just be a real shot in the arm for the Teamsters union. It would make UPS even more powerful and probably put a lot more pressure on FedEx & ConWay. It would probably help in the IBT's efforts to organize both companies. Go Teamsters!!!

What if

Teamster251, you have my head spinning with what ifs. I started reading that old thread of yours and found this post
In the june edition of ABF by-lines in response to the question of UPS buying ABF, the president stated that "In my opinion, the most likely scenario, by far, is that ABF will continue to compete independently and effectively against large, diversified companies like UPS, FedEx and eventually DHL"

So if he says it probably won't happen, then Teamster251 is probably right & UPS will probably buy ABF

Maybe its time for DHL to jump back into the US market and buy YRC

Just some random thoughts.

If they did buy ABF what would happen to your current contracts?
UPSF has a totally different contract then Parcel and Feeder drivers.
Do you think this will be the start of the "Death of the LTL NMFA contract"?

The NMFA contract for the most part is already DEAD :TR10driving03::TR10driving03:

The MNFA(sorry all my fellow Teamsters) is a dinosaur. UPS would never agree to work under such a contract. Hell, the managers at UPS freight can't stand our contract.(Which by the way is looking better and better everyday, for all those who mocked it at the beginning.)

ABF Teamsters would have to vote out of that contract for UPS to purchase them.

Why?

This doesn't make any sense at all!

ABF is 100% Freight...

Nothing to do with pkg.

And quit frankly wouldn't affect pkg. what so ever...

________________________________

Now from a UPS Freight perspective...

This would have devastating affects!

Because a < purchase > of another unionized carrier would require Us to be < Dovetailed > together...

Just like when ABF purchased Carolina.

I don't believe that either side wants to go through this process...

Now if it were possible to purchase ABF - without dovetailing the workforce...

This < would > be a Great Acquisition!

ABF is a Great Company!

Structurally Sound and Well Run - Top to Bottom!

First off I know I posted that same idea over two years ago but at the time it was a valid rumor. And it is again. The Packahge car driver that called me and told me abouyt it would have know reason to lie. He was just passing on news which he thought I would like (seeing I was a freight guy)

Second, legally all current contracts would stay intact until expired.

Third, last I knew ABF was not in the NMFA anymore. And why would they have to vote out of their contract to be purchased? That doesn't make any sense.

Fourth, it does make sense, Why does Fedex have two freight carriers? and never assume that dovetailing is the ultimate answer. Endtailing does happen to in a buyout. IE Valerie when purchesd by RedStar and CBL when purchaed by Red Star. I all depends on language and what the IBT decides.

Lastly I'm not here to specualte I was just looking for some answers or rumors as to such from other ABFers if thye may have heard something on Friday.

we are still in the nmfa and why don't you provide some kind of link for this rumor?

My mistake on the nmfa. I could have sworn they pulled out last contract becauase YRC dominated with all the companies under thier umbrella. Could have sworned they negoiated on their own.

Anyway if I had a link to the supervisors meeting I would have posted it but that doesn't exist. Besides if there was link to this it wouldn't be a rumor now would it.

I know it's just a rumor. But I think it would be the best choise UPS could make it they really wanted to buy another carrier. But then again they would have to do like YRC is doing now. Closing terminals and selling terminals. But then we are just the grunts what do we know.:biglaugh:
