Is any one being forced to back there car into there parking spot?

This is supposed to be safer then pulling into it and backing out at the end of the day.

How far do we let this safety stuff go?

We are not on the clock, it is my car, etc. etc.

This has nothing to do with hauling freight from point A to B.

I am not upset, just wondering if the company is goin to far?

I pull my car in most of the time out of habit and the TM has approched me twice telling me to back my car in......

Safety man tells me they can red card us for not backing in are cars.

Are they really goin to fire me for not backing my car in!!!!

I have not heard of this yet, I am a road driver and my morning is the evening. Does this mean I have to pull my car in and back out in the morning?? Play the game after all its all about safety....:biglaugh: and its company property.

I've haven't heard anything either.
Most of our guys park their cars by backing in to their spots.

I was told the memo for this new procedure was sent out the WEEK I was on Vacation back in April but no one bothered to tell me until Just last week......It is amazing that the SCM was driving in up to three weeks ago....So I was not the only one to miss the memo... I have talked to other drivers and they don't remember the memo either....Our line drivers are allowed to park inside the property gate for safety of their vehicles when they are on their run.......They all seem to pull in and NOT back in.... Oh well, it must be important or UPS would not spend so much time worrying about it.

Going too Far?...UPS?.... Your joking right?

These are the same idiots that think ...
...you are more visible with 4-ways on.
...you need a seat belt to move a truck an inch in the parking lot.
...you should blow the horn every time you back up...causing people to "not" pay attention when a horn blows.
...we are more visible with our vests on, while Brown drivers that come in our yards are not held to the same standard and do not need vests(I guess the all brown stands out better than our brown and gray clown suits).

Backing in when parking does actually make safety sense.:TR10driving03:

Why back in a spot there's no line's to mark a spot. We have to make your own spot pothole's you can break a ankle in. No lighting that's a joke.

I don't believe these new policy's really had anything to do with safety. These new policy's came out just after an employee was run over and killed by a yard horse. UPS struck a deal in order to keep Insurance costs down after this tragic accident. The underlying cause of any policy that UPS makes, Is the money.

I always back in when I get to work. That way when I get in in the morning its alot easier to pull out since we share a yard with other companies and lots of times there are inbound trailers from three different carriers just parked anywhere.

in gaffney we've been backing in for a year and you better blow you're horn too. this is for the people who drive inside the yard. all traffic is treated the same. on all package yards, there are no privately owned vehicles allowed inside the fence where brown cars are, everybody walks in

Thanks for the replys.

Sounds like this memo has not made it every were yet.

Most employees are taking the 'oh well I'll just do it' approach in GDR.

I just thought I started being controled by UPS when I punched in.

All the other safety stuff is part of our daily work duties, They DO make it safer to move freight. Over the last couple years I have become a safer driver. At first these 'new' safety procedures seem different and hard to get used to but after you do them for a while they become habit. They are making GDR safer at least, less accidents and injurys.

As a side note we have a seperate employee parking lot.......NOBODY is allowed in the terminal gate. UPS freight trucks, trailers, and cars ONLY!

Van Man, Red Card? It is not part of our contract, so therefore is not acknowleged by our Union. Ask your BA. Up here, we nipped that one in the butt when it first came out last year. Also you are not on the clock. Period

I backed in last night and I took two parking spaces just to be safe. I also put some orange cones around the two parking spots so everyone knows, those two spots are mine.

Thanks for the encouragment.

I was told by a safety man today that soon I will start recieveing red cards.

My name came up in a safety meeting as being a problem in this area.

They said I can walk to work and park any way I feel, but since I am on company property I WILL back in.

I cant believe this....!!!

Honestly most of the time I just forget.

Amazing that your company trusts you w/tractor trailer combos but fears your ability to back out of a parking space after you leave said truck.

Hope the policy works out for all of you as you wish Brothers.

i do not back in, the number one rule in the ups six steps to backing is (back only when necessary) it is not necessary to back in when i get to work.alot of times when i get back at nite i can drive out without backing. if backing in is such a good ideal we need to tell walmart, i am sure they would like to have a safer parking lot.
