Anybody ever seen or talked to a DSR who became FOS?
As far as starting pay, is there any considerations of what he made when he was a driver? Any other information as far as vacation or benefits if its any different would be appreciated. i know they get a bigger ICP?

It's for a friend...

my only advice is if they do decide to change do it early...before he or she reaches top scale. After that it is a lot harder to take the pay hit. 1000 to 1050 is ball park top end fos for a converted driver on a 50 hr week, and prob not near that off the street. You can do the math from there...but if you want to raise the ceiling on your pay and can afford to loose on the front end for about three to four years before you get back to top driver pay, (and that would have to be through promotions not in raises)and feel confident that you can transition well enough to merit the fast track it would take to get the 3 promotions needed to achieve top driver pay( in that short of time) then I would encourage him or her to do it. Just tell them to surround themselves with good people and listen to them when they try to help, give them the task and trust them to do the task, and then get out of the way. I wish Con-way had a more enticing way of attracting good talent from the driver pool, maybe a managers training program that allows them to start a little higher up the latter than fos like fom or small terminal manager or sales. just my opinion

yeah, I know a few. I'll just say this, if they were a driver working the same amount of hours they would be making a lot more money. Pay drops off quickly after 8 hours. I had heard my FOS saying one late night that at that point 12 hours into the day he was making around 75 cents an hour.

doesnt matter what you are making as a driver, each terminal has a set starting pay. larger terminals start higher.

you will see some fos at large terminal making more than a salesman at a small one.

i would say expect 850 to 900 a week salary to start.

icp works out to about 2 and half times a driver. cause driver is based on 40 hour week. fos is based on whole salary. and 14 percent instead of seven.

they start some guys off street higher, but usually only if they are related or a close friend of a regional manager or higher.

some terminal managers at small terminals. like 15 doors. only make about 60000.

first time ive encountered this where the delegates could possibly make more than the delegator. Obviously the number of hours are different, but it's subjective for the latter.

I am not sure what their pay is now a days but it has always been a big hit in pay. I would be interested in being a FOS but not the way they treat their people. If you think they treat the drivers bad, be a supervisor. Remember those picnics, TDC's and so on that are voluntary for us? Mandatory for them. Now, do you like your hours? Being a FOS they throw them around from one shift to another. So in my opinion, if you like making less money, giving up some weekends and having your shift changed at any time, by all means, apply!

Don't forget also, being in management is not as secure of a job as being a driver. I wouldn't do it. FOS's are always under the microscope. They are always the blame for the #'s

If considering a move to a salaried position, don't do it for the money! If all you are concerned with is max-ing out income, go to linehaul and stay there. To have a long and enjoyable career as an FOS or higher, you gotta really want to do it. Not for the money, not for the perks and certainly not for the power...you will have less power as an FOS than you do as a driver.

Yeah, you'll have to go to the picnic....that's a tragedy...eating burgers and playing softball...demand extra pay for that..you will also have to attend the Christmas party...that's totally unfair...good meal, drinking and dancing...the TDCs..??? Been going for 11 years, at least 2 events a year, and wouldn't miss them, nor would my spouse or my sons, and I don't make them go...you may have to flip some pancakes, or cook sausage, or make snow cones for the kids...get some good rest before that punishment..
You will probably enjoy starting your weekends on Friday rather than Saturday, and because I know your location and that it is a good service center, with an SCM who treats people fairly, your days will probably be limited to 9-10 hours...you will probably have to attend one or two weekend meetings a year, depending on the region, for about 5 hours each..and while I am sure most here believe you will be starting at about 500 per week, there are those here, current and past, that know better...

Enjoy the new position, and your chance to make a big difference at the FACs your service center runs to...having chatted with you for over a year now, I know you will make a difference..

ok here is some more details, i would never reccomend fos at fac, it takes longer to get promoted. unless you are the favorite. but then they still dont want to let you go cause it is hard to keep good fos at a fac, #'s is all it is about, be prepaired to here about them everyday. you will think but why cant they average them out for the week or month. no they will tell you about them everyday. then when you hit goals it will always be you should have done better. it is hardly ever good job. unless you are the one lucky fac with a good bosses. and day shift is what everyone wants, and when you get it dont think you can keep it. not about senority with fos. they can move you to any shift anytime and say like it or quit.

go with a small end of the line terminal. pay will be less, but you live in a smaller town , hopefully houses are cheaper.

you can get promoted to sales after one year usually if you do good. you would think larger fac would be better cause you handle more freight more people.

no regional mangers say smaller is better cause you have to do everything, like billing, csr work. order parts for trucks. do po's for office supplies. you know all that stuff somebody else does at a fac. human resources. everything. so regional managers say you are better to be promoted.
plus you will work less hours at small terminal. like 10 hour day instead of 12 to 13 at fac. like fridays. drivers come in 2 hours later. fos doesnt get to. he works two hours more that day. at least at fac's I know.

This was from many moons ago but I know for a fact that the FOS (at that time) made less per week than my husband but blew my husband's ICP check out of the water big time. The FOS at that time was a braggart and actually showed his check stub.

For me picnics and party's are pleasure, Con-way is business. I don't mix the two. Its nothing against anyone personally its just the way I am.

Just make sure that there is no work discussion at these events and they are a great time...That's my rule..It should be about meeting families and getting to know the people you work with better..

Picnics and parties give the management types an opportunity to scope you in a different light.
