TForce | Ups buying abf ??

looking for another carrier

ups wants another carrier, because they got screwed when they purchased overnight, out dated facilitys, trucks, 25 yr old trailers with slick tires, doors that dont raise up,even the new equiptment looks as bad as the old, never washed or cleaned out, mobile,al cant have soap on yard to clean a windsheild, dock workers reported for tearing up freight to manager, manager says cant change old habits the overnight way, of course the manager has been with overjunked and ill ran for 28yrs. iam sure if ups had to do it over again it would not be overjunked that they would buy period.

Do you guys think it will HAPPEN ?? ABF is a great company

Absolutely not. UPSF is under it's own BS contract and ABF is still under the NMFA. UPS just paid billions to get out of a pension fund. If they were to aquire ABF they would then inherit their pension liabilty. And if YRC goes down then that leaves ABF as the last man standing with ALL of the pension liability. UPS is in the business of making money. There is no way this happens.

Not to badmouth fellow teamsters but that would be the stupidest move this company ever made and it has nothing to do with how ABF is run frankly they should have bought them instead of us they seem to have a better understand of to pick up and deliver freight. It is purely a stupid financial decision we are in a subpar union carrier they are in the master freight buying them would force the company to make us master freight not the other way around. Then all their senior people get raises because we currently make more. It would be an extreme cluster. It is sad but the only way any union employee is going to work for UPGF is starting from the bottom. Now the salesmen and management I can see being recruited but buying another company no not in this recession its cheaper to let them fail and buy up their equipment and property and have the workers start all over. Its sad but that my friends is capitalism.

Do you really believe that UPS did not have a clue who or what they were purchasing? They knew exactly what they were doing and they already attained their goal.

I really don't think they would buy any company at all. They will just ad more and more people as they need them. Its not like there will be a driver/employee shortage any time soon.

UPS need's to FIRE all the OVERNITE top dog's and move on overnite is junk. They where on there way out the door when UPS came in. If it was not for the UNION I would be in a box and homeless.

On the other hand, UPS paid a premium price for Overnite(approx 1.6 billion cash). I believe they paid allot more than what they offered a few years back before the purchase. When Overnite spun off from Union Pacific Railroad and went on the open stock market, Overnite stopped spending money on everything, equipment Ect, Ect, to make them selves look good to a potential purchase. It worked and UPS bought them. The Union thing, Its all good.

I really don't think UPS would buy ABF. Two very different contracts. Our wages and benefits are very good as far as I am concerned. But I think ABF drivers would have a big problem with out work rules. But if the economy continues to decline and ABF starts declining also maybe it might be a good thing for both sides. Only if that was the case.

Then come 2013 The ABF workers could show UPSF workers how to get a descent contract. Of course, I think hopefully we have learned from our mistakes and can do it on our on.

Just a thought...
