FedEx Freight | Smoking in Company Trks

I'm yet to see this memo but I understand that KC drivers are having to sign a paper stating they know and the memo is hanging in SLC that you can no longer smoke while in a company vechicle after Oct 1st. This will also apply to Fedex Frt:ranting2::TR10driving03:

That story was started on page 3 of this link; http://www.truckingboards.com/truck...onal/67476-upper-mgt-its-time-tell-truth.html
It is posted in El Paso. I saw it on Friday when I was there, and I was told it is also posted in Harrisburg, but I didn't go in the drivers room when I got back today, so I didn't see it for myself.

Here is the memo originally posted by Snowball;

OK here is the big news you have been waiting on.

PRESHIFT AND POST

To: All FedEx National LTL

Subject: Smoke-free Workplace: Vehicles

Date: September 15, 2009

On October 1, 2009, FedEx Freight Regional, National LTL, System, and HQ (“the company”) will expand its no smoking policy to include all company vehicles in all states.

The company prohibits smoking in all enclosed buildings, but had allowed smoking in certain company vehicles where there were no local or state smoking regulations. The company’s revised policy extends the definition of "place of employment" to vehicles; therefore, the company will prohibit smoking in all vehicles that are owned, leased or provided by the company, including but not limited to tractors, trailers, hostling units, and company owned and leased cars.

To maximize the utilization of our fleet, team members must share vehicles and other equipment, so making all of our offices and vehicles “smoke free” is the right thing to do. The hazards of second-hand smoke are well documented and we must ensure that our people have a safe and secure work environment.

Please carefully review the updated policy and direct any questions to your manager or a Human Resources team member.

Remember, ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING.

Mike Mxxx, FedEx National LTL

is'nt this discrimination?

Nope.

Discrimination -

- treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit: racial and religious intolerance and discrimination.

Being a smoker is not a class or category, it's an activity. You are also not allowed to urinate or defecate in the trucks. (and leave it in there) This is also not discrimination.

The majority (80%) of the population do not smoke. That 80% should not have to smell the effects of the other 20% when we share trucks. If 2 smokers share a truck, I don't see a problem. FedEx just decided to side with the majority on this one.

Yeh, right. Homosexuality is an activity too.
Poor babies don't want to smell smoke....spray the cabs with some of this when you''re done.
Discounted Fart Spray $2.1

Wonder when they are going to stop the coffee spillers, oh I mean drinkers, from drinking their coffee in the trucks along with eating cookies and crackers. These people trip me out. They get in the truck and can't put a top on their coffee cup, spill it all over everything and will be the first one in the meeting to stand up and say when are they gonna turn up the trucks and what are you gonna do about these smokers. GET A LIFE!!!!!!!

I doubt the spilled coffee is a danger to anyone's health. (although I'm sure the government has funded a study or two researching that subject.)

Some terminals will force drivers to keep their trucks clean. This includes the coffee drinkers. The used to have a service come in and clean the trucks in KCM. I'm not sure if they still do.

Name me one spry that will effectively eliminate the stench of stale smoke.

There are none, but FeBreeze does a pretty good job. I was in a tractor that reeked of stale smoke one night. Next day, I soaked both seats and the headliner with FeBreeze and then went to work on the dock. After my dock shift, the tractor still smelled a little, but it was bearable. Until I started the engine and the ac/heater fan started blowing.....

You should have dumped what you had left in the bottle down the defroster vents and this would have prevented the smell once you started the fan...

without videographic proof i defy anyone to prove i was smoking or not .if i was accused of smoking (or anything else the burden of proof falls on the accuser.i am tired of the crap over smoking.the smokers i know tend to be the hardest working, most sociable people.smoking contributes billins of additional tax dollars to our economies both local and federal.and pays for things that both smokers and nonsmokers have access to.when smoking is outlawed just remember those billions of dollars you will be paying extra mr and mrs nonsmokers.because the fed will not just do without that money.i know nonsmokers that go around smelling like the south end of a north bound skunk, but i guess theres nothing in hte memo about that.or the ones whose teeth are green and breath smells like rotten tuna
