After 10 years with roadway this place is like night & day. For the most part they treat you like you treat them. Its nice to enjoy my job once again and not be plotting revenge on my way to work for a bull$hit letter i received from our top heavy supervisor team. Good luck & happy new year.

I am also an ex Roadway employee and agree with GO40 . A.B.F. is a good company to work for. You are not always looking over your shoulder for a supervisor who wants to give you a letter because he has a quota to fill for the month.

Company

We have the only teamster NMFA job with full pay & benefits. Yes, thanks for management that has had the foresight to keep us debt free during a downturn in the freight business & competing with all the rate discounting.

The one big reason that we are DEBT FREE is because the TEAMSTERS refused to allow ABF
to buy out of the pension fund. which they would have had to borrow the money to accomplish. Also they appeared to learn their lesson from when they bought Carolina & almost took down both companies, something YRC didn't learn from. ABF is a good strong company with good people labor & management and I hope it continues to be the bar for excellence in the field.

Pension Obligation

Yes the company would have had to take on debt to buy out of the pension fund but would have been more stable without the pension obligation. That obligation has kept YRC from being able to find more funding. The corporations that are saddled with pension obligation are not as attractive to lenders or investors.

i wish you could show me some actual proof of your statement. YRC isn't in any of this because of pension obligations or teamster work rules just plain bad business management. The golden rule don't buy what you can't afford. abf more stable without the pension obligation just means they would've had the right to cut their contribution. thank god they weren't allowed to do so. this is a good company but they do what they do because of the union protection not because they are better people. they already would've had us give concessions & mr kemp would've still gotten his raise. I wish him well with his & I am looking forward to mine on april 1st.

Pension

I didn't say that the pension obligation or the teamsters are the cause of YRC's predicament. Management or the lack thereof is the reason YRC is in debt & struggling. Just about every mistake that could be made has been made in the acquisiton/merger of Yellow/Roadway/USF.
ABF is the only freight line that has made acquisitions & survived.
But I stand by my statement that debt & pension obligation makes a company less atrractive to investors & lenders.
As good as ABF is to work for I still don't trust management to look out for the employees. That's why we have a contract. If we did not have representation some of management would be tyrants & ABF would have trouble retaining employees. I know several little Hitlers in management that would relish being able to kick employees around & fire them to satisfy their ego & insecurities.

So, your wishes are only for the working men and not the laid-off men? Ouch! :biglaugh:

it was meant for the rank & file of abf. the happy new year mr. kemp was sarcastic !! fyi..when abf merged with carolina i was on layoff for the good part of 3 years so i know that pain.

Okay.. thanks for the lay off...again Fort Smith Bean Counter, Lay off notice AGAIN at 042, 'The Fort" being blamed for the call per 042 management(or lack of). Doesn't everyone remember being profitable before r.p.m.? and the 'Old Man running the shop ABF has shown a LOSS every qtr under the r.p.m.. Don'e believe me, check it out 1-2 basis points/qtr. Stupid is as Stupid does. Thank goodness Howdy Dudey was shown the door!

Glad you will get your raise...haven't had one in 2 years and increased healthcare costs each year (actual pay cut) so not everyone is as lucky as you.

haha and to top it off, no pension/401k contributions as of 1/1/10. I'd say in the last 2.5 years with no 401k and increased health care costs, that's about a 5-6% pay cut... and if you factor no end of year raise, that's another approximately 6% (3% per year) loss. yay G.O.!
