After 21 years at Yellow and CF at 7 different terminals. I fell into a job at Fedex Freight. Starting at the bottom, been there done that many times. Forget the union/non union thing. I've been in this business 29 years, 7 non union. The last year living in a truck. Fedex Freight seems to have their sh*t together from what I'm being told. Will be spending a lot of time on the dock, and city. Plenty of experiance here, so no problem. Any tips for starting out at Fedex Freight? Will be nice to be home every day. Even if I don't work every day.

Barney

Welcome to the FedEx Freight family. Not sure if you signed up as a city driver or a road driver. But since you are saying that you will be doing plenty of dock work you maybe at a center that runs to a hub. The other drivers at your barn will be bringing you up to speed in no time.

:shift:

Welcome aboard!!! All you can do is do your best and be honest with them. The only thing that really annoys me and I am sure will do the same for you is the way they micro manage everything and treat you like you are an idiot. They will try to let you know they know everything but if you are tactful about it sometimes you can convince them there are better ways to do things

welcome aboard barney...i.ve been here 6yrs. after 20 yrs with a union carrier...its the same ole freight game...advice to you is be patient learning new procedures-intermec, details in signing delivery receipts and bill ladings,dvir's...don't show attitude to anyone at stops...and don't offer suggestions unless asked-they do the thinking, you do the doing...good luck

I've been in this business 29 years,

Sounds like your to mature to be hired by us, I'm surprised, you must be in location where drivers are at a shortage..they only hire those in their early twenties here..you see mature people show up to apply for the job but then you never see them again ...

Why...

Who knows maybe it's of their own volition..or Maybe they are not called back due to age and or history.....

They love to get them Green off the vine then they can indoctrinate them, after all we wouldn't want any thing like free will...

Good Luck Barney...

Welcome barney. The above is good advice. However, I'd add don't bother offering suggestions even when asked, unless you think you'll get in trouble by not answering. Just give them something to write down so they feel they are doing something useful. Because in the end, they will do what costs more, is less efficient, then blame workers when it doesn't work Just do what you're told and stay off the radar.

I must agree with this statement.....stay off the radar....can't stress that enough.

Thats because a lot of original Yellow Freight management and sales people went over there after the original Roadway people cut them all. Not that I blame them, YRC/Roadway sucks. I already called twice by my former terminal manager to come and work there. Then I was called a couple of times as well from some of the other management that transferred over to ABF. I guess they both need some good drivers. Well, good for you there barney. I hope it works out for you.

welcome on board barney. For working city the only thing to look out for it just make sure you don't make a habit of confirming bills on the wrong trailer, make sure to always change trailers in the intermec after doing a switch or swapping out trailers. You'd think it'd be an easy fix for them to make in the computer, but it's not and they get all whiny and pissy about it. I hope you like it here, most people fit in nicely, it really is a good job, most management treat the employees with some level of respect and consideration, and generally speaking is a good work environment.

Oh, come now. You wouldn't be lending any credence to the rumor that the managing director in the LA Basin made the comment "We have succeeded in our goal of reducing the average age of our linehaul group...." at a meeting in SBO, would you?

Thanks for the welcomes and the responces. I'm 48 and been driving since 19, and have worked a lot of different jobs in this business. I may be a little older, but I bring a lot of experience. Especially to the dock. Spent 10 years at CF and this so far reminds of CF. The people I've met so far seem to be happy they're working there. I hear ya on getting paperwork and computer stuff right. No job is perfect. But judging from the responces on this thread, there are some good people working there. Thanks again for the nice posts.

go in to work everyday with a smile on and cuss under your breathe. stay outta sight and outta mind. as soon as you get on a lift you better be a frieght movin mutha f****r with your seatbelt on. red shirhs will pound into your skull bill/hour. screw the customer, its all about the numbers. PERIOD

This really happened? If true, this was a slip of the tongue of EPIC proportions! Just imagine a lawyer with that quote during a ageism suit?
