Anyone out there, especially from Local 509, having issues with management failing to supply ice water, etc. during the summer months? This was a standard practice at the Gaffney terminal for at least 10 years, even before UPS Freight...For years they even provided Gatorade until UPS Freight management decided that diabetics may not be smart enough to not drink it and possibly have a reaction..Our ice machine broke, they took it out and did not replace it and our TM, in his usual cooperative manner has refused to provide ice for the dockworkers. We are planning to file a greivance on Monday under past practices. Its very sad that the TM says he is not obligated to supply ice for the employees... and he obviously is not humane enough either. Maybe we can contact The United Way and see if they can help with this matter, or better yet, stop our contributions to United Way and buy our own ice???

Here in New England I have never heard of such a thing in my 30 years of service with the company. Every once in a great while the terminal will have a cooler of cold drinks on unusually hot days, but I have never heard of supplying Ice. Sounds like you guy's had an unusual good thing going for your selves. Past Practice? Its worth a try but don't hold your breath.

their are no past practices, ups doesn't care about its employees only production. we used to get free coffee/ hot chocolat from the machine every december. they stoped this a few years ago. we used to have a softball turnament between the local terminals, UPS decided that it cost to much to rent the park, in this recession. UPS doesn't care about moral or its workers. its not overnite anymore, its a business. untill someone passes out on the dock from heat exhaustion nothing will change. and the only chnge will be a termination from stealing company time.
good luck with your past practices.
i remeber a past practice that you were expected to show up to work everyday. no 10% board, no on-call. show up everyday or get fired, i guess not anymore.
sorry for the rant.

[/quote] You go get em Brother ! we successfully Lobbied (Grievance) and got a brand new ice machine. Now sometimes they will supply Gatorade sometimes not. My solution to that is I bring my cooler buy some mix and supply it courtesy of the local Union!!!!! WIN WIN !!!!

Outstanding...its the little things that make the biggest victories..

..`course there are a few big ones that are/will be pretty important also..eehh !
:shift:

Update...
So...two weeks, a brand new freezer stocked with 140 bags of ice appeared on our dock... courtesy of our management team. Maybe they actually have a conscience, maybe the grievance I filed got their attention, or maybe their United Way percentages are REALLY important. Either way, the dock has ice water and that's what's REALLY important. And it is the little things that make a difference..

That's great!! This only makes sense if you want a safe working environment and at the same time keeping production up, everyone wins. I have seen more and more coolers filled with Ice cold drinks on allot of the docks in New England during this unusual heat wave. I still have not ever seen an Ice machine.
