Just watched an American Trucker episode about UPS at the Speed Channel website. Go to speedtv.com and click on the American Trucker show.

Pretty interesting.

If you click on full episodes, it is the one called "In Search of Big Dog" and it shows a picture of some antique UPS trucks. Big Dog is a legendary 49 year safe feeder driver who runs Cincy (Sharonville?) to Louisville everyday.

They must have different rules over there in package.
He and the American Trucker host weren't wearing their reflective safety vests during pre trip inspection or during their drop and hooks?
I got chewed a new one when I forgot to wear mine.
Eveyone has to wear them at my terminal even the TM if he is outside the yellow brick road.

You know why UPS is so big on implementing safety measures.
Simply because if anything unsafe ever happens, the fault will always be the one who is injured,or worse killed.

That was an interesting episode but that host is such a tool. I wrote him to tell I liked the show but all that screen animation crap to make it look like a old movie gets real old after a few minutes and makes the show almost unwatchable. Instead of taking some constructive criticism he copped an attitude with me.

He's an idiot as far as I am concerned, but I do like the concept of the show.

That show was pretty much a UPS propaganda piece,if you ask me. They spent about five minutes talking to the driver that the show was supposed to be about and 20 minutes telling about how great UPS is. Don't know how much the show cost UPS but they got their money's worth.

Say what you want to about UPS and I had my problems with them when I tried to work part-time one year during "peak season", but it is at the top of the money and benefits among trucking companies. Union and still making record profits and you cannot argue with that. When so many are blaming unions for forcing so many trucking companies out of business, UPS is the prime example that a well managed company can be profitable along with being union and paying good money and providing benefits through the union.

I used to have to wear one while on the dock.

Here's is the Hulu episode. They actually had a UPS Freight tractor trailer driving by.
Thanks CDL holder

Feeder driver's and package car driver's do not have to wear the vest when performing duties because they are supposed to stay with equipment, not wander around.

Only shifter's and yard personnel are required to wear the vest while in the yard.

UPGF is fairly new and our safety training lack's alot compared to small pak.

As an example every time I have to drive someone's tractor i find some thing's wrong that you would be hard to find at small pak like missing or broken triangle reflector's,fire ext. not secured, outdated FHWA sticker's on trailer's,low air warning buzzer or light not working.

Light's out or missing, air leak's on service side of brake system, worn out tire's and brake's,worn out spring hanger's and equalizer's.

Those thing's are checked by every driver at small pak everytime they pretrip and the most important post trip insp.

When we were Overnite, and even after we were rebranded, we never did post trip inspections.
If the driver had done a post trip.
The next day when we went to take out a city route,on a trailer that was used the day before,we often found signal light bulbs blown out,and flat tires on our pre-trip.

Nice informative American Trucker episode, thanks for sharing Dockworker.
I only have basic cable because I am more a computer junky then a TV viewer,so I don't get the Speed channel.

I watched the episode notice how they showed Cincinnati as being up by lake Erie. I would also think that big does more than a turn from cin to lvl.

Thanks Dockworker, and thanks for throwing the link to the episode up.

TB used to have a forum for feeder drivers. Was that removed or am I just not looking in the right place?

The only people who wear safety vests are our yard guys. Drivers in brwon uniforms don't wear them to pretrip or drop and hook. Not our policy in feeder department.

Small package and Freight are at opposite sides of the transportation industry, small pac has a much larger profit margin than we do. Thousands of packages on a trailer @ the rates they charge = "Big Money", very little competition + set your rates= Big money. Freight has many competitors, huge discounts, cut throat= smaller profits. Here @ Freight I believe as long as you have your vest and safety toe shoes on ,you may get away with hooking up in your underwear as long as you're on the yard!
