Just Wondering,
I filled out an application a while ago for Casual,PT Dockworker online and got a phone call to come in and fill out some paperwork. Was surprised they called, forgot I even filled it out online.
Does anyone work out of this terminal or has workrd out of?
Was asked if I have my CDL A, said yes but lack in exp. Was told they would let me practice or yard jockey to build my skills, then take road test to peddle. Don't know how much of that is really true but did notice a sign when I was leaving the lot they are hiring drivers.

Have a safe holiday!!

yrc is not your friend, at that terminal or any terminal! They'll never pay anyone to "practice" unless you were to do it on your own time and even then I could see them whining about the fuel!
Ever stop to think that if it were a good place to work that they'd have to have a sign out front. The word is out and they can't get anyone to slave for them, even in a depression economy!
Use them before they use you. You be in the drivers seat, so to speak!

PS: PA has a bill in the legislature to make it the 23rd right to work state so maybe you can save a few dollars there monthly let alone the massive initiation fee. Here its $300 and if you're working for a starvation wage of $11.90 a hour(Remember $14 a hour dock minus 15%)you can throw away a weeks wages real quick for what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Goodluck MrV.
Its not your Father's Yellow or Roadway anymore, its yrc!

Give the man credit for at least trying to work and not collect public money for sitting on his azz all day like so many others choose to do. You have to start somewhere.

Would never in a Million years put a man down for working. The sad thing is he'd have to work 80 hours to achieve a middle class lifestyle and thats just wrong.
Thanks to pos jimmy!

Any information I can get is very much appreciated!! I am working part time right now doing dockwork, but it's an hour drive to the terminal ( 37.2 mi each way) and plus $22 a wk in tolls. This YRC terminal is 10 mi from house, no tolls.
I didn't talk to BA or shop steward yet about the details of unions dues and bylaws.I am a member of LU IBEW (teleData Tech) I know each union has their own laws and dues , only been working less than 6 mons a year and health Ins is going to run out by November. I'll still pay dues to keep my card with them but I am sick and tired of being on unemployment.
I do collect partial UCB while working PT and it's a pain.
Yes ...practice with backing /yard jock would be on my time......sry I didn't write include that little bit info.
I just don't know if it's set time on dock or will I be ON CALL on a daily basis?
But the gentleman I spoke with was pushing alittle to build skills and test out to peddle. My guess Linehaul is hard to get.
I don't fully understand the bid for a route thing(yrs of service?)
Anyways.....Thank you guys for any info or replys on this matter!!

By practice they more or less mean you can jockey in the yard, an awful lot of drivers in the past started out on the dock and learned how drive by jockeying, you won't be the first nor the last. I do know they are short on drivers at 143.

Here's a question.....If it's union and need drivers, don't they just take people from the hall to fill position? Does Teamster LU have an out of work list to sign when you get laid off?

I have a friend who works out of lansdale he said they can't get anyone to work there in the city or dock.weird work rules there. All kinds of freight no one wants to work city-dock.Can't say much more only what he says.

I don't know who you're working for now, but if a company that's (been mismanaged to death's doorstep, smoothered under a mountain of debt, kicks the prior management to the curb years too late, brings in new management with a new Board of Directors that immediately gets down to the business of giving itself a juicy raise, abuses the employees they took money from to finance the raises for the Big Fat Board of Directors, will let (require) you work 70-80 hours a week so you get the feeling you're not as poorly compensated as you really are etc. etc.)..... if all that sounds like the what you're looking for, go for it.

The place I work at isn't bad at all, I spend almost half a check for fuel & tolls to get there . They do offer schooling to drive .....BUT.....you have to be full time employee and to get that, lets say from talking to other employees, is very hard to climb the ladder.
This YRC terminal is real close to my house and say they are willing to work with me to build my skills in maneuvering TT
(on my own time).I would like to get into driving is what my goal is.

As for your reply...did not know much about the inner polictics. But I'm still doing my research on them. Thank you for your insight and point of view.

YRC is desperate for drivers. They have no retirement plan, giveback on the pay, treat employees like garbage. The company financially is a zombie that will fall into the grave soon. They need drivers because their employees are jumping ship left and right. Yellow is, has been, and always will be a POS company that sucks the life out of its employees, shareholders, and aquisitions. I would pay the fuel and tolls to stay away from this toilet of a trucking company.

Make sure you understand your pay rate. Part time will not score you any health insurance or pension credits. You will be on call but may get lucky with a fairly regular gig. Don't take for granted what the manager tells you, they all promise the moon and deliver the sewer. Our union does not work like the construction trades where the employer calls the hall for workers, but the hall does know who is hiring and can tell an inquiring member where that is. What you are getting into there is better than nothing and not much more than that for all the reasons that have been previously mentioned. Of course if you use them while they're using you it could help you out. If your goal is to work closer to home, spend less time and money getting there and get some seat time in a "big rig" and you don't forget that, you might have a winner there.

Another thing to consider is, you'll be just a Change of Operations away from not having a job. Or another round of terminal closures away from not having a job. Or a combining of terminals away from not having a job. That being said, like ABFer said, if you so choose, use the prix to get the training, then find a real company to work for.

That's pretty much how I feel about(use them ,use me). It's better than going with a mega carrier, getting paid under 30 cpm and never being home to enjoy time with the kids.

Hey I'm missing something here... Yrc is a mega carrier, just an unstable one. you meant a mega truckload carrier. Hey like another poster said take a chance on
the POS. Then ditch when you get the skills. SWI
