A wreck involving two tractor-trailers resulted in the deaths of both drivers Monday night along U.S. 220, about two miles south of Rocky Mount.
ROCKY MOUNT -- Two tractor-trailers crashed head-on Monday night on U.S. 220 near Rocky Mount, killing two freight drivers and bursting into flames that spread to trees beside the highway, Virginia State Police said.
The highway was closed for about an hour where the trucks crashed near the Franklin County landfill at Commerce Road.
Police did not identify the drivers. One was driving a Pitt Ohio truck, carrying soap from Greensboro, N.C., toward Roanoke. The other was driving an empty wood chip hauler from Covington.
About 7 p.m., the Pitt Ohio truck crossed the grass median into the path of the other truck, state police Sgt. Rob Carpentieri said. The drivers were trapped inside their cabins.
The trucks were engulfed in flames when firefighters from three companies arrived, said Daryl Hatcher, Franklin County public safety director.
"It scorched several trees, but it did not spread into a brush fire," Hatcher said. "They were able to put it out."
Baby wipes and hand sanitizer spilled out of the Pitt Ohio truck and were strewn on the highway. Northbound lanes were closed until about 8:40 p.m. A detour was set up for southbound traffic
