Has anybody heard how cheap con-way is going to be this year? Well let me tell you, 1st only 7 drivers for the whole state, now I know some states do this already but others let you fill the classes from each SVC. 2nd, no practice, no equiment rental, possiably no mileage and no paid time to attend. Now lets look at this, 100 million dollar profit and we can't afford the tdc anymore. That's just a sad,sad state of affairs. And last it looks like the way they are going to choose who goes is the one with the most state wins picks 1st then so on down the line till they run out of spots, if they still don't have it filled then the driver who has been to state the most times untill they fill out the spots.

IF CON-WAY CAN'T AFFORD TO DO THIS THE RIGHT WAY THEN WHY NOT JUST CANCEDL IT FOR THIS YEAR AND SEE IF NEXT YEAR IS BETTER.

Are you able to back any of this with proof, or is it just a friend of a friend. I have heard none of this from any reliable sources, I'm told it's the same as last year.

This is line haul gossip.

There are NINE classes of competition.

Member companies of a certain stature are "strongly encouraged" to fully participate and support this activity to the nth degree. Failure to comply to this "encouragement" is met with a predetermined disdain and an unspoken threat of censure.

Damn right Con-Way is going to compete (in all nine classes) as expected. They will do no less this year than they have done in the past...perhaps even more with the current publicized profits.

As mentioned there are nine classes of competition...only seven drivers per state is patently false.

There are certain participating states that do LIMIT the numbers of drivers a company may have in a given class. As an example (and I am trying to construct this from memory) the state of Indiana allows each company just three participants in each class...covering the possible eventuality of one company winning first, second, and third place in one category. I may have the details wrong...but there is a limitation.

Other participating states have no such restrictions.

So the above post is little more than LH BS...some peckerwood looking to stir up discontent. Usually started by some malcontent upset the company is spending monies on the project as opposed to giving them a new truck or a larger raise.

We go throught this insanity every year...and next year will be no different.

Everyone should do the TDC at least once...it is a blast.

Too bad it is sponsored by the ATA. The only shortcoming of the entire effort.

Rat i hate to tell you this but you are wrong as of right now. the states have al been given a buget with most being in 7000.00 dollar range. this is not linehaul gossip it comes straight from the SCM. Now since this is such a big, nasty, BULL**it change start calling the so called saftey department and start **tching. If enough drivers complain maybe the tight wads will get off there AS* and do whats right. OR YOU CAN SIT ON YOUR AS* AND DO NOTHING AND FIND OUT TO LATE THAT I'M RIGHT.
AND 1 LAST THING I HAVE BEEN TO SEVERAL NATIONALS SO I DON'T SPREAD GOSSIP I GO TO THE PERSON IN CHARGE ASK AND THEN PASS IT ALONG.

2012 Truck Driving Championships What A Waste, yes it is; nothing but a big waste! Just propaganda for the public and companies just patting themselves on the back. It is a ton of corporate waste!!! walken 1414, if you want to go to these fixed festivities I really think a guy should pay his own way! A true Championship Driver, is someone that can run through Chicago,Detriot, or Cleveland during rush-hour with a set at night during a blinding snow-storm with blowing winds at 35m.p.h and not scrap paint! Doing all of this night after night and NOT expecting anything more then the paycheck! No pats on the back, just money for time spent... Man those were the good old days before we got all these new crying truckers that want everything given to them...

The budget you speak of I assume is the monies Con-Way has set aside for the entire TDC competition/per state.

Although I have no facts to repudiate your information, I am skeptical. I would be leery of any information given by an SCM. I am not saying they would intentionally give out misinformation, but rather have incorrect or skewed facts as can sometimes be the case if the controlling party is NOT at the forefront of the effort.

Contact your regional safety dude and asked him/her for the actual facts.

If this is true...I will be shocked. Con-Way HAS ALWAYS been a big supporter of the TDC. The underlying reasons aren't important. But they always have had a large presence in the competition.

I would be curious to know what the rationale is for such a radical change. Con-Way was a big participant when their profits were in the tank. Now that things have turned around this makes no sense.

The above is not definitive of a Championship level driver...rather it is one of an idiot too dumb to get off the road until conditions are safer. This style of cowboy trucking is what gets people killed and careers ended.

Its called living in the Midwest and Great Lakes area. If you lived up here you would spend a lot of time parked on the side of the road hoping for dry roads and sunny skies.

I for one am looking forward to this years TDC. I like to compete against my peers, I like having a chance to win a free trip, I like having a chance to win a brand new truck, I like pigging out on hamburgers and brots, my kids like getting there faces painted and slamming down 15 snowcones a piece.I have always enjoyed the TDC and I am 99.99% that I will enjoy it this year as well.

Budgets are not new, there is a budget set for every competition, always have been. That doesn't mean they are limited the number of competitors per class etc. it may mean pizza instead of steak or other ways to reduce the Amount spent. Yes some states limit the numbers allowed per company, but that isn't Con-ways fault. The TDC are a great thing, fun and a great way to meet new people. I think everyone should try it before they knock it. Problem is, most guys are affraid to find out they are not as good as they think.

You say that now,BUT how many times when you worked for Con-Way did you call central and tell them you were not running because of the snow????????Exactly..Theres nothing Cowboy about driving in the snow, ice or any other condition...Just part of doing this job..It comes with the territory and if drivers cannot handle it,then im sure McDonalds would be willing to hire them....

Look I guess this is the bottom line. If you want to give up 2days pay, pay your own way to state then go for it. I know soime states limit the number of drivers, however this year conway has set the buget as low as 7000.00 for some states, less than half of what it has been in the past. If conway can make 100 million in profit I think they can afford to do the tdc right. Every year at the nationals the quality of events has gone down hill. Now it did'nt help a few years back when they wanted as many drivers as they could get, because all they got were drivers who wanted to have a vaction on the company and did'nt give a damn about the competion.

who gives up 2 days of wages? Even the line-haul guys get an average of what they would normally make. They miss Thursday and Friday night runs and get those two days paid at an average of their daily pay. I know Indiana limits each company's participation but Michigan is kind of a "run what-cha brung" state. In Michigan you may get asked to move to another class just to help cover all of them. It was pretty cool seeing a uniformed Con-Way driver at the wheel of a UPS package car.
