Is there a UPS forum? I have looked around for one several times and haven't been able to find one.

You are correct, my mistake. I am thinking they combined both forums (if the fog is lifting from my brain). I have not seen any package related issues discussed on this board (meaning the UPSF board)

I don't know of one either ABFer, but to answer gazers question, package car is the brown truck that delivers the packages, feeders are the trucks that pull doubles and or triples between their terminals, Freight and package are 2 very different animals.

I can guess what they make, but that's all it is, a guess. I know in Central PA it takes some time working the hub before one can become a FT package car driver.

Same here Roadrunner73, in Tulsa you start part time loading or sorting, if you can hang on and get a package gig, last time I enquired, several years ago, the wait for feeders around here was up to 20 years.

Interesting note, 1 out of every 4 drivers hired at UPS is hired full time, a Pittsburg KS feeder driver told me this, but that one hired full time is a minority, dude said in his 20 some years he had never seen them hire a non minority full time off the street. I have met guys that were hired full time feeder off the street, out of Des Moines IA I believe, so I don't know.
 
Talked to a feeder driver out of New England. He has 20 some years as a FT feeder driver and has to run second on a team to have a bid.
 
There once was a separate forum for UPS Package, Feeder and FedEx Express and Ground.
It's been combined into UPS Freight and FedEx Freight forums.

In my area UPS Parcel guys got promoted from within, It's a long process as they start from sorting and work their way up.
I believe they are hovering in the upper twenties lower thirties per hour. They deliver lots of small packages in their brown trucks.
You work very hard and briskly while they monitor you using Telematics.
During the peak season (Thanksgiving through Christmas) They will hire temps.

They will probably be a bit tighter and read the riot acts when hiring temps because of this video:

About a year ago I was talking to a UPS package driver in Columbus, Ohio. I asked him what his hourly wage was. He said 34 something an hour. I said no way. He showed me his check. Plus it looked like he usually got more than 10 hrs per week overtime.

I talked to a package driver and he said his run was designed to finish in 10 hours. Some runs in 11-12 hrs with occasional help.
The days of 8 and skate are slowly dwindling away.
I started thinking...this technology might someday migrate over to the freight side once they get their organizational skills in order.
 
I worked for UPS for 36 years. 24 as a package driver and 12 as a feeder driver in NJ. Feeder drivers make around $32/hr. give or take depending on the area. Package drivers are within .25 cents of that. NJ is one of the few places you can get hired off the street as a feeder driver but in 99% of the country you can't.
 
In Chicago, to be a local feeder driver you have to start as a dock hand and then with time you can move up to package car. Give it some more time and from ther you can move up to local feeder driver. This is Local 705 work.

You can get hired off the street but, it doesn't happen often. These positions are for road feeder which is Local 710. In most cases you get on as a tempory seasonal driver. At the end of the season they lay you off. If your worth your weight they will call you back in a few weeks and offer you a permanent position. This is how it works 99% of the time. Once in a very blue moon they will hire for permanent positions right off the street but your work history and driving record have to be spotless. If they are they will call you in for a face to face and a road test. Once you pass all this they will do a thorough background check and if all comes back good, they will put you on permanently. This however is rare but it can and has happened and you don't have to be a minority either.

UPS pays VERY well. They however expect performance and accountability for what they're paying you. You also receive"Caddilac " health insurance at no cost to you as well as a defined pension. it really doesn't get any better then Big Brown. Hope that helps.
 
You can not get in to a705 feeder position from the street. These only go to 705 drivers moving up from package car. They start hiring for seasonal drivers right about now. These are on call positions with no guarantees in terms of hours per week. You may work 5 days one week and only 2 the next. You will not recieve ANY insurance when you are a seasonal driver. You will be laid off right before Labor day. If they liked your performance they will call you back and offer you a permanent position before Peak season starts which is in October thru the end of December. It's not easy I know but, if your long term goal is Brown,this is what you have to go through. This is how 99% of there drivers have gotten on. Many had spouses who had insurance and they had a little money in the bank saved up to fall back on. It's not an easy path but, it's well worth it in the long run. I am only speaking for the Chicagoland area.
 
In NJ we have a formula in the contract that says feeder drivers get hired 2 from package, 2 from transfers, and 1 from the street. We have no summer seasonal period but we do hire peak drivers for October through december. The good thing for off the street drivers is they go on the seniority list when they are hired. If a package driver transfers to Feeders and he comes in after you .You are ahead of him for overtime and job picks even if he has 20 years in package. The package driver still keeps his seniority for vacations and lay off protection though
 
Same here I believe in terms of being off the street and being ahead of a 20 year man. We hire summer seasonals and Peak seasonals out of my location but, I've also been told its the largest hub in the United States excluding World Port which is an air hub. We have no package cars based by us, strictly feeder facility. I can't imagine what this place is going to look like between November and December. It's already busy it seems at night and this is April. I've also been told they aren't crazy with package coming over because they kind of freak when they get behind the wheel and see what it entails. In fact I heard one of our feeder guys just went back to package, it wasn't for him. I guess you can do that that only once and retain your position back in package.

I am retired as of 9/2011. I did 24 years in package and 12 in Feeders. I would have never gone back to package. I used to say a bad day in Feeders is better than a good day in Package. We have had a few go back though. Most often it had to do with the hours and issues with family. We had over 330 drivers on our list and maybe 1 or 2 went back.
 
Does anybody know if UPS (Brown) hires any summer and Christmas temp guys permanently in St Louis, if you do a good job? They were hiring full time guys off the street 6 years ago, but I didn't have the 1 year experience needed.

I would be willing to move to Chicago for a year or two if this is the closest location to accomplish this. Can someone from Local 710 give me some more info on this?

Are you allowed to transfer to another terminal (St Louis- Earth City) after a certain amount of time? Do you keep your seniority? I would appreciate any comments.
