There are two types of logistics firms. Asset based logistics, which includes operating trucks or equipment and warehousing, along with labor, and non-asset based logistics which is price comparison of rates. Non-asset base logistics is what is changing the LTL industry. Instant price comparison between Yrc and anybody who wants to publish a low rate causes low profits on even the mom and pop shipper's freight. It takes the choice of carriers away from the traffic manager, and puts it in the hands of a bean counter who only looks at the cheapest rate. If mystery carrier is only paying 15.00 per hour, who will be cheapest? I've said this before. Nobody cares if you and I are union. All they care about is what will it cost me to get my freight from point A to point B.
