FedEx Freight | FedEx to offer US staff buyouts in cost cut effort

NEW YORK (AP) -- FedEx will soon begin offering buyouts to U.S. employees in an effort to cut costs in the face of a weakening global economy.

The world's second largest package delivery company hinted at cutbacks earlier this summer when it said that slowing economic growth would crimp its earnings well into next year. It has already removed some aircraft from its fleet of more than 600 to account for a loss of demand.

While FedEx hasn't yet decided how many positions will be eliminated, it will likely focus on slow-growth areas like its Express and Services units.

Express is where FedEx got its start in 1971, and it's still the company's biggest segment by far. The speedy shipping division, which moves 3.5 million packages on an average day, has been hit hard as people shift to slower delivery methods to conserve cash. The unit is also being dragged down slowing Asian growth and a reduction in demand for Asian goods from the U.S. and Europe. The unit reported revenue of $26.5 billion in the latest fiscal year and has more than 146,000 employees worldwide — 102,000 of those in the U.S. .....................

remember when we merged? in my barn alone ther had to be 8 or 10 guys wantin that buyout and only1 or 2 guys were allowed to take it, fedex come in there saying if you want it fill out the paperwork and it shouldnt be a problem, then the merge happened and those guys were let down because fedex said no way... they saw how much money they were gonna have to shell out and started backtracking what they said... this isnt gonna be any different if it comes to freight, they would rather starve you out then have to pay 50 or 60 grand to buy someone out......fedex is going down hill fast and we cant do anything about it except get ready to starve then go look for a job.... how many of you guys have got a straight answer out of your ccm? we cant get a straight answer to save our lives. 4-7 bid runs are cut almost everyday(the same runs) and when you try to figure out whats happening you get Im talking to freight flow guy who apparantly doesnt know what he is doing, which I dont buy he knows exactly what is going on. they are filling purchase waggons and trains and company drivers are setting at home starving, and it isnt gonna get any better, from a business standpoint it makes sense to p[ay less for the same job, so dont come to the table saying you dont know what id going on because a little common sense tells us whats going on. your holding on to your comp drivers if you need them but you wont use them unless it is absolutely necessary
