A Mississippi man died in Birmingham today after he was crushed by a tractor trailer he was helping to unload.

The accident happened about 2 a.m. at R&L Carriers on Valley East Industrial Drive.

Truck driver Steven Spillers, 52, was behind a truck helping to open the back doors when the truck backed up and pinned him between the trailer and the loading dock, said Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Bill Yates.

Some of the dock workers heard him yell, and discovered him pinned. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:57 a.m.

Spillers lived in Mississippi, but ran a regular route for R&L from Memphis to Birmingham.
