I don't mind the job, I hate the BS that we are spoon fed (if you choose to eat it). I get good miles but like CM says, things have changed. Competitive pay was a stalwart of this company when I first came on board. We are currently running around 18%, in most cases, behind what our competition is as a shuttle position. Combo and truckload fares even worse.
I find that the best way for me to deal with this outfit is to have as little contact with people at the terminals as humanly possible. For example, when I arrive on the yard at night I proceed directly to my tractor and ready myself to make a run. If I am assigned a load, I hook to it, check it out do my paperwork, walk up on the dock to get my paperwork and speak maybe 2-4 words if that...."Good evening" and "See you tomorrow" or "Have a good night" and turn around, head for my truck, and depart asap. If I pull an empty, I make zero contact with anyone at the terminal. Qualcomm dispatch is all I need.
Yes we get good miles out this way and I am thankful for that. A short run can still render 500+ miles. A good run can be a 600+ turn. I guess I choose to not buy into all the hype and all the crap that this company shoots our way. Just because they say it does not make it so. We have been hearing about raises for how many months now? You are a number to me just like I am a number to them. No advancement and if you settle into a combo driver position ($0.045 per mile less) there you will stay forever. Your chances of making shuttle and getting the rightful $$ is doubtful.
Is it a job? Yeah, it's a job and beats the hell out of unemployment. Could it be MUCH better...By all means.
CM still loves me and knows I am right!
