Any other terminals laying off? We were warned at a preshift meeting on friday "nobody is going to like what's happening next". This week, part-time dock temps were laid off. Before anybody says "they're just temps" they were held to the same standards (or higher) as us employees were, and a lot of them had more tenure than hired-on employees as well. Now we have a procedural plan (from corporate) posted for how the layoffs are going to work. Up next is partime and fulltime dock employees. What do we need them for? Oh yeah, they're the ones who cube the hell out of the sub-service trailers and get the most motor moves at the lowest wages on the dock. After dock employees get laid off, driver apprentices are next on the list, because they're more important to our operation than dock workers... Best of luck to all who will be laid off.

Did I mention we're still hiring drivers?

So your saying we should lay-off drivers? It doesn't work that way.

Never has. Full time DSR's are the last to be laid off, by service rank. Makes sense, doesn't it? Believe it or not, we did do dock work, and there was life before dock workers....

Man. I don't need a terminal. But what part of the country are you in ?

Hard times are here people. Not coming any more. They are here. For real.

I wish the best to everyone. Keep your head up.

every terminal in the company posted this notice... we are so busy, guys didn't look twice at it. Certain areas will be affected, but don't panic.

wouldn't it be smarter to hire more part time time temps at low wages, no benefits and hold them to the same standards, insteading of paying full DSR wages... :)

I'm in the great lakes area.

I'm saying that we should stop our apprentice program, we shouldn't have the next class of apprentices lined up, and we should stop hiring drivers before laying people off. We should also have our trainers do actual work instead of training drivers that we dont need. That's for my terminal at least.

Driver shortage along with the rule changes next year, they are gonna stock pile as many drivers as they can. And as much as I appreciate the dock hands, I remember how angry we were when they came in and " took " our jobs. A part of me still wishes we had nothing but drivers working here.

Still never good when the company struggles. 3rd quarter results are not favorable.

Con-Way hires pure dock workers now? When I was employed with CWX/Con-Way, they hired a CDL period. You worked what ever when ever, and as for economic termination (they don't like the word "lay off", that's a "UNION" Word! LOL) I was economically FIRED in January of 97, but 5 weeks later they called me and asked if I wanted to come back, and of course, I said YES! I left the job I had worked at for 2 weeks and came running back! LOL Anyway, things ARE looking weird for LTL trucking what with new rules coming up, and the economy of course, but personally, I'm not too worried, I think it's just a phase, things will pick up later after the first quarter or so of 2013, I'm sure of it! :)

Last I checked we still made 25 million or so... we just didn't make as much as they wanted. And apparently that's our fault too, since our healthcare cost them too much... So we're the cause and we're not doing enough to make up for it, how much more can we do? I swear it's never enough.

The debt looks to be the real problem. Looks like theyr still paying for CFI.

A couple you guys stated about new rules for next year. What are those new l.t.l rules?

FMCSA , CSA , and HOS. Familiarize yourself with these acronyms. Google them learn what they mean and how they will affect you. Scour these boards for related info. Talk to drivers at work about the Compliance Safety Accountability program , Hours of Service , Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and don't forget the DOT.

We heard the same thing, but they told us "head count" needs to be lowered because they are anticipating Obamacare expenses. Oh yeah, out part timers are the first to go, and we cannot hire drivers although we are 4 short.

Tiss the season. But there are a flood of rumors going around. Cutting this or that. Adding more purchase carriers. We can only wait and see.

How about offering senior drivers (who are within 5 years of retirement) an early out.

Most would be getting maybe $1100-$1200 per month max from their pension. The company wouldn't have to pay into the 401k, vacation, and other bennies. They could get the top hourly wage earners off of the books and keep the bottom guys who get less pay, no 401k, etc..

If you get 4 or 5 guys to leave early at a service center the company probably saves $150,000+ per year x that by however many Service Centers = a lot of $ saved.

I think it's a win win idea. The company gets rid of the top dogs and the middle to bottom guys keep their jobs!!

Offer that to me and I'm gone yesterday!

To what I understand, if you would take a voluntary layoff, you cannot collect unemployment because Con-Way keeps up your insurance. Oh yea, you still have to keep paying your part of it also.
