Maybe its just me or at my sic but it seems as if new hires or even guys that been around for a year or two think they are owed something these days. Many of them don't understand that some of us spent many many years on the then so called flex wheel. Now a days its just a flex bored and by us the drivers on it are at least given a heads up on what they are doing the next day or for that matter the next week. It drives me crazy seeing the whinning and crying by some who have no idea what others went through to get where they are. If you don't like the job or the way your treated then just quit!

have some patience most of them Noobs Quit before they Reach Top pay WE have a Revolving Door at Con~way !!

That's true I don't think a lot of the new boots stop to think that the old timers were once where they are at one time.

Personally , I don't want people to quit if they are willing to do the job and be safe. As far as all the extra stuff , who cares? I try to help newer employees fit in and perform well. My point of view has always been to try and keep as many drivers as possible.

I noticed that the more drivers that there are that have less seniority than me , the better the chance I'll get to do something I like versus being told to do something that's probably not interesting.

Thats a very good point, didn't really look at it that way. I do the same to help out as much as I can but there a couple rotten apples that just arn't worth the help at my barn. Guess thats everywhere though.

We are given no idea of what we're doing the next day or the next week, not around here anyway. If we haven't heard from them by 8:00, you gotta call them to find out. In today's case, I get to call back at 11:15. The guys on the very bottom of the board sometimes end up having to call 3-4 times a day just to find out they're coming in at 16:00 and are wasting their time even being there. Wasted a whole day for nothing. I'll ask you this, when you were working so damn hard to get to where you are today, how did you feel? Did you get discouraged? Did it **** you off when the company screwed you? Probably so, now when someone doesn't appreciate how hard you had to work to get where you are we're just crying. I cry shenanigans! You have to admit, by all accounts CCX was a lot different than Con-way Freight is today, so the "treatment" you got was probably a lot different than what a newbie gets today. For one your bonus check was a hell of a lot bigger then. Some of you had a promise of a pension. The idea of "if you don't like it, then quit" doesn't make a damn bit of sense to me. No employer is perfect, but if there's an obvious problem (and we definitely have our share) then by God let's FIX THEM! This place could be a great job for everyone again, if two things would happen: 1) all of us would grow a backbone and stand up to the strong arm attitude of management and 2)some of you old timers would actually give a damn about the new guy that would like to have a rewarding career instead of being so selfish and wrapped up in your sweet deal to care.

You can stand up to mngt.all you want, but if there is no work for you or whoever, then there is no work. I'm sure the original poster did his time at an FAC.

I did what I was told when I was a noob. Yes it pissed me off and I got very discouraged, even on the brink of hanging it up several times. But I kept my mouth shut. Came in and worked a split shift sometimes, or worked the inbound dock then went home for 10 hrs off and back to run linehaul on Friday night. Worked city all week until Fridays. Was last man back every Saturday and still had to make Saturday delivery then spot trailers at customesr and then pull all the trailers away from the doors then come in Sunday to put trailers back after wash weekend. Ran city turns to reships 3 or 4 nights a week and be back as soon as your 10 hours was up. Called in 4 or 5 times a day just like you! Hell, even got laid off at one point! The only difference being I kept my mouth shut because at that time there was 10 other people lined up to take my job if I didn't! Your right about bonuses being bigger. Probably because we moved the same amount of freight with about half the amount of drivers!

A lot of our noobs are going through a simlar situation and do what their told and I respect them for that because most of us have been there. I try my best to help them out. IMO the whole operation has got a lot better for new hires than what I remember. Maybe thats not the case at your barn. I personally just get sick of hearing all the negativity and bad mouthing that goes on when some of these guys have no ideal what most of us went through. To be honest with you, thinking back on when I was in your shoes, I didn't see the light at the end of the tunnel and was jeleous of some of the senior guys who I thought, at the time, walked right into a bid or were in a position I thought they didn't deserve. Thats just how it is at Conway and if you don't like it than leave!

Welcome to the world of LTL. When we started over 20 years ago we got nothing the first year... nothing. As far as being available, this has not changed because the industry has not changed. Freight levels dictate the need for drivers, unlike the fire department, we have always staffed for the minimum, added as needed. I worked two other jobs when I started with CCX to make ends meet for my family. I could see the possibility of a career with CCX so I stuck it out. Back then it was one or two 10 hour nights on linehaul and that's it. No dock work or city work, just call during the day to be told they don't need me but end up running linehaul. Half full or half empty is your choice. You can be cynical toward your employer all you want. But the reality of things is that a flex board is just that, flexibility within the workforce to adequately cover the work load. No one sat around the office looking for a chance to screw me. When the opportunity was there to work, I worked. Oh, and the profit sharing thing... on average it was the equivalent to an additional paycheck. Uncle Sam took half and the rest was delivered in two installments, one before Christmas and one in February. The year of the strike was the biggest check, but what it took to earn it was tough.

Conway is not a club or an adoption agency, its just a trucking company, that in my opinion blows alot of smoke up our butts, more than necessary, having said that if you need your hand held or some sort of understanding try the Union companies and see how that works out for you!:1036316054:

I have a question...

What happens when there is nothing left to take from the employees?

How is the "Doug" going to show favorable margins when there is nothing left to steal from the rank and file?

What happens then??...

This company has been claiming profits through benefits cuts for years...BSing WS...the investors...and screwing the people who helped build the company.

Dougie has been lying to the American financial markets for years...think Enron.

Year one...steal from the employees...show a profit...

Year two steal more from the employees...show a profit...

Year three...more of the same...

A variation of the Ponzi scheme.

I think you get the picture...

"Gotta be our own bank" & "We're Back!!!"

Right...

When i saw you had posted on this thread, I just couldn't wait to see what kind of BS you had come up with this time. FEDEX must have treated you bad the last couple days. Make you want to come on here and grind your ax. It must be pretty sharp by now.

I know you two guys don't really agree on much. But I must said y I think some things he says make sense. Profits are up during a tough freight market. I think these benefit reductions and sub service usage may have a part in that. And that profit level still isn't enough. Now we were told we need to squeeze 2-3 more pallets on each truck so the company can make 45,000,000 more dollars. What do we get outta that? We will eventually be down to an hourly check with out any benefit package whatsoever in my opinion. So far I have been correct on the merit pay, icp, pension. I say the 401 k match will never be reinstated. Though I didn't see the vacation debacle coming, it didn't surprise me. I think shareholders have been sold a bill of goods based off of employees' losses.

No axe to grind with Fedex..,.,

It is the constant and unrelenting barrage of BS spewed from AA and the "Doug"...with the malicious intent of stealing the retirement benefits from hundreds of employees for the sake of his and the BODs bonuses that fires me up.

This WAS a good company...the best of the best...now it is barely mediocre...more along the the lines of Central Transport.

Hundreds of good folks hanging on to a hope that things will improve...it is NEVER going to happen.

Evaluate your options now and document your results, then get back to me in 24 months.

Grinding the axe with conway, that's what i mean't. But ok, 24 months from now. I'll either be cashing a big bonus check, or working with you.
Go cut some trees down with that sharp axe.

I don't necessarily disagree with rat..just tired of beating the same ol' dead horse. LTL business is not what it was 20 years ago. You change with it, adapt to changes or get left behind. If it gets to a point where I can't make a good living here, I'll go elsewhere. But I don't think that will happen anytime soon. The company made good money last year..stock is way up (yesterday), and I think wages will go up soon, despite what the union people say.. they're dreaming if they think our wages will go down if their's does. Delusional thoughts.

While I think " just move on " or " just let it go " when I read Rat's post that focus on 1 guy in particular so often , I have posted my own thoughts that come to similar conclusions.
As I have said before , how long can your positive cash flow be based on cuts to your foundation? This is not sustainable.
Imagine if you tried add on to your house by taking the first floor apart to build the 2nd floor?

Bottom line here folks, beer is happy. Good for him. I'm truly glad hat he has the run he wants and is able to justify the inequalities in pay and the general lowering of overall opportunity for drivers because he makes "good money". I've never said we don't make good money. We could make better and that's why I don't understand his mentality. If we pushed back for better benefits and compensation in line with the rest of the company he would benefit as well. And the ability to hang on until you get x number of years seniority and then you'll get the run you want is gone. They keep cutting and cutting on runs and before you know it, there won't be anything left. The long term reward is gone.
