Chicken Man - How was your first day at Sysco??

SyscoAtlien - Did you have the meeting today about the new DIP scale?

Updates please!! :)

Sorry Syscowife, I've had a pretty crazy last couple weeks at work. I go for drug test, physical and road test Monday and orientation starts on the 29th. How long will orientation be? How many days and hours per day, anyone know?

Mine was 2 days I think, they put me up in a nice hotel, then put me to work, now I'm just in the way. A bother if you will, Sysco is just another huge company, we never hear the positive, only the negative, how screwed up we are, how its our fault that customers are leaving, sorry CM, every Friday we have a meeting, and every Friday I get depressed, its like they want to try and ruin the weekend, I will never get this place. Even though we do all the hard labor, most of the time I feel like we are a burden on the company. I hope your opco is better than mine...it has to be.

Our orientation is two days of videos, then into a truck. The two days are about 8 hours, then into a truck fo 10-16.

Same thing here, GT... but we only have meetings once a year. "Do more with less, do better than you think you can..." etc.

All we can do is our best. And I challenge them to find anyone that can do better! Good luck!

Thats a good way of looking at it, I was having a bad day when I posted that, I just hate being told how bad I'm doing, I just wish they would focus on the positive for once, like the fact that my customers love me, they tell me all the time that I'm the best driver they ever had, misery loves company, but I refuse to be miserable, for every 30 times we get told how screwed up we are, we get one attaboy, thats not a very good ratio..LOL.

I agree. I hear all the time how my customerrs love me too, but the only attaboy's we see posted seem to be for those that need to be 'cared for' so they don't get pissed and leave.

I do wish sysco would look at the value of the divers that truly care about their customers!

I totally agree, I love my customers, they are the reason I go to work. Well, that and my family, you know what I mean.

Road test, physical, drug test and strength test all done today. I'm good to go and ready for orientation next Monday! Now I'm going to enjoy the rest of this week off, might go to Florida for a few days!!!

Finished my first week at Sysco, and so far I really like it! Compared to my last job as far as hours it is just nice to be able to sleep in my own bed every night. I had orientation Monday through Wednesday and then I was on a route yesterday and today. I ended up with a driver that has been with Sysco for over 20 years. We had to cover a route out of a shuttle yard, so we ended up around South Carolina all day. We had 16 stops and 800 cases, we finished the route from the time we got to stop 1 to stop 16 in six hours. Went in at 530 and was off at 5. Today we ran a downtown route that was SWEET, lol. 11 stops about 850 cases and mostly hotels and stuff that we pallet drops. Went in at 430 and was off by 2, we even sat down and ate lunch for about 45 minutes. I told him he should retire and let me have his route! I've heard all the horror stories about Sysco, I even heard some of them from people in management too but I like it and I think it is going to be a really good fit for me! I'm off all weekend, running another downtown route with the same guy again Monday!

Thats great! Take all you can from that 20 yr man, he lasted 20 yrs for a reason! Pay attention, when your on your own it will get tougher, you might not get those sweet routes, also, product recognition is a big thing, once you get that down its a whole lot easier on you, as you will know what product to look for in the pile.

Congratulations CM!

I know it won't be this sweet when I'm on my own GT, lol. I will soak up as much information from him as I can and learn as much as possible while I'm with him. I really like him and hope they keep me with him as long as I'm training. We used the same scanners and Xata at my last job, so I know how to use all that stuff. I mainly just need to learn the product, he was handing me cases out of the freezer Friday and asked if I had the corndogs. I started laughing and said hell they could all be corndogs for all I know, lol. I love how much lighter everything is though, our cases in the freezer at my last job were all 50 lbs. or more! They told me I would be training for 4 weeks but he told me that I wouldn't need anymore than 2 weeks if that, which is good because I'll be ready to make some money!

Congrats CM. Probably a dumb question, but do yall work weekends at sysco? 5 days a week mon-fri, or mon-sat with a day off during the week? Just wondering. Thinking about applying at the Houston, Tx location when my lease is almost up, so I can move back down there.

Thats great that you know the scanner and XATA, heck thats half the battle, if all you gotta do is learn product you got it made, I have delivered for quite a while, but I have learned some pretty cool little tricks, even from guys that haven't been around that long, some of the fellows are pretty creative, always finding ways to make the job easier, and as you well know, the easier you make it the longer you last!

Hey you!!!!! Yes even a wore out old man can be taught a thing or two, I have taken things from new hires before, I keep my mind open, everyone has good ideas, thankfully I work with pretty seasoned shuttle guys, I have spent my time on nights pulling sets with FXF, but this is a bit different, I take all they will give me, they are great guys and have been doing this for a long time!

I got back around 3:30 yesterday and one of the transportation manager asked me to go out and help someone that was way behind. So I drive out to meet him at his 10th stop and there is another guy there too help also. We had to wait on him for about 20 minutes. When he finally got there his trailer was an absolute mess. He had crap EVERYWHERE! Chicken boxes that were all busted up, eggs and milk spilled all in the floor and pickle juice all over all the boxes in the cooler. It was embarrassing taking some of that stuff in to the customers. What made it even worse is this guy was standing there watching me and the other guy get everything straightened out and even had the nerve to get on the phone a couple times... I missed my sons baseball game and didn't end up getting off til about 730. I learned what not to do when I get out on my own though, lol. The transportation manager gave me a copy of the route manifest and he was supposed to be at stop 10 at like 10 am and he got there at about 530! Stops 1-9 got like 40-50 pcs, he had one stop that got about 100. I don't know what this guy was doing but I don't see him making it, you can tell he was frustrated and I still kind of felt bad for him even though he was pissing me off!

Thanks JRut, yes all the newbies have to work Saturdays. I was off last Saturday but starting this weekend I start working Saturdays. I'm off on Wednesdays but they said when school starts back I will probably be working 6 days as long as I have enough hours. Someone told me that they will work with you and try to get you one Saturday off per month though. The way I look at it is if I have to work Saturdays for a year after that I won't ever have to work another Saturday again, doesn't seem too bad when you look at it that way.

Yes GT, I've been paying close attention to the way that my trainer has been doing things. He gave me the scanner starting Monday and has let me pretty much do everything. Driving, scanning and handling all the paperwork. I can see where it is very easy to get frustrated trying to dig crap out. There have been a few times I have wanted to ask him to find something but I didn't. I just took a deep breath and kept on digging, lol.

Hey Chicken Man, I'm glad to see your first week went well. What shuttle yard did you go out of to go to South Carolina? My husband was thinking about maybe going to the Cartersville yard after a year or two depending on their pay there. Are you still doing the downtown route with someone? How is the traffic? Well it looks like we are all set to move up there at the beginning of June (june 9th) and he starts two weeks after! So look for the new guy then! LOL
