Yellow | Freight Levels at your barn

I worked with guys that used to talk about the 60's and early 70's when there were about 20 freight companies in a 10 block area, many had worked for all 20 in the same month, one guy working 3 shifts in the same day(well actually day and a half) as casuals, One of the reasons given was that a few of the companies would not work them if they were full time at another, some that were full time would take vacations to work across the street..........now none of those old docks are freight companies all are either torn down or bricked up doors as warehouses.

no doubt, guys cant think that far ahead .
ill never have to start over again . that would never happen . guess what its happened .
I do know 4-5 guys from Stroudsburg that drew a retirement for roadway and were never full time.
then they changed it by putting something in the contract that says if you work x amount of hours they had to put you on the preferred list and if you said no then you couldn't work anymore.

Somewhere along the way there was a clause in the contract that allowed a casual to sign a waiver giving up any claim to seniority status. That use of the waiver was allowed if agreed upon by both the company and the union. It allowed a casual to work unlimited hours and was useful when the company had a need for help but couldn't find people to hire.

UPS guys made the same type mistake a long time back, although the end result might have been inevitable over time. It used to be that you had to have many years (at least 10) seniority before you could get vacation time off in the summer. The company said let us use more part timers and then more of you can have vacation time in the summer. Well, you know what happened there. Careful what you wish for.

that clause must of been another secret that 120 Stroudsburg kept to themselves ,along with fmla and lot of other dirty little secrets.
never herd of fmla until I moved to Kernersville in my 16th year.

FMLA is Federal law and maybe that's why it's not specifically in the contract. And I think it only came into effect in the 1990's sometime.

yup we all know this know but as they say we were all mushrooms in Stroudsburg they kept us in the dark and feed us ****

Like longblade pointed out 653 (Charlotte) is training part time dock workers when we have over 100 men laid off on the dock. Our TM is concerned that we won't have enough help during the summer but refuses to recall a single laid off member. This stirs up the men, both regular and laid off. Then we are threatened with our jobs if we don't train the guys that will replace us! This is 2013, right?

I feel like this is a manufactured "crisis" by management. I think 653 has less than 10 casuals training. Like I have stated to management before, If you have the freight and want it moved, bring some guys back from layoff. If you don't want to move freight, keep doing what you are doing. We'll see....................DS

Be a good time to hang a letter to remind everyone when they come around at contract time wanting to get along for the good of the company exactly how good your memory's are. Good luck docksteward,.keep up the good work!
