ABF | White city trucks?

The 2007 & later emission compliant tractors do require more maintenance than earlier models due to having to change/clean the DPF but they are not as costly as retrofitting earlier models. The retrofit usually costs more than the tractor is worth & the retrofit kits are not reliable. The company is keeping all of the 07 & later compliant units because many states/cities require that trucks operating there meet the standards & retrofitting older units is not feasible. Homesick is right about replacing the older units with nearly a million miles & there have been no new units purchased this year to allow the older road units to be moved to city operations. If the company wanted older pre 07 compliant equipment they would keep what they have.

How many trucks did you expect ABF to purchase considering most folks on this board were screaming to NOT accept the contract. These tractors are a good fit economically to replace certain city tractors that need to go.

Maybe enough so we don't continue to miss p/ups while someone sweeps the dock....

In a casual conversation with a diesel mechanic, he stated that there was a trend to buy and fix older trucks to avoid the newer troublesome emissions equipment on the new trucks. Could this have been a factor in their decision to buy used trucks?
That emissions issue could have a whole lot to do with it, I'd do the same thing myself.

The company has no choice but to use the later model units or spend much more on retrofits for older tractors. The places where the company can run the pre 07 compliant are getting fewer as more cities, ports & states enact stricter emission standards. The pre 07 tractors get better fuel mileage but the retrofits bring the mileage down. It's just not economically feasible to keep the older higher mileage tractors. Many of the older tractors the company sells are going to other countries where the emission laws are different than this country. A large number of the trade offs have gone to Nigeria.

I had a chance to look at some of the used tractors. They are mostly 2005-2007 model Freigtliners with Series 60 Detroit power & ten speeds. They have about half the miles of the current city tractors. The will probably be used for UE runs. They look good & probably had assigned drivers because the interior is good. They were bought from Ryder & there may be more bought later. They do not have DPF but are EGR engines. It is my understanding that Ryder & other leasing companies are moving some more of the non DPF units out of California because of the strict emission requirements. I think anything they buy will be 04 or later emission compliant. Also these will be easier than the Sterlings to sell later because Freightliner is still in production & parts for the Series 60 will be available for many years. The Sterlings with Mercedes power are going to be difficult to find homes for because the MBE engine & Sterling are no longer being built. I think buying these is a smart move.

In 90 ABF sold ANR about 300 of the IH road units. ANR painted thrm inside and out and turned them up a little and ran them several more years. Sorta the beginning of the end then!! I had one for a few years that was a very good truck!

Who cares if their used,I'm driving an 07 steriling with almost 900,000 miles on it. I'm not complaining because it still looks and runs good and has ice cold A/C. In fact it's in a lot better condition then some of YRC's road tractors.

Normally it is not a good sign when a company starts buying used tractors. In the past the ABF trade offs were better than many company road tractors. An equipment manager said several years ago ABF could usually sell tractors with less than 800K miles because buyers figures over half of ABF trades would run over a million miles. The reasoning was they would run them to a million miles & overhaul less than half of what they bought. There is also a depreciation allowance the first year on a used tractor but it takes 3-4 years to depreciate a new unit.
Yellow & Roadway bought many ABF used tractors in the past. There are not many large trucking companies still in business that buy used tractors.

There are not many companies left to buy used tractors FROM.

I don't care if I'm driving a '62 B-Model Mack with 2 sticks....( actually I do, but if I had to.....) as long as the name says ABF on the door,...same as the paycheck....and that's the best piece of equipment they can give me to do their business with,.....I am getting paid by the hour to do it safely.....and as efficiently as I can with the equipment given........Seen too many shiny wheel companies puff their drivers' head up with a fancy tractor, only to reduce his paycheck to help pay for said tractor. I like my air, and I like my power steering,...but if it needs to be a rental,......because of emissions..(I think you guys are right, that's the probable reason.)....then so be it. Give me junk......and.....I.....will.....drive.....it.....as.......safe........as.....I......can..............
