ABF | checkin/ dock combo with CDL

I guess you could call it entry level. It is a city LTL job, start as casual then through to new hire if you work out. I take it you saw an ad somewhere? New hires get one week vacation after two years, then you won't get a second week until 8 years seniority. Health ins and pension are good.

If I am a newbe to ltl trucking the my first thought would be what are the other LTL outfits in the area offering? 8 years to get 2 weeks. How does ABF attract new drivers to the Company with better offers out in the marketplace?

Checking is dockworker. But at ABF we don't just move the freight, we check labels, pro numbers and piece counts on pallets. And at the end of line terminals we all do both P&D and dock work.

Job description Dock,Checker,Hostler,Fork lift,P&D CDL Driver and then add a Combo to the mix on bid sheet and they got you doing what ever they want with you.

Add Customer Relations to soothe customers,....Making excuses for the Sales dept.when they are promising the Moon,....Re-repairing what the maintenance vendor screwed up/didn't do,....Keeping a close leash on the young hot-shot Terminal Mgr. to make sure he doesn't chase away all the business with his attitude,....various minor maintenance/cleanup jobs because management doesn't know how to delegate authority/ has no clue these things need done,......Don't forget to add these jobs...

What the heck is that all about? There is a scanning machine that takes care of all that malarkey. If the pro says it goes, send it!!

Sounds kinda old school to me.

:o

That's funny right there.
#1 We don't have no stinkin' scanners.
#2 There is misrouted freight all over the place: Four of the right pallets, two wrong ones to go with it; Pro sticker says one thing labels say something different. For a couple of i e's

the health insurance and pension.

almost every other LTL company you pay for health insurance.
YRC has the same health care and pension if i recall but they make less money.
UPS Freight you make more money, pay some for health care ,the pension sub par compared to yrc and abf.
ups you also get 2 weeks vacation after your first year seniority because of how its awarded.

i work at ups and would take the pay cut to abf rates in exchange for their health care and pension in a heart beat but thats just me.
it comes down what you personally desire in the end. i wouldn't choose a non union carrier if i were just entering the LTL industry , they make less money, no pension, bit i'm sure have a 401k, and pay for their health care.

Basically it sucks everywhere anymore. Just maybe sucks a little less over here. I feel sorry for those who are just starting out based on the current trend Maybe that trend will change in future.

I am sure it will change, but if your not willing to fight for what is right it won't be for the better.

It's been a downhill slide for us. Now days the union wants to be buddy buddy with the company. The government wants to bring in 11 million or more people to compete for the few available decent jobs we now have. That will further depress wages and benefits. The union can join in with the company once again saying the "in order to be competitive we need to cut blah blah blah" Perhaps they will even cry about immigration reform after pushing for it/endorsing it like they did Obamacare. I don't see this business ending well for the younger guys. I really hope I'm wrong.

I am ready and willing to fight for improvement. So far I've done all I could...trying to educate coworker/voters and making my vote count. If there is more to be done I'm ready but I am all out of ideas myself.
