I've had my CDL for about 14 years. Only been with Conway for about 6 months. When I was hired I was told I'd have to start on linehaul but that they were hiring 4 or 5 guys after me so after a couple months when those guys were hired and trained I could choose city or linehaul. So I chose city for now and I'm on the flex board. It's been pretty slow but I've been lucky enough to usually go in at 11AM or earlier and generally get my 8 hrs. Some days I don't & have went in as late as 1pm only once in the past couple of months. They call me MON-FRI every morning and give me a time to come in. I gave up on calling them months ago because they never know what time to tell me so I just let them call me.

I went in at 11AM this past Thursday and hit the street P&D for a bit & went back & worked the dock. We very rarely work our dock past 9:30pm, usually done between 8-9pm or sooner. I was told Thursday evening that there was a grocery run that night with a scheduled delivery time of 11:30pm and because the person that had been planned to run it was absent, I had to do the grocery run. Upon delivery there were 14 skids of various products that needed to be gotten off the trailer with my manual pallet jack and then broke down to the customers ti-hi or hi-ti specifications. I could of been done by 2AM but the customer made a mistake.

As the customer counted the number of cases on each skid a guy on a fork lift would take that skid that had been counted away to a rack somewhere out of my view in the warehouse. Customer ends up with a mis-count. After around an hour of trying to figure out what the problem was he concludes (verbally told me) that their front office had made the mistake of printing the wrong PO's for each particular skid. For example: Raisin cookies had PO's for chocolate chip cookies and so on. Now he says they had to retrieve each skid and correct the issue before I could get my paperwork and leave.

I knew my 14 hrs had past and even the 16 hour point was approaching. I called my barn to notify of the situation and was told no problem. He would send someone who lived in the area and I could drive that employees car back and that employee could drive the tractor back.

Long story short, I clock out at 5:33 on Friday morning = 18 hour day. I leave the terminal around 6AM get home, shower, eat a bowl of cereal go to bed around 7:15AM. It was a beautiful day & I wake up around 10:30AM thinking if I hadn't heard from them by 1:30 or 2pm I'd be off until Monday.

WRONG! I set down with family for dinner around 5:30-5:45pm place my order and dispatch calls me at 6pm telling me to come in for linehaul. I told him no way, not happening. I explained to him that they should have called me early that morning and let me know I was working linehaul so I could have adequate sleep and planned to run linehaul. I haven't ran linehaul for over 2 months. Further more there's guys under me on flex. He was pissed, told me it's still a work day and expect to be called into the boss's / terminal managers office on Monday / Tomorrow, so I'm not looking forward to tomorrow at all.

This is an extremely difficult place to work, especially for the first few years, as I am certain you were told when you started (or should have been).
They are correct, you had sufficient time off, and were alive at the time of the linehaul callout. You simply cannot refuse a work assignment, if you have had the appropriate time off, according to the new standards.
Having said all that, if your manager is a reasonable man, and you are an asset to the operation, he should be willing to take a pass on this one. Depends entirely upon your record to this point, and your attitude when he approaches you with the issue.......good luck......

Not that it really matters, but who were you delivering too at night? I used to deliver to Thom Thumb on night appointments. 'til 2 or 3 am

What you should do is call monday an talk to your TM.But don't try an tell him what the rules are,he will tell you.
Next time you think you will have the day off, call in sick before your time is up.

Might be what I do is call him.... I guess it's just me and I guess they can do what ever they wanna do but I didn't know they'd ask me if I wanted city or linehaul, allow me to pick city and then after over 2 months not running linehaul switch me after a straight 4 days on city flex (working mornings) and in the same week (actually the same day) switch me without warning. That's a whole different shift, night time. I would think they'd need to tell you in time to make sure you knew to at least sleep later in the day. I was prepared to work the dock hours if needed, just not linehaul hours, that's a big difference.

I'm also curious to find out tomorrow as to why I didn't have the option to pass it on to one of the guys lower on the board. When I was on the bottom, sometimes I'd go in at 10:30am and have to do a (on the same shift) linehaul / City turn that night starting at 9 or 10 O'clock and because one of the guys above me would pass it to me. Our shortest linehaul or city turn is about 200 miles round trip.

That is 1 supervisor being pisy about you not coming to work , being called into talk to the manager is 1 thing ( a conference call is the 1 that is bad).

It really doesn't matter, if Conway has a problem they will make it your problem, so I suggest you lube up and face the music!:fan:

Gotta go in at 10. Lubed up n ready....

I was dedicated to a love's on i75 for years. Parked the truck there, drove 600 miles per day hauling diesel or gas, no supervisor or problems. Beginning to miss it already.

our motto is safety first..Im sure you know that...So be ready to turn on your 10 bud.

The way we pickup out of hours guys is, they need to be given a ride back. Usually the manager brings another driver out to run the truck in, but you aren't supposed to drive any vehicle while you are on the clock and out of hours. I guess it's another case of safety first, if it's convenient for the company!

When looking for another job, your previous employer can only state your start and ending dates, your last job title, and any DOT reportable issues. Broken mirrors, bent bumpers, and missed work calls can not be passed on to a potential employer.

I'm positive that if you go in and brown nose, kiss butt, fall on your knees kissing his feet, promise your first born and won't ever buck the system again he'll let you keep part of your rear-end. Just don't buck the orders again!! :butt kiss::butt kiss::bowdown::6817::732:

What happened at your monday morning meeting.

3 others & myself in the office (closed door) . I was told there was a breakdown in communication from dispatch down, that I should've been told that morning and they agreed that there were others under me that were options to run it. I believe it may have been a rare occasion when a situation like this is leaned in the drivers favor but only because of all the things that could of been done to prevent it that were out of my hands. If I'd of been on the linehaul board and not the city, things wouldn't have had such a rosy outcome and wouldn't have happened in the 1st place.

Sounds like you got treated fairly. Many other companies, both Union and not, would can you for refusing work.

Hmm, that's wild, I wouldn't have ever imagined a union trucking company like Holland of firing a city driver for not taking a linehaul run or firing a linehaul driver for not taking a city run or for either to go OTR for that matter. I always thought their work duties were pretty specific as a matter of fact and that their contract outlined their job duties quite well.

I could be totally wrong but don't their linehaul drivers even have dedicated people that often times hooks their sets for them? One of Holland's employees recently told me that one of the only things they would generally get canned for is theft. He also said if their trucks AC doesn't work they put them out of service lol.
