ODFL | Is OD worth working for?

Vitran to OD is like going from Harlem to Park Avenue........Top pay,401 match,2 weeks vac and 2 personal days after 1 yr, good insurance rates and lots of miles

I just came here about 2 months ago from another national LTL company; it is by far the best move I have ever made so far. I was with the other place for about 10 years, had I known just how good it is here I would have left a long time ago. Don't get me wrong they are still an LTL company which means they want their freight moved and moved now, but they treat you like a human being, with respect. It makes you want to go the extra mile for them. But there are cons, no wait time, no over time, and break down pay sucks. But I am able to look past that because the other things are more important to me. Call it the honeymoon period but I am VERY happy with my choice, you would not go wrong with this company. One thing that I find very odd about this place (a good odd) is that 99% of the employees that I have had contact with are happy and willing to go out of their way to help you if you need it, just very friendly, I love it. Is there anything in particular that you are looking for as in specific questions or specific demands so to speak?

Well... Any place has got to be better than Vitran/Central Transport..

Here's my deal, I've been with Vitran for 8 yrs..and the last four has been a steady diet of crap sandwiches, lies and disappointments. But, the pros that I've got are 3 weeks vacation, a decent route, senority and earlier start time... The main problem is I DON'T want to work for Central Transport.. The 7 minutes worth of the meeting with Rob S (big shot from CT) told me all I needed to know about where this Vitran/Central merger was going.. I walked out of meeting after that...7 minutes was all I could stomach.

So.. With that said.. I like LTL, it's a different challenge everyday, so it's not the work that scares me or bothers me, it's the pay check at the end of of the week. After the CT/Vitran merger is complete, I'll be bringing less home to feed my three babies and wife.. I can't let that stand.

I just don't know much about OD other than its hard to get on there.

What service center are you looking to get on at? I may be able to help you.

I hear ya, I was #3 out of about 32 and had it made, I had it so easy but I was SO unhappy. Now I run my tail off, go here, go there so that part sucks. But I am happy, and at the end of the day it helps a whole lot when you like your company. I didn't take a pay cut so the pay doesn't bother me, being on the bottom you will have a few slow weeks but I don't believe that they over hire like some LTL's do. And FYI, if you do fill out an application and try to get hired on, be 100% honest. Tell them everything, if they find out you didn't tell them something you may get terminated.

Hey after working for Milan/Vitran for the last 8years and made the move to OD three months ago and can't figure out why it took me so long to find this job. BEST PLACE TO WORK!!!! They treat you like a family member, pay you well, give you good equitment to work with, feed you a few times a year and if you don't understand something they will help you figure it out. Thats your mgr's.,your fellow drivers are even better, they will help you and you don't have to worry about them stabbing you in the back, because they want what have. They look out for you and will try to help with anything. If you want to work in LTL then OD is the best place to be. They really do care about there people and there customers.

are you guy's hiring line haul around the Chicago area?

We now have 3 centers that service the greater Chicago area, CWS, DES, and CHI. Your best bet would be to call each and see what they have open. Openings are not always posted, as many centers usually have a pool of people who already dropped off a resume or filled out an application to choose from. You may want to do this as well.

ATL has 4 or 5 former Vitran drivers in the city that I know about. It took some a few months to get on. Don't give up. Keep trying. OD is worth being patient for.

Like posted previous, many openings don't get posted. Our terminal has hired 4 in last year, and never was an outside ad put out. Usually 1st there is a terminal notice asking current employees to refer. We are the best recruiter and less likely to get people who don't fit. 2nd, when ads are placed, usually don't state employer. Go to ODFL.com under employment. Gives locations active in hiring and contact info.

Do your road drivers stay out all week? I would be driving an hour and a half to the closest terminal so i wouldn't want to get home during the week..

You can request to bag out only, which means you run the system. Sometimes you are farther down the bag list than the master list which means you wait longer for a run, but once you get out in the system you can stay out for as long as you like. We've got several out of ATL that stay out for months at a time. I'll also say this, once you're ready to go home and you let central know that, they will send you home without question. So far I haven't had a problem getting home when I'm ready to go home.
