FedEx Freight | The new t680

I have one of these new T680's. They are nothing but problems. I'm wondering what problems other drivers are finding. One of ours was stuck in 6th gear and had to go to KW for repairs. Besides the automatic brakes kicking on at will and the windshield camera picking up anything and buzzing in your ear, now the dash cluster and lights are turning on and off at will. I had my entire cluster decide to stop working for an hour. Now none of the cluster lights will work. I told the shop about it and they said they know there is a problem but as long as they come back on eventually there is nothing they can do. Luckily now it won't come back on so it was sent to KW yesterday. They need to figure this out if we are going to keep buying these things!

I understand that KW has new flash coming out that will address many of these issues. I guess we will have to wait and see....Racer

i have to say i am sick of the t680 slamming on the breaks whenever it feels like it. It has happened to me 4 times. Our other drivers that have the t680 have had it happen too. It will even do i with nothing in front of you! I just hope it doesn't happen on icy roads or at highway speeds!![/quoteTHAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN...Is the cruise on when this happens? I know- no cruise on wet, icy roads. I drove one to hook a set, was impressed, they must have recruited Volvo engineers. I guess KW's will be the norm since I heard Volvo does not want to give codes to Fred to fix or update their computers, they want the work done at the dealer- how convenient, if your dealer is 100 miles away.

Was told by a driver in POR besides the things with the dash lights happening, he also has his cruise control kick off when he keys up the ol cb. The shop sent it to KW and they re routed the coax and some other wiring but still has the problems so who knows. Another driver in PAS said the first rain storm he hit, water came up into the floor boards--you just can't get better than this!!

Is their a manual in the unit? I found out that you could pull the cb mount/dash down to EASILY place your radio in it, instead of trying to wire and cram it into the small hole. (Add jokes here.) On the R 12000 units, not sure for these.

For easy hook up to your power, go to Radio Shack and get a pair of banana clips, not alligator- close the red and black power stems and place the banana clips in the holes now created, and you will have the best connection. You have to solder the wire to the clip for best results. Or you can get a plug that goes into the once called, cigarette lighter.

At UPS the drivers had boxes, usually small tool boxes and for the power, they spliced the wire so that they could use a cigarette adapter or if that did'nt work they could wire it for the C.B. posts. They used a trailer wire connector- one wire was white, the other yellow, for easy connection, to switch between the cigarette and post hook up. I always found the posts to work the best with the banana clips. Hope this helps.

I'm sure it's a C.B. speaker. The wire has to be up there somewhere.

I think they have to warn you before they tape you, or we are all in trouble.

Let's start a thread. What have you done in your unit or that would shame your Mother, daughter, @ Grandmother?

Kenworth trucks have been awful. Everyone I have ever driven has been a real p.o.s. I had one actually catch on fire sitting in the dealer for repairs in Oklahoma City once. It wasn't related to the repair I was in there for either. The mechanic said "hey what's burning?" I said "Oh that is just my truck on fire." He freaked out but I wasn't surprised. :biglaugh: The T660 I drove for the last two years as a gas hauler was the worst one. It stayed in the shop more than the road. The windshield leaked; dash lights/cluster was intermittent, never regenerated correctly, the bendix rollover prevention scared the hell out of me constantly slamming on the brakes, etc. The list goes on, but you get the point. It is the same issues on every generation of these trucks.

I think the FMCSA rules are forcing us to take a break, the vorad is causing the units to slam on the brAkes, unnecessarily.

The unit I drive let's me know where ALL the overpasses are, I guess when it goes off, I am supposed to stop and check the clearance.

It happens with the cruise on and off. No warning just BAM and you almost eat the steering wheel. Or as one of our drivers said " the dash computer flashed something but my face was to close to read it"

They must be good. UPS in my area is using them, usually tandem, if that makes a difference. Surely cannot be reliability. I guess they are just jealous they don't get the nap time we do along the shoulder. Move over boys, make room for them.

To fix the dash gages not working you have to pull the fuse at the top left corner of the fuse panel and break the circuit. As soon as you stick the fuse back in the dash comes to life, I have to do this twice a week.

Many times just shuting off everything lights heater ect. and shut the truck off. Turn the ignition on and let It cycle then restart to reset the dash. This is one of the things that KW has a new flash for.

Don't you think they would have tested these tractors sufficiently enough to find these problems before selling them. Or at least fix the problem on the new tractors. Mine is 3 months old. If this problem has been around for a while why are the brand new ones doing it??

These new 680's are experimental because they were the first ones off the new model line. That's what out shop manager told us.Maybe KW should have done like Toyota does build several hundred and inspect them for bugs then destroy them when they get through with them. I'll take a almost worn out Volvo over a new KW all day long!!

I don't disagree at all I am just passing on what I have learned while driving mine. Take it or leave it, but don't shoot the messenger....Racer

Oh no, I was told to never fix the unit no matter how simple it was . Unless I am a certified Dot/ FedEx mechanic, I have no business messing with anyting but hooking up my radio and making sure to KNOW the difference between the RED (+) and the Black (-) if in doubt, have them install it. So now that you have given us this info., we are no less better off. I need all the sleep I can get and a good snooze on the shoulder is helpful. Wait until you encounter the T680 Not Shutting off, even with the Key Removed from the ignition.....I can't wait for that discussion around here......

I had a Manager confront me about why my truck was running while I was in dispatch. I handed him my key and told him that it is all locked up and turned off, go see for yourself.....LOL....Racer

Cool! It will stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer

Well these things may have some bugs but they are one of the best bad weather trucks I've had. Mine seems to do really well in the snow and on slippery roads. Every time we get new trucks there's always issues but sooner or later they get it figured out.:guiness:
