SAIA | SAIA possible expansion

At one time I thought that would be a good idea. Now, the union headache of moving into the Northeast, who needs it? just go to the UPS and YRC sections of truckingboards and read the comments. Naw, let them have the headaches?

What union headaches? Estes, Fed Ex, and OD all moved into the northeast within the last 15-20 years with Union headaches. Why should Saia be any different?

Keep my pension and real benefits too.
Maybe you should read the YRC section before counting on that full pension being there, especially if you belong to the Central States Plan. I hope you guys get everything that you are entitled too. You've worked for it and you deserve to get what you were promised. Having said that, what a headache world you guys are living in. I'm sure some of the union LTL's are good places to work but just look at the possibilities when their not.

And gee why did this happen, a little known company called Con Job had something to do with it....Corn Flake was a great place to work back in the day........now tell me Con Job is better..

They can't afford to hire dispatchers with experience or common sense, can't hire anyone with knowledge of buying or maintaining equipment,no one can read a map to know the shortest distance between two points. Can you imagine the northeast's ex-union guys being talked to by central the way they treat us.It won't last.

What they should do is focus on improving what they already have rather than compound problems by expanding. Something to be said for having all your ducks in a row before making a commitment to expansion

the cheapest way to expand into a new area is to buy an existing carrier. you get equipment , people and accounts, the question is, would saia buy a union carrier? that is about all there is available in the area small enough for sais to buy.

There is no way Saia would buy a union carrier. It is hard enough merge two nonunion or union companies together...

That would be like FedEx trying hard to stay nonunion then turning around and buying a union carrier.

Talk about a camel going through the eye of a needle.

It would be easier for a nonunion company to go union than a union company to go nonunion...

We didn't even have enough dollies at cmb Friday. Night to cover are schedules....short on pups...short on tractors how could we possibly expand

that was the point i was making, . there maybe a couple of companies that only have a handfull of terminals that are non union that would be willing to sell but would it be worth the expense and time to convert rather than open one new terminal at a time and expand slowly

Opening terminals in the North east is tough. 1st there are not many available to buy, and the ones that are for sale are usually small and old. 2nd most towns in the North East are dead set against trucking companies. Land To build is a premium , especialy Philly and North. A 70 door terminal in the Ny/NJ market would probally run you 15-20 million if you are lucky. There are towns that have laws to prevent any trucking terminals from opening, as the old carriers died they made sure they would not come back.

They probally could find a non union carrier or a couple small one's to buy. I know you guys do buisness with Land Air, even though they have nothing in Md or western Pa this would get them through most of the area. Rist could be another one, they are in NJ,NY and Parts of Pa:coffee1:.

May be wrong about this, I don't see it happening soon but we are trying to expand our network by adding a few terminals in the places that need them(CGO).Since we have a few YRC looking at our page, I may go to theirs.better yet, I'll just check my teeth for plaque. YOU GUYS SPUN US OFF REMEMBER???
