XPO | Conway SUCKS!!!!

50K? that's not even worth going to work for. You have to stick around and get some time under your belt, so you can get a good run. And btw, that 10K you spoke of, is not a "cap", but an out of pocket maximum..lol shows more of your ignorance of benefits..keep up the good work..

I didn't know you were still a kid at 26.

And we wonder what's going wrong in the world. I'm all about being there for your children but at some point it's time to grow up and take care of yourself

Sent all the jobs to china. If you want your kids in the states. You are gonna have to help them out. Otherwise they are gonna have to follow the work and get the heck out this mess. What future does America really offer ?

This isn't funny. I don't find it funny at all.

I do :tongue: :crybaby::LMAO::732:

I haven't been on this board in a really long time but I'll throw my .02 out there being as objective as possible.

I've worked here for 11 years now and don't hold my job nearly as highly as I once did. There are two reasons for me that are kind of linked - it's like coaches in sports - the tactics and plans that worked 20 years ago don't work now. The absolute arrogance of management at this company is absurd. Some of you will remember the old saying, "we've got a stack of applications to replace you". Where is that stack now? There isn't one. The word on the street about this company is terrible and for good reason. There are the obvious things like the pension, vacation debacle, and terminals closing a few years back but I kinda get all of that to a degree. That said, those are reasons you don't have people pounding down the door. Another reason is simply the arrogance of management thinking that our entry level pay with 5 years to top rate is still competitive - it isn't. Even dock-worker pay - why would you work here in the heat and cold for 14 or so when you can go up the road a mile for 18 in a climate controlled environment? You wouldn't - they don't.

Second, still related to the first, the arrogance of management has decided over the last couple years that just about every human error is now termination. A very senior driver put it well when I talked to him yesterday. "Every day I make it out of the gate and still have my job I might as well kiss the ground". Well done management - that is fantastic for morale.

I guess there are 3. This still relates to the first two in regards to delusional arrogant management. They will simply never admit a mistake from the top and will blame it on the drivers and dock workers. I can already see the first quarter review video - claims are up. You suck. You need to do a better job. Yeah, that has nothing to do with the optimizer you rolled out that now takes a bill that should be handled once and is now handled three times before it hits the destination terminal. That has nothing to do with it. Then you'll tell us profits are down - we suck. But of course that has nothing to do with over head you've added by creating "lean" committees 25 an hour to paint spots on the dock for trash cans. Money well spent there. And at my barn those people aren't gonna lose their jobs over a human error because they don't drive anymore - this is what they do. They have no exposure to termination for a simple human error.

All that said, there is a reason I still work here. To compare this job to a common carrier otr job is irresponsible. I drove otr for a very reputable flatbed company and have run the math. I work less paid time here right now than I used to spend performing carrier directed work without pay and make about 200 more per week gross and I do the minimum. I make about 280 per night working about 9 total first punch to last punch on a meet and turn run. If I really get carried away I take something else when I get back and make 400 for about 12.5 to 13 total. No common otr carrier is even in that neighborhood and would not sleep in a truck at some nasty truck stop.

So this place does suck for the reasons I mentioned but at this point I stay because I can bid what I want and have the hours I want. To me that's very important. I'm always looking for ways to get out of driving altogether but haven't found the right avenue yet.

Fantastic post, driver. You hit the mail on the head. Arrogant and moronic management is the main reason morale is in the crapper.

They are getting what's coming to them, though. Can't find drivers at all, and a great majority of the ones they have are leaving in droves. I just sit back and laugh because the douches did it to themselves and still can't figure it out.

Where did you come from??? Have you ever worked for Con-Way?

Guess he's not going to answer the question so I will for him ... .

Hello my name is Lager (troll) and i wanted to do some conjob bashing so I decided to come to this site and look stupid with a one liner hit and run.
But the real reason for my inquisitive posture is I wanted to express my feeling and bask in ambience of suck , I truly derive or receive pleasure from something that sucks and my slanting position of skew is blurry so I am happy to endure the unpleasantness of the word suck on this thread !
I love Conway ...
xoxoxo Lager .

maybe lager is the guy who worked a half day and quit during orientation.

Excellent post Microbrew. God willing, I will never spend another night in a sleeper either.

Thank you everyone for the kind words. Rather than just complain I figured I should throw ideas I had for righting the ship. I do value my job so I think about this stuff.

First and foremost, this company needs to figure out who they are. As the regional carriers like CCX etc we were about transit times and customer service. Remember how esl lanes were pushed? That was a way to get customers attention - Detroit to New Jersey next day. We knew who we were. Now, OD is making money so we need to do what they're doing. Safe stack, handhelds, and now Saturday runs. Who are we? That needs to be figured out.

Update on the dock technology. Our system is antiquated even though we've only had it for 3 years I believe. We were still using paper in early 2010 if I remember correctly. I don't know this as fact but I believe 32 million was spent on the camera/eobr install instead of updating dock tech. I fail to believe the latter has saved or made us one dime while a tech update could have been huge.

Maybe this should have been first but just admit when a mistake has been made. Remember in 2009 when rates were dropped and we hauled everything for free digging a huge hole to climb out of? Just admit the mistake. Believe it or not that would go a long way with your work force - much further than blaming us for the problem. That debacle was tacitly mentioned in a video but just come out and say you screwed that one up - people would respect that.

Everything is all the way without common sense. Remember when safe stack came out? I was reprimanded for using a load rack on the back of the the trailer because it had safe stack. Never mind the fact I know what I'm doing and the rack came back further allowing me to do what I needed to do. This is currently the case with the optimizer. Even if that trailer comes in a 4 am we're gonna break that 2 day because the optimizer says so. Use your heads for the love of god - push the trailer.

Maybe the most important one is eliminating the fear factor every time you come to work to do your job. Why is everything termination? Shouldn't a driver with a million or two million miles get a bit of a break for one split second of inattention? Of course they should. One million miles is around 20,000 hours according to Con-way calculations and generally accepted industry calculations. Have any of you in Michigan sitting at your desk ever let your attention lapse for a spit second over 20,000 hours? Maybe a system where those that have no strikes are not automatically terminated would help. On the dock, maybe those that have no strikes should not be automatically terminated. I know everything is said to be investigated but let's be honest - unless equipment clearly failed you're done. What a miserable feeling that gives your rank and file when they report to work to support their family.

Cut overlapping departments and waste. To get "lean", an entire department was created at the corporate level and at the terminal level. I do know for 100% that positions were created and people were brought in for "lean" on top of those that were already with the company that have been promoted or reassigned to "lean". You do understand companies like Toyota and Microsoft that employ this have reputations for treating employees like gold. If it makes you feel good to have a "kaizon" or paint circles where the trash cans should be I guess have at it. We're a freight company. You should be concerned where the freight is and where the line-haul schedule is at.

To continue my last point, why are there drivers at this company that don't drive? The money that should have been spent on dock tech went into cameras and eobr devices that get "coached". While I'm on that subject, in the initial video we were told the cameras would not only allow correcting of unsafe behavior, but also recognize drivers that were already driving as they should. OK, I'm not a million miler yet because I spent a lot of time in the city and the yard but in over a year with the camera looking at me I haven't been coached. I thought there was recognition for that?

This company needs to figure out who they are again and cut the bs waste. When I started here common sense was used and local people were allowed to make local decisions. If we don't get back to that we're in trouble.

Sorry for the length.

I appreciate the fact that there are a good number of employees still at Con-way that care about their jobs and the customer. Those two things are the keys to a successful business, no matter what industry you are in. I would still be at Con-way if common sense practices were in place and people were allowed to do their jobs without micromanaging every single second of the day and the overbearing nature of supervisors. I can say now I even enjoyed what I did at Con-way, and I know that it isn't just me because now I'm at OD, I still enjoy what I do, but am allowed to do my job without being micromanaged and am actually appreciated for doing my job. It's funny, they (OD dispatch) thanked me one time even when I ran out of hours and had to be picked up for sticking with it and getting as close to my destination as possible before having to shut down. I've told many a supervisor at Con-way that this isn't brain surgery or rocket science, it's freight. If you treat it accordingly, you have happy employees and a successful business model.

Another home run Microbrew. Very good post. I too had been away from this forum for quite awhile because of a very serious family emergency and since I have found the time to come back, I wondered if this forum was just going to be complaint forum where everybody cries about the big bad company. I think your post is too the point and offers solutions to the problems we face as a company. Keep it up driver and have a safe trip.

Could you elaborate for me? Sorry just a question, not meant to anger you just curious why you as a grown man/woman why you would work for a company you despise.having a valid cdl gives you many options at gainful employment, ive heard of this one place with an o.r of like 85 that will hook you up, they really seem to have it together.id give them a try, ya aint chicken are ya?

no OT, wonder how they have an o/r of 85? grass might not be greener when you get there. thought of looking for something else, but it's a race to the bottom everywhere, my employer was able to get the concessions they wanted, now they have to live with it, they can't hire anyone, they have recruiters trying to get people from truck driving schools!
